Some betrayals hurt because they reveal a completely different version of someone you thought you knew. When a person stands beside you during your hardest moments, it can feel impossible to imagine that they were hiding resentment or secrets all along.

The original poster (OP) believed her husband was her greatest source of support while she battled breast cancer and rebuilt her life afterward.

However, after discovering a hidden phone, OP uncovered years of secret messages that changed everything she believed about her marriage. Read on to find out how OP responded after learning the shocking truth and facing an impossible decision about her future.

'I survived cancer only to find that my husband of 11 years never loved me'

I've been with my husband for 11 years now, we have two beautiful children.

All this time, I always thought we were each other's soulmates and that nothing else could ever come between us.

He helped me get through the worst time of my life when I was diagnosed with b__ast cancer,

where he always assured me that we'll get through the whole ordeal together. I believed him as our family slowly got over my medical woes.

However, I recently learned that after all this time, he was praying for the cancer to spread far enough to k__l me.

I discovered this all on my own after I found out that he had a spare phone hidden under our bed when I was changing the sheets.

It was an older keypad model, it didn't even have the capability to install apps I think.

Something felt off, so I took it with me before confronting him.

When I asked him about it, he denied that it was his even though he'd rushed upstairs looking for it.

So I took the kids, went to my sister's house (we're in the same neighbourhood), and started reading the text messages.

The only number ever saved was a name of a fling he had before we got together (this woman went to the same high school as us.)

They reconnected about five years into our marriage and never stopped talking, despite her being in a relationship after I looked her up on Facebook.

Typing and recalling all of this is making my heart ache all over again. He told her that if the cancer ever does come back, they can finally be together.

I kept scrolling down and realized that they were secretly texting each other for about five years.

My husband's always been stoic, and he's never really been one to overtly show emotions and all that,

and here he was texting her "good morning" and "I love you" messages.

In one of the texts, he blamed me for wasting a decade of his life. He also said in the texts that he only stuck with me because of our...

I'm thinking of getting a divorce, but it's looked down upon in our country.

To make it worse, he's been threatening me and accused me of stealing the phone.

And the worst of all is that I have no idea how I'm going to break the news to my children.

Some betrayals hurt because they change the meaning of the past, not just the future. Surviving a serious illness often leaves people with a deeper appreciation for the relationships that carried them through it.

The OP believed she had faced one of the hardest experiences of her life with a devoted partner beside her. Discovering that the same person was secretly hoping for the worst created a completely different kind of pain: grief over the relationship she thought she had.

The emotional center of this story is not only infidelity. It is the collapse of trust and identity within a family. The OP spent years believing her husband’s support during cancer treatment came from love and commitment. Learning that he was privately maintaining another relationship and expressing resentment toward her forces her to question countless memories.

The messages were painful because they did not simply reveal an affair; they suggested that the person she relied on during her most vulnerable moments may have been emotionally disconnected for years.

A different perspective is that betrayal often involves two realities existing at the same time. The husband’s actions were deeply harmful, but they also reveal something about unresolved choices and avoidance. Instead of honestly confronting his feelings or making difficult decisions, he maintained a hidden emotional relationship while continuing the marriage.

The OP was left living in a relationship based on information she did not have. That imbalance is often what makes betrayal feel so destabilizing: one person has been making decisions with the full truth, while the other has not.

Psychologist Dr. Shirley Glass, a researcher on infidelity and author of Not “Just Friends”, explains that affairs often involve creating a secret emotional world that separates one partner from the other. She describes secrecy as one of the most damaging parts of betrayal because it breaks the sense of safety and openness that relationships depend on.

This insight helps explain why the OP’s pain goes beyond the existence of another woman. The hidden phone, years of messages, and private declarations created a separate reality inside the marriage.

The OP was fighting cancer, raising children, and rebuilding her health while her husband was emotionally investing elsewhere. The issue is not simply that he had feelings; it is that he allowed deception to become part of their family life.

The decision about divorce is also complicated by cultural expectations, children, and fear of starting over. However, staying married only because separation is judged negatively can create its own form of suffering. Children often benefit more from seeing healthy boundaries and honesty than from witnessing a relationship where trust has disappeared.

The OP’s first priority should be safety, emotional support, and careful planning. Major decisions do not need to be rushed while she is processing such a painful discovery. Speaking with trusted family members, legal professionals, or counselors can help her understand her options without feeling pressured by shame or outside expectations.

The hardest part of this story is that the OP survived something that was supposed to be the greatest threat to her life, only to face a different kind of loss afterward. But surviving cancer already proved something important: she can endure devastating moments and continue rebuilding.

The next chapter does not have to be defined by what someone else secretly wished for her. It can be defined by the life she chooses to create.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors urged OP to leave the marriage after discovering his disturbing wishes

elladoherty − You're only *thinking* about divorce, even after finding out he's praying for your death? *Run. *

Edgefish − I'm thinking of getting a divorce, but it's looked down upon in our country.

And wishing to your partner to get her cancer come back and k__l her is not looked down upon too? Divorce him like yesterday.

PuzzleheadedTap4484 − I would tell him “your wish is granted, you can be divorced so I don’t waste anymore of your time. ” And then file.

But get screen shots of everything and talk to a lawyer before talking to him and get your ducks in a row ready to file.

I don’t think a marriage could come back from that even with counseling.

kushywhitelife − please don't "think" about getting a divorce, please get out of there and find a better situation for you and your children

These commenters advised saving evidence, contacting a lawyer, and preparing carefully

FrescoInkwash − don't do anything until you've taken that phone to a lawyer.

pecileci − Tell the whole family, yours and his, tell his friends, email his work, get ahead of this NOW. He will try and make you look crazy.

Take pictures of everything on that phone, get a good lawyer. I don't care it's frowned upon, get a divorce yesterday.

Someone willingly lying to you for 5 YEARS and hoping you would just DIE, is someone never to be trusted, even with food and drinks.

GaryLooiCW − Who the duck cares if they look down on you for divorcing your husband? I've seen quite a few m__der documentaries to

know how this could end and I'm telling you, it's not gonna be good for you nor your children. If I were you, I'd gather evidence and hire a lawyer.

These users warned that OP may be in danger and should prioritize safety

danktempest − You are in great danger. You survived cancer but you may not survive him. He might try to end you.

Please form an escape plan as soon as possible. Even if people hate you for it, your life is more important.

These users offered emotional support, reminding OP she deserves love, safety, and respect

Logical-Put-2667 − Bro really traded a whole mansion for a tent, and he should be shamed to oblivion for that.

Go get that divorce because nothing tops his vile selfishness.

gotitaila31 − Oh no. Jesus Christ, this is one of the most brutal things I’ve ever read.

Cheating for 6 years is bad enough, but secretly hoping your cancer kills you so he can be with someone else is genuinely evil.

That is not something you caused, and it is not a reflection of your worth.

You are not broken, unlovable, or somehow less deserving because he chose to be cruel and dishonest.

His actions say everything about him and nothing about you. You survived cancer. You raised two children.

You loved this man sincerely and trusted him because you believed he was the person he pretended to be. There is no shame in that.

You are still worthy of real love, loyalty, safety, and someone who is genuinely grateful to have you. Please take the threats seriously.

Stay with your sister, save copies of every message, and talk to a lawyer before giving the phone back or meeting him alone.

Whether divorce is looked down on or not, staying married to someone who wished for your death is far worse.

Your children may not understand everything right now, but one day they will understand that their mother protected herself and them.

None of this is your fault.

Should she pursue divorce immediately after consulting a lawyer, or take more time while remaining safely separated? How should families respond when cultural expectations protect a marriage but not the person inside it?
