Woman Refuses to Babysit Again After Discovering Her Sister Lied About an “Emergency” to Take a Romantic Trip

Family members often expect support during difficult times, but what happens when that support is obtained through deception?

This Redditor explains that they have consistently been their sister’s reliable source of childcare, often putting aside personal plans to help. After being told her employment was on the line without weekend childcare, they agreed to take the children despite significant inconvenience.

Only afterward did they discover the entire story had been fabricated so their sister could enjoy a romantic getaway with her boyfriend. While relatives argue that one lie shouldn’t end a valuable support system, the Redditor believes trust, once broken, cannot simply be restored with another request for help.

'AITA for refusing to babysit my sister’s kids again after finding out she lied about why she needed me?'

My sister has two kids, 4 and 7, and I’ve been helping her with babysitting pretty regularly for about a year.

Usually it’s just a few hours after school or the occasional Saturday when she has work.

I don’t mind helping when I’m actually available, and I’ve never asked her to pay me.

Two weeks ago, she called sounding really stressed and said she’d been scheduled for a mandatory weekend shift because several coworkers were out sick.

She asked if I could take the kids from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon.

I already had plans, but she kept saying she could get written up or even lose her job if she didn’t go in.

I felt bad, cancelled everything, and agreed to keep them.

The weekend ended up being a lot harder than I expected.

The younger one got sick during the night, the older one had a birthday party I had to drive him to, and my sister barely answered her phone.

She sent two short messages saying work was “insane” and that she couldn’t talk.

Then on Sunday, she came to pick them up looking suspiciously well-rested and handed me a souvenir mug from a town about three hours away.

When I asked why she had it, she first claimed a coworker had given it to her.

After I pushed a little, she admitted she had gone away with her boyfriend for the weekend.

Apparently, they had booked the trip months ago, but their original childcare fell through.

She knew I probably wouldn’t cancel my plans just so she could go on a romantic getaway, so she lied and said her job was at risk instead.

She admitted lying was wrong, but said she “desperately needed a break” and knew the kids would be safest with me.

I told her I wouldn’t be babysitting again for the foreseeable future, including when she actually has work, because I can’t trust what she tells me anymore.

She got angry and said I’m punishing the kids over one bad decision. Yesterday, she called because she genuinely has a work shift this Saturday, and I still said no.

Now our mom is involved and says I should separate my feelings about the lie from the fact that my sister needs support as a single parent.

I understand that she’s exhausted and deserves time away.

Had she asked me honestly, I might have agreed to help for one night, or at least helped her find another option.

Instead, she manipulated me into cancelling my own plans by making me believe her job was in danger.

It feels like she decided my time was hers to take, as long as she invented a serious enough reason.

AITA for refusing to babysit now, even when the reason might actually be legitimate?

Trust is one of the easiest things to damage and one of the hardest things to rebuild. Many people are willing to make sacrifices for family, especially when they believe they are helping someone through a difficult situation. But when that sacrifice is obtained through deception, the emotional impact often becomes much larger than the original request.

In this situation, the original poster was not upset simply because their sister took a vacation. They were hurt because they were manipulated into giving up their own plans under false circumstances.

The babysitting itself was difficult, involving a sick child, extra responsibilities, and limited communication. What changed everything was discovering that the urgency was manufactured. The poster likely feels less like a helpful family member and more like someone whose kindness was exploited.

A different perspective is that the sister’s decision may have come from exhaustion rather than malicious intent. Single parents can experience intense pressure, isolation, and a desperate need for rest.

She may have convinced herself that a weekend away was something she needed to survive, and because she trusted her sibling with the children, she underestimated how damaging the lie would feel.

However, understanding her stress does not erase the fact that she removed her sister’s ability to make an informed choice. A favor only feels generous when the person giving it has the freedom to say yes.

Family therapist Nedra Glover Tawwab explains that healthy boundaries are not punishments; they are ways people communicate what they can and cannot accept in relationships. She emphasizes that boundaries help create healthier connections because they establish expectations and protect trust.

Psychologist Harriet Lerner, known for her work on family relationships, has also discussed how resentment often develops when people repeatedly ignore their own limits to keep peace with others.

This explains why the poster’s reaction is about more than childcare. If they immediately continued babysitting as if nothing happened, the unspoken message might be that lying is an effective way to receive help. Taking a temporary step back gives the sister a chance to understand that support from family depends on honesty.

At the same time, completely ending all help forever may not solve the deeper family issue. The most productive outcome would likely come from a serious conversation where the sister acknowledges the harm caused and both sides agree on clearer expectations. The poster can care about the children while still protecting their own time and trust.

Helping family is an act of love, but love does not require accepting manipulation. A healthy relationship allows people to support each other while still respecting each other’s boundaries.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters said the sister caused the problem by lying and now has to face the consequences

shak1071 − NTA. Mommy dearest just volunteered. Classical FAFO!

ExcaliburVader − NW. You can't trust her. She was willing to leave her kids so she could be with the boyfriend. She put her plans as a priority over your...

Now you aren't available and that's her fault. Your mom can babysit if she feels strongly. I watch my grandkids and I'm happy to do it.

But the minute they start lying to me about why I'm done.

racingturtlesforfun − NTA. Tell mom that your sister abused her single-parent support system, and these are the consequences.

Let grandma be the free babysitter from now on if she cares so much.

I would be hopping mad if someone lied to and manipulated me that way. That’s crap.

MrTash999 − NW she lied and has just played the classic game of FA and she is now FO. If your mother feels so strong about it she can babysit.

These Redditors suggested the boyfriend or grandmother should babysit instead of pressuring OP

Sea-Ad9057 − Her boyfriend can babysit, her mother can babysit

Aiyokusama − YNW. SHE decided to have kids, not you. And if your mom thinks she needs support, mom can take the kids.

UrghOkWhatever − Why doesn’t your mom babysit her kids?

TheNinjaPixie − How is saying no punishing the children? And a single parent who has a bf can ask him or opinionated mother for help.

These users rejected the claim that saying no harms the children and said the mother must arrange proper childcare

Miserable-Run-1882 − nah you're not wrong, she played you and now she's mad you won't let her keep the controller

if she'd just asked straight up you probably would've worked something out,

but she went full soap opera with the fake emergency and then slipped up with the mug like a cartoon villain your mom needs to stay out of it too,

"support as a single parent" doesn't mean being a doormat while your sister treats your time like it's hers to steal

neverthelessidissent − She can work around the custody arrangement, like most single parents do. NTA.

If someone lies to persuade you to help them once, would you trust the next emergency they describe? And should family members be expected to keep helping after discovering they’ve been manipulated? Share your thoughts below!
