Woman Sues Cousin After He Threw Her In The Pool And Destroyed $6K Hearing Aids

Most families have that one relative who still acts like they’re the class clown, even as an adult. Usually it’s harmless. But when the “prankster” refuses to respect boundaries and ends up destroying something essential, patience runs out fast. Especially when the person responsible shrugs it off like it’s no big deal.

That’s the storm this woman walked into when her cousin tossed her into a pool despite her serious protests. Her hearing aids were destroyed, the cousin refused to pay, and the family insisted she should just let it go because she earns more money.

Keep reading to see how this disagreement turned into a courtroom battle and why the entire family is furious at the outcome.

A cousin prank dumps a woman in the pool and destroys her $6k hearing aids

'AITAH for suing my cousin for 6K to pay for my hearing aides after he threw me in the pool?'

My family is all on my cousins side for this issue, and I wanted some outside judgement.

My cousin (25m) has always been the golden child of our generation.

He’s funny, good looking, and out going, not to mention a boy amongst girls. He’s always loved to mess around and play pranks.

For the record, I really dislike this cousin. I think he’s irresponsible, childish, and annoying.

I have had hearing problems for years. I recently got a $6,000 pair of hearing aides.

Recently at my grandmothers birthday party we were all eating and drinking on the back porch. My grandmother has a pool.

My cousin decided he was going to throw me in the pool because it would be funny to ruin my hair that I just got done that day.

I repeatedly told him to stop and put me down, in a very serious and not playful at all tone.

He threw me in the pool, and my hearing aides were ruined.

Afterwords when I told him what happened he basically said whoops, didn’t know you had hearing aides now.

When I told him the cost of them and that he would have to replace them he freaked out, and said no way.

My family didn’t want me to make him pay for them because I significantly out earn him and also everyone else in the family.

He was in college at the time, barely making ends meet in a call center job.

His girlfriend and him have a baby and they live in a one bedroom apartment.

He refused to pay, so I took him to court. I won. He refused to make the payments after that,

so I took him back to court and his wages are now being garnished for the maximum amount, which is 20% of his total wages.

It pushed him over the edge of what he could afford, so he’s had to work extra and drop out of college to be able to pay their rent.

My family is absolutely fuming at me.

I think he made one bad choice after the other, and he has never given a sincere apology during this whole ordeal.

Had he gave a real apology after the incident and asked if he could wait till he finished school to pay me back I would’ve been fine with it.

But the entitled little p__ck is digging his feet in at every move.

AITAH? The only reason I could see me maybe being the a__hole is because it’s affecting his child and girlfriend.

When someone’s boundaries are crossed, especially in a public and humiliating way, it’s easy to understand the emotional toll it takes. In this situation, the woman was violated not just by her cousin’s prank, but by the disregard for her specific needs. Throwing her into the pool was not just a joke; it was a breach of trust and safety.

For someone who has hearing loss, a prank that ruins expensive hearing aids is more than inconvenient; it’s a direct attack on her ability to function and communicate. That immediate feeling of helplessness and violation is something many people can relate to, especially when it’s not just physical harm, but an assault on one’s dignity.

From a psychological perspective, the cousin’s refusal to acknowledge the harm he caused or apologize highlights a common issue known as emotional invalidation.

Emotional invalidation occurs when someone’s feelings or experiences are dismissed or ignored. In this case, the cousin downplayed the consequences of his actions, claiming he didn’t know about her hearing aids, a statement that feels dismissive at best.

Research shows that when an individual’s emotional experience is invalidated, it can lead to feelings of anger, resentment, and increased emotional distress.

Dr. John Amodeo, a psychologist specializing in relationships and emotional health, explains that “when we feel disrespected or dismissed, it can trigger a range of responses, from frustration to deep emotional hurt, especially when our boundaries are violated.”

Her family’s response, which leaned toward protecting the cousin, even at her expense, also taps into a social dynamic where some people are shielded from consequences due to charm, status, or family position.

This phenomenon, where family members dismiss a victim’s legitimate grievances to preserve the family image or maintain peace, often leaves the victim feeling isolated and unheard.

The decision to take legal action, though harsh, was a way for the woman to regain control over her life and assert her boundaries. Dr. Elizabeth Hopper, a therapist specializing in conflict resolution, points out that people often resort to legal action when their efforts to seek a fair resolution are continually dismissed.

“In the absence of accountability, legal measures can become the only viable solution to restore fairness,” she explains.

The outcome of this situation, while painful for the cousin and his family, underscores an important lesson: accountability is vital. While the financial toll on his family is regrettable, it’s crucial that everyone understands the real cost of violating another person’s boundaries.

The woman’s actions were not driven by a desire for vengeance but by the need to assert her right to safety, respect, and fairness.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

This group insisted he caused the damage and must face full accountability

Scary-Welder8404 − NTA A man fixes what he breaks. It's basic eggshell skull theory m__herfucker, cope.

ElonsRocket22 − NTA. Where he fucked up was not negotiating a payment plan with you that he could afford after he did it.

A 20% garnish is a harsh way to learn his lesson, but he earned that lesson.

Pschulman − NTA. He played a stupid game and won a stupid prize.

DuePromotion287 − NTA Your cousin is responsible for his actions and the repercussions for his actions.

He is 25, this shouldn’t even be a question.

shammy_dammy − NTA. Actions meet consequences. Now block him and any one else who is 'absolutely fuming' at you.

Life_Carrot3058 − Your family is why your cousin is the way he is. Unapologetic. NTA.

These commenters blamed the family for enabling him and refusing responsibility

millymollymel − So if he’d broken a wheel chair that someone needed to get around, he and the family would think it’s ok not to replace it?

Because it’s hearing aids, equipment that you need to be able to hear and function in your day to day life they

think it’s ok for him to just say whoops and get away with it.

NTA But your family is the worst. I can’t believe they would enable him like that.

If they all think it’s so hard on him, why are they not all chipping in to pay off his debt? I’m sorry you have a family of selfish a-holes!

Trailsya − FAFO NTA for you. Hopefully that annoying cousin learns from this. I'd block and ignore any family that is pressuring you.

Find nice friends to hang out with instead. You actually did him and his family a favor.

He hopefully learned form this so he doesn't start destroying much more expensive stuff of people

who don't give a sh*t about his golden status in your crappy family.

JanetInSpain − NTA continue with the lawsuit. "Just a joke" is the rallying cry of every bully on the planet.

Your cousin didn't pull a "joke" on you. He bullied you. He FAFO and is now literally paying the price.

If the rest of your family thinks you are wrong, why aren't they are chipping in to replace your hearing aids?

His problems are of his own creation, not yours. Do not feel guilty. You are doing the right thing.

At least for once in his life he'll actually be held accountable for his poor choices.

These Redditors said struggling financially doesn’t excuse destroying necessities

Short-Elodia2292 − My family didn’t want me to make him pay for them because I significantly out earn him and also everyone else in the family.

He was in college at the time, barely making ends meet in a call center job.

His girlfriend and him have a baby and they live in a one bedroom apartment. NTA.

Imagine backing and stumping for this kind of flop of a human being as the "golden child".

Man your family sure is stupid huh? He refused to pay, so I took him to court. I won.

He refused to make the payments after, so I took him back to court

and his wages are now being garnished for the maximum amount, which is 20% of his total wages.

It pushed him over the edge of what he could afford, so he’s had to work extra and drop out of college to be able to pay their rent

Good for you for taking the right steps to teach your garbage cousin that actions have consequences.

Him and your fam will never change but make sure when they come begging for handouts in the future

that they can always ask the perfect golden child cousin for assistance.

I_wanna_be_anemone − If family are so concerned they can all pitch in contributions toward paying off the man-child’s debt that he owes you. NTA

Mammoth_Rope_8318 − NTA. You're not affecting his girlfriend and baby. His actions are.

This group supported using the courts because that’s exactly what they’re for

Sorry-Analysis8628 − NTA. Your cousin's s__tty behavior is affecting his child and girlfriend.

You did nothing wrong by utilizing the court system to be made whole. That's what it's there for.

jcrazy78 − NTA. People that do stupid s__t like that need to be held responsible.

Should financial inequality excuse harmful behavior? Or should accountability be the one rule that applies equally to everyone?

What do you think, was her response fair, or would you have handled it differently? Drop your thoughts below!
