Woman Secures Her Vacation Dates After Coworker Tries to Copy the Time Off She Mentioned

Sometimes, workplace conflicts are not caused by one big mistake, but by small decisions that leave someone feeling overlooked or taken advantage of.

When schedules, responsibilities, and fairness are involved, even a simple vacation request can turn into a frustrating situation.

The original poster (OP) works in a small specialized department where only a few employees are trained to handle the workload.

During the holiday season, several coworkers were allowed to take extended vacations at the same time, leaving OP and one other colleague struggling to keep everything running.

Before going on her own break, a coworker had been informed about OP’s plans to take time off in late February and early March.

Weeks later, that same coworker suddenly mentioned wanting those exact dates for herself.

Worried the situation would repeat, OP quickly secured approval from their manager and officially booked the time off.

Now OP is wondering if she was unfair for acting first. Read on to see what people thought.

Worker secures her long-planned vacation dates after a coworker appears to claim the same time off

not the actual photo

'AITB for speed-booking my vacation the second my coworker tried to steal the exact dates I’d already told her about?'

I (28F) work in a tiny, highly specialized retail department (only 6 people). This Christmas, four

of them somehow got approved for 2–4 weeks off at the same time, leaving just me and

Betty (50s) to cover everything. No one else in the store is trained to help. It’s been an

absolute disaster.

Jacinta (one of the ones on holiday) keeps texting me for department updates from her

vacation. Two weeks ago I mentioned in passing that I’m planning to take the last week of

Feb plus the first week of Mar off. She never replied to that specific message.

Today, still on her Christmas break, she texts again for an update and casually drops that

she’s “thinking of taking late Feb/early Mar off too.” Word-for-word the dates I told her.

I panicked, contacted our manager immediately, got verbal approval, and submitted the

official request that same hour. It’s now locked in while Jacinta is still away.. She’s going to be

furious when she sees I “took” the dates she pretended she didn’t know about.. AITB for

beating her to it?

Sometimes the hardest part of being a reliable person is realizing that others may start depending on your flexibility without considering your needs.

Many people know the frustration of being the one who stays behind, covers the gaps, and keeps everything running while others get to step away.

When that same person finally asks for time off, it can feel deeply unfair when someone else appears ready to take priority.

In this situation, the OP was not simply competing over vacation dates.

She was reacting to months of pressure and the feeling that her commitment to the department had been taken for granted.

With most of her small team away during one of the busiest periods, she and Betty were left carrying the responsibility of keeping a specialized department functioning.

When Jacinta later mentioned taking the exact dates the OP had already shared, it likely felt less like a coincidence and more like another example of someone overlooking the effort she had already given.

A different perspective is that Jacinta may not have intentionally tried to take the dates from her coworker.

She may have forgotten the message, missed it among other conversations, or simply not realized how much the OP had been affected by everyone’s extended absences.

However, workplace fairness is not only about intent; it is also about awareness.

When a team has limited staffing, people need to recognize that everyone deserves the chance to plan personal time, not only those who request leave first or have louder voices.

This insight helps explain why the OP’s decision to secure her leave was reasonable.

She did not secretly manipulate the system or prevent Jacinta from taking time off; she followed the proper process by getting approval from her manager and submitting the request.

After already sacrificing during a difficult period, protecting her own scheduled break was a necessary act of self-respect.

At the same time, the situation highlights a broader workplace issue.

The real problem is not two employees wanting the same vacation period.

It is a department structure that allows several people to be away at once while leaving only two employees responsible for everything.

A healthy workplace should not depend on a few reliable people constantly absorbing the consequences of poor coverage planning.

The OP’s choice was not about “winning” against Jacinta. It was about recognizing that her time and energy matter too.

Being dependable does not mean being endlessly available. Employees who consistently support their teams also deserve support when they need it.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters supported OP, saying she earned her vacation time and was not wrong for taking the available dates

RuthlessKittyKat − She's on vacation now. She'll live. NTB

Subject-Driver8127 − NTB! !! You’ve had to take up the slack while she & the other 3 are

away- it’s only fair that YOU get a chance to take your time off! Just ignore any garbage she

may give you… it’s sad how selfish some people can be. I’m glad you jumped quick to get

your spot- enjoy your vacation!

Amazing-Wave4704 − You told her you were taking those dates off - and now you officially

are. NTB in any way, shape or form.

meski_oz − NTB, it's up to management if they approve her leave.

Gingi1018 − Nope first come first serve and she got served 🤣

Outrageous-Collar-09 − Wooooow. NTB.

Enjoy your vacation, OP!

These users advised OP to stop sharing personal plans with coworkers and keep vacation details private until finalized

8Mariposa8 − NTB From now on keep your business to yourself. Just because you work in a

small department doesn’t mean you have to share everything about yourself.

karlmonke − Why the eff do you care if Jacinta is going to be mad? Why did you feel the

need to even discuss with a co-worker your impending holiday plans? Dude. Seriously. It’s

work. She’s not family. You gotta keep them separated.

Emotional_Bonus_934 − NTB but never tell anyone your vacation dates until they're locked in.

Not anyone.   You should tell them dates you're not planning.

nooutlaw4me − NTB. And now you know what she is capable of. Stop telling her your plans.

These commenters suggested OP avoid conflict by saying the dates were already booked or approved when mentioned

Iforgotmypassword126 − Just say you already had them booked when you mentioned them to her.

mango1588 − Is she gets upset, you just play dumb. "Jacinta, what are you mad about? I

TOLD you I was taking those dates. Here's the text. Am I not entitled to time off too? "

What started as a simple vacation request turned into a workplace conflict over fairness and communication.

The OP felt forced to act after seeing a coworker potentially claim the same dates they had already mentioned, especially after being left to handle a difficult workload during everyone else’s time off.

Was securing the approval first a smart move, or did the OP unfairly jump ahead of a colleague? Should coworkers respect informal plans, or only rely on official requests? Share your thoughts below!
