Woman Returned From Abroad Expecting A Ride, But Her Friends Treated Her Pickup Like An Afterthought

Friendships often rely on small acts of trust and consideration. When someone helps you out, especially in a meaningful way, it is natural to hope they will return that kindness when you need something from them.

The original poster left the country for a month and generously allowed friends to use her car while she was away. She did not ask for payment or any major favor in return, except that they pick her up from the airport when she came home. The plan was agreed upon ahead of time, and she expected them to arrive around her scheduled landing time.

However, after her flight arrived early, she noticed they were still at home and had not started driving yet. Although they eventually came to pick her up, the delay made her question whether they respected the favor she had done for them. Read on to see why this small delay caused such frustration.

A person returns from a month-long trip expecting one favor, but friends’ delay after using their car leaves them feeling unappreciated

'AITA for being pissed that my friends were late picking me up after using my car for a month?'

I recently left the country for about a month. While I was gone, I let some friends use my car the entire time.

I didn’t ask them for money or anything in return. The only thing I asked was that they pick me up from the airport when I returned.

I told them in advance that my flight was scheduled to land at 4:55 PM and they agreed with no hesitation.

Their apartment is around 30 minutes from the airport.

My flight landed a little early, around 4:45. When I checked their location, I saw they were still at their apartment, so I called them.

They didn’t answer but messaged me saying “you haven’t stepped of the plane yet right”, “We’re about to leave.”

They didn’t actually leave until around 5:02. Then, at 5:08, I saw that they were at a gas station only about three minutes away from their apartment.

I’m hoping they stopped to fill up my car, because otherwise I’ll be even more annoyed.

I understand that I landed ten minutes earlier than scheduled, and I didn’t expect them to be waiting directly outside the terminal the exact second I landed.

But since they live 30 minutes away, I assumed they would leave around 4:30 so they would arrive close to my scheduled landing time.

Instead, they didn’t even begin driving until after I had already landed.. I could have taken an Uber home and arrived before they even reached the airport.

Part of me feels like I’m overreacting because they are still coming to get me,

But another part of me feels like, after using my car freely for a full month, showing up on time for the one favor I asked was the bare minimum.

Few things feel more frustrating than realizing a favor you gave freely was treated casually in return. Most people do not expect perfection from their friends, but they do hope that their generosity will be met with basic consideration.

When someone agrees to help with an important moment and then seems unprepared, the disappointment often comes from feeling unappreciated rather than from the delay itself.

In this situation, the OP was not simply upset about waiting a few extra minutes at the airport. The bigger issue was the imbalance between what was given and what was expected in return. OP trusted friends enough to let them use a car for an entire month without asking for payment or compensation.

In exchange, the only favor requested was a specific pickup time after a long trip. Seeing them still at home after the flight landed made OP feel like the one responsibility they had was not treated as a priority. The frustration was amplified because transportation after traveling can feel like a vulnerable moment when someone is tired, carrying luggage, and ready to get home.

A different perspective is that the friends may not have understood the importance of timing from OP’s point of view. Some people treat scheduled arrival times casually, especially when they assume a small delay will not matter. They may have thought, “We are still picking them up, so everything is fine.”

However, that overlooks the context: they were not just helping a random acquaintance. They were using OP’s vehicle for weeks and had agreed to handle a specific responsibility. The favor was not complicated, but reliability was the main thing being offered.

Psychologist Guy Winch has written about how feelings of resentment often develop when people perceive an imbalance between what they give and what they receive in relationships. He explains that resentment frequently comes from unmet expectations and the belief that another person failed to recognize the effort or sacrifice involved.

This perspective explains why OP’s reaction feels stronger than a normal complaint about lateness. The emotional calculation was not simply “they were 20 minutes late.”

It was “I trusted you with something valuable, asked for one thing in return, and you did not seem prepared.” Even if the friends had a reasonable explanation, acknowledging the inconvenience and showing appreciation would likely have changed how the situation felt.

At the same time, this conflict may be less about the missed timing and more about future expectations.

When friends borrow something significant, especially a personal possession like a car, both sides need to understand what responsibilities come with that arrangement. Clear communication prevents one person from assuming a favor is casual while the other views it as a serious commitment.

OP is not unreasonable for feeling disappointed. The important question is whether this was a one-time mistake or part of a larger pattern of taking OP’s generosity for granted. Good friendships survive occasional mistakes, but they require both people to notice when one person has been giving more than they receive.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters believed the friends were ungrateful and failed to respect the favor of borrowing a car

Mama-Rides_AZ73 − NTA- you were low priority for them. Grateful friends would have been on time with a spotless car and a full tank.

Sufficient_Song3387 − Don't ever let your friends use you car or anything else you owe again. They do not respect or appreciate you.

GooseyGoose87 − NTA. I borrowed a friends car for about a month, as she was on restriction and not allowed to leave (military).

When I received the car, one of the side mirrors was broken off. While I had the car, the motor for the driver side window died.

I went and got the motor repaired and the mirror replaced, without being asked.

I also picked up food for her from off base at times. When someone loans you a car, you show appreciation, not disrespect.

These Redditors argued that airport delays, luggage, and customs could explain the late pickup

Blind_rat_rivers − I think we need context about the airport.

How big is it, does it take long to get off the plane, walk through passport control, get your bags etc etc.

30 mins is normally about the time it takes me to get off plane to exit at a minimum in a big airport with hold luggage

brownbibabe − It's fair to assume that it would take 30 minutes to deplane, go through customs, and gather your luggage when you're on an international flight.

Perhaps in a perfect world they would've left earlier or filled up the car sooner, but unless you specified a time to pick you up this is not inherently disrespectful.

Remember that you're getting off a long flight and are probably tired, so your emotions are amplified. But yes, you're overreacting.

Give them a chance to show their gratitude instead of holding them to this unspoken standard.

L2N2 − I pick up my kids from the airport all the time. Did you not have to go through customs or passport control?

Did you not have luggage? Getting off a plane after landing can take easily twenty minutes depending on where you're sitting.

I don't ever get there at the time they are landing.

They text me at where they are waiting and are usually at that spot for a few minutes ahead of me otherwise I'm circling because parking is expensive and a...

Usually they are ready to be picked up 30-40 minutes after landing.

Maybe you were at a tiny airport and it's different but it's funny you don't say exactly how late they were.

These users wanted more details about the timing, airport process, and whether the tank was refilled

Illustrious-Horse276 − INFO - was the gas tank full?

robotcrackle − Did they actually fill up the tank?

HashMapsData2Value − INFO: was it a domestic flight? (Schengen internal counts as domestic. )

Im leaning towards yes it was bad of them. Sure if you're picking up someone as a favor for free

and you make them sit 10-20 mins at the airport doom scrolling their phones it's no big deal.

But given that it was your car THEY could've been the ones showing up early and having to wait a little. They'd keep themselves company too.

thatguysuba − Info: what time did they actually get there, how long were you actually waiting?

Was the woman upset over a reasonable boundary, or did exhaustion after a long flight make the delay feel worse? Should borrowing someone’s car automatically mean going above and beyond afterward? Share your thoughts below!
