Woman Reveals Her “Dating Strategy” At Wedding, And Guests Can’t Stop Laughing

Sometimes romance begins with a grand gesture, a perfect coincidence, or a little bit of harmless strategy. Not every love story starts with two people instantly realizing they are meant to be together. Sometimes, one person has to put in a little extra effort to get noticed.

OP says she fell for her future husband long before he ever saw her that way. When they first met, she was simply his younger sister’s friend, while he was the older guy who seemed completely out of reach. Years later, they crossed paths again, and OP finally had a chance to make a different impression.

Instead of waiting around and hoping he would notice her, she decided to create the perfect opportunity. Looking back, she jokes that she basically “scammed” him into liking her, but the plan worked better than she could have imagined. Read on to see the hilarious way this love story started.

A woman reveals the playful “scheme” she used to impress her crush, turning a teenage obsession into a lasting love story

'I scammed my husband into liking me… and I admitted it on our wedding day'

Admitted in my vows, actually, in front of all of our guests.. Just kidding!

For me, it was love at first sight for my (now) husband. Not so much for him. I was his little sisters friend, with braces, and constant teen girl giggling.

He was the older, much much hotter, couldn’t-care-less older brother down the hall. I obviously had no shot.

Later, we met again through mutual friends, now both older, no headgear.

I was just as in love, he was still just as cute, and this time I actually had a chance - I wasn’t going to blow it.

I invited him to hang at my place after a friends birthday party and….

I had staged the place. I had casually left out a T-shirt of his favorite football team. You know, just tossed on the back of a chair. Oops!

How did that get there? I left a CD of his favorite band on my nightstand, because obviously, that’s what any casual fan does.

I love them too, duh! I had his favorite drink waiting in the fridge. Suuuuper casual.

Was I a complete weirdo for doing this? Yes. Did it work perfectly? Also yes. It also made for a perfect wedding story.

His sister (a bridesmaid) was only a little annoyed to find out I was using our hangouts as study sessions on her older brother.

(Just kidding she thought it was hilarious & knew all her friends thought he was cute obviously).

ETA: to the people who think this is weird

1. I already owned the shirt (local school, my dad’s shirt) & CD because I genuinely liked them, I just made sure they were visible. Also we were so young...

2. I don’t care! I’m into my husband, sue me. The title is obvs a joke

Sometimes love stories are built on grand gestures, but sometimes they begin with something much smaller: noticing the tiny details that make another person feel seen.

In this story, the OP jokingly describes herself as having “scammed” her husband into liking her, but what she actually did was create an opportunity for connection by showing interest in the things he already loved.

The emotional heart of the story is not the staged football shirt or the carefully placed CD. It is the confidence and effort behind them. The OP had admired him for years, knew she finally had a chance to make an impression, and decided not to leave their first real opportunity entirely to chance.

She paid attention to his preferences and created a comfortable environment where conversation could naturally happen. While the setup was playful, the motivation was simple: she wanted someone she liked to notice that they had things in common.

There is also another perspective worth considering. Some people might view this as manipulative because she intentionally arranged details to influence his impression of her. However, attraction almost always involves some form of presentation.

People choose outfits, highlight shared interests, clean their homes before dates, and put forward the version of themselves they hope others will appreciate. The difference is whether someone is pretending to be a completely different person or simply making visible parts of themselves that already exist.

Psychologists often discuss this through the concept of self-presentation. Psychologist Mark Leary, who has researched impression management, explains that people naturally try to influence how others perceive them, especially in social and romantic situations. Self-presentation is not automatically dishonest; it is part of how humans build relationships and communicate identity.

Research on attraction also shows that perceived similarity and shared interests can influence how people connect with one another, because similarities often create feelings of familiarity and comfort.

That context makes the OP’s “scam” much less dramatic. She was not secretly changing her personality or pretending to love things she hated. She was essentially saying, “Hey, these parts of me might interest you too.” The relationship still had to develop through actual conversations, compatibility, and time.

The sweetest part of the story is that years later, she could tell the truth publicly and turn what might have been an embarrassing confession into a shared joke. A relationship cannot survive on clever first impressions alone. The initial spark only matters if the people underneath it are genuine.

Sometimes people call it luck when someone notices them. Sometimes it is simply because someone cared enough to make sure they were noticed.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters viewed the behavior as creepy, unusual, or built on questionable intentions

heathbarcrunchh − “I’m not a creepy stalker” mmm no you are

kleinerlinalaunebaer − I find it a bit bizarre. Not awful by any means but certainly not cute either.

edWORD27 − If a man had done the same thing, he’d be called manipulative and obsessive.

Then to choose to admit to it during the wedding vows?

Almost sounds like the villain reveal of how he pulled off the ultimate crime without being caught. !

Think-Confidence-424 − The guy fell for the stalker 😂

forethebirds − Everyone knows the best relationships are founded on lies. /s

These users found the story sweet and praised OP for helping the relationship happen

majestic7 − Honestly, 100% adorable.  How did he react?

SonoranRoadRunner − Men sometimes need a push to get over the finish line, well done.

tdkelly − This is fantastic. Well done, OP.

These Redditors joked about the “stalker” angle while warning that similar relationships do not always last

BenWa-SF − I knew a real story like this and they ended up divorced with two kids. Hope yours works out better.

PreparationOk8604 − How is that a scam? It's just knowing the person you're dating well.

A woman’s playful wedding confession turned an old crush story into a debate about romance, effort, and authenticity. Whether readers saw it as adorable or slightly strange, one thing was clear: she knew exactly what she wanted.

Do you think creating the perfect first impression is romantic, or does it feel too calculated? Have you ever tried to impress someone you liked? Share your thoughts below.
