Woman Struggles to Feel Sorry for Friends Who Want a Luxury Upgrade Without Making Any Sacrifices

Sometimes frustration is not about what someone does, but about what they expect others to feel sorry for.

This Redditor says she has been struggling to sympathize with her friends Sarah and Todd, who are trying to sell their current home to upgrade to a much more expensive property. While she initially supported their plans, she became increasingly irritated after hearing them complain about the possibility of the deal falling through.

In her view, they are already in a fortunate financial position, yet they are unwilling to compromise, accept help, or adjust their expectations. Now she is questioning whether her anger is unfair or whether their situation genuinely lacks perspective.

'My friends are being greedy without knowing it while trying to sell their house and its making me irrationally angry'

I have these friends, Sarah and Todd, they live in a subdivision in our city and bought just under 3 years ago.

They recently looked at a home in a better area on a much larger block and put in an offer (which was accepted) for 1.3m,

they've had an inspection and reckon they'd need to do 200k worth of renovations so they need to sell their house at a high price.

At first I was happy for them, the area is one of the nicest in our city, even if the house is tired and close to a main road.

Thing is, they're basically unwilling to sacrifice anything.

They have no mortgage and cant get one because Sarah hasnt worked in 5 years and doesnt plan to until their youngest child (nearly 3) is in school.

So whilst they have some money in the bank and a fully paid off property, they still cant get over the line for 1.5m unless they sell for an exorbitant...

So they've gotten an agent that says its possible and they're trying just that.

Their house is fine and tidy but nothing special and they're asking for offers around 1.3m

(average for the area is 990k with some pretty major outliers in the upper range). Completely unrealistic.

To give an example, a house that is a similar footprint on a similar sized block of land just sold last month in that area for 1.1m.

The house is newer, has ducted air-conditioning, a shed, a pool and solar panels. Sarah and Todds place has none of those things.

Not only is their naivety pissing me off a bit but they're saying they're "really down" about the fact that

they've had no offers and the deal might fall through on the new place... like... in this economy...

people are struggling and you're sitting there being sad that you cant have everything you want without some level of compromise??

Sad that you couldnt rip someone off?! They bought the place for 570k 3 years ago ffs!

Youre already set to near-double your money, what more can you want?!

They go on 2 overseas holidays a year on one income because of well off family and even whinge about that half the time!

Oh the kids are upset they might not move to the new house? Theyre both under 5 years old! Why are they involved at all?!

On that note; Todds family have even offered to loan them several hundred thousand dollars that

they wouldnt have to pay back until Sarah starts working again but they dont want to take that. Am I meant to feel bad for them?

This is vented to me... who came off my maternity leave as soon as it ran out for both of my children, has a mortgage, never goes on holidays...

and I still consider my position to be very lucky! I just cant feign the devastation that they probably want from me.

It can be surprisingly difficult to watch people struggle with problems that seem self-created, especially when their circumstances look far more comfortable than our own. Many frustrations between friends are not caused by jealousy or a lack of compassion.

They often come from seeing someone complain about losing an opportunity that already represents a level of privilege many people would consider a dream.

In this situation, the frustration is not really about a house sale. It is about a difference in perspective. The friend appears to view the situation through the lens of disappointment: they found a home they love, made plans, and now feel anxious that the numbers may not work.

Meanwhile, the observer sees a couple who already owns a fully paid-off property, has financial support available, travels regularly, and is attempting to move into a more expensive lifestyle without accepting the compromises usually required.

Those two viewpoints naturally create very different emotional reactions. What feels like a stressful setback to one person can look like an unnecessary luxury problem to another.

A different perspective is that people often experience financial stress relative to their own expectations rather than their objective situation. Someone accustomed to a certain lifestyle can feel genuine anxiety when that lifestyle becomes uncertain, even if others believe they are still financially secure.

Their disappointment does not necessarily mean they are unaware of other people’s struggles; it may simply mean they are focused on the future they imagined. However, there is also a valid concern when someone’s expectations rely on circumstances being unusually favorable.

A dream home, renovation budget, and preferred timeline often require trade-offs, and avoiding every sacrifice can create unrealistic pressure.

Financial psychologist Brad Klontz has researched how people’s emotional beliefs about money influence financial decisions, explaining that individuals often develop personal “money scripts” based on their experiences and expectations. These beliefs can shape what they consider normal, necessary, or stressful.

Similarly, financial expert Ramit Sethi has frequently discussed the importance of aligning spending decisions with actual priorities and understanding that every financial choice involves trade-offs.

These perspectives help explain why the observer feels such strong irritation. The issue is not simply that the friends want a nicer home.

It is the emotional disconnect of hearing complaints from people who appear unwilling to consider reasonable alternatives, such as delaying the purchase, accepting a lower sale price, borrowing available support, or adjusting renovation expectations.

At the same time, resentment can become damaging when we measure someone else’s struggles only against our own sacrifices. Different people have different circumstances, and their choices do not have to mirror ours.

The healthier response may be recognizing that their disappointment is theirs to manage, while deciding how much emotional energy to invest in conversations that repeatedly create frustration.

Sometimes friendship requires empathy, but it also requires honesty with ourselves. We can understand that someone is stressed without taking responsibility for feeling the same level of distress. Not every problem someone shares needs to become our problem to carry.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters advised OP to stop carrying friends’ problems and focus on their own life

FinanciallySecure9 − You are way too invested in this. This is what Mel Robbins means when she says “Let Them”.

They vented to you without your permission, thereby putting their problem on your shoulders. You don’t have to take it on.

If they start venting again about it, tell them you’re busy. Just sit and watch their shitshow.

You have the right knowledge of the situation-they won’t be able to sell for what they want. It doesn’t need repeated discussion. It can be fun to watch.

Single_Afternoon_386 − You’re a lot more invested then you need to Be. They can list the home. If someone finds value at that price they’ll pay.

If they don’t nobody puts an offer. It’s the same when people paid the extra mark ups on cars, were dealers greedy? Yes. Did people want it? Yes.

Don’t spend time on this and live your life and focus on what’s around you.

Successful-Trash-752 − Focus on yourself

These Redditors believed the housing situation would naturally resolve because the expectations were unrealistic

neck_iso − Sounds like a problem that will resolve itself. Many, _many_ people have gone through similar unrealistic real estate stories.

We are sort of in a high-price low-volume environment and that can create unrealistic expectations.

Pushing your housing obligations to the limit when you have small kids is an invitation to real life problems so they will probably end up better off.

Prudence_rigby − I thinl you need to take a breather from your friends. You're WAY too emotionally invested in this.

And its living rent free in your mind. I understand they are your friends. But let them f__k themselves over while you enjoy your family.

Your friends have rich people problems they created and are ungrateful for what they have.

They can't even get a mortgage for the house they want.

These users criticized the friends’ pricing decisions and viewed their expectations as unreasonable

OneExhaustedFather_ − I’m sorry 1.3m and doesn’t have central AC? I need what they’re smoking.

beefstue − So many commenters are complaining that you're complaining in a trueoffmychest subreddit. I'll go ahead and say it.

I ALSO think it's naive and a little s__tty to try and sell a house for way more than it's worth in a housing crisis, too. It's giving boomer behavior,...

People complain that nobody can afford houses nowadays and this is a really good example as to why.

I bet they'd charge crazy high rent and not cover any utilities, either.

Alright, rant over. Preparing for other people to comment and ask why I care so much or tell me to water my own garden

neroli89 − Honestly I'd feel the same way. Their stupidity, entitlement and greediness are very frustrating.

These commenters emphasized that privileged complaints can feel insensitive when shared with people facing harder situations

elizzup − We’re planning a pretty big reno and it’s super expensive, time consuming, and stressful.

Guess what I will NOT be venting about to friends who are job searching or still renting in their late 30s.

I am very fortunate to own my home, and have a moderately successful business.

We are not rich by any means; but we know we are doing better than many and try to live frugally.

I do not share these kinds of experiences with many of my friends because it is so tone deaf!

99dalmatianpups − Oh my god, half of these comments can’t f__king read.

OP IS NOT JEALOUS! OP IS NOT SEEKING OUT THIS INFORMATION! OP IS BEING TOLD THIS INFORMATION AND BEING EXPECTED TO PROVIDE SYMPATHY IN RESPONSE!

OP, I’m sorry people are being so stupid. I’d be ticked off if someone was whining to me about such self-created issues as well.

Like, the answer to their problem is right in front of them, but their entitlement and inability to compromise makes

them incapable of seeing it as an option. It’s always difficult to hear people complain about things you’d be eternally grateful for.

Do you think the poster was being unfairly judgmental, or is it reasonable to feel frustrated when friends complain about problems caused by their own choices? How should people handle financial conversations when friends live very different realities? Share your thoughts below!
