Woman Tells Aunt to Move If She Can’t Handle Her Breastfeeding Her 11-Month-Old – Now Family Is Upse

A sunny family picnic turned tense when one mother began nursing her 11-month-old daughter openly, only to face disapproving stares from her aunt.

The aunt suggested using a cover, joking about “no shame,” then complained to cousins about the mother “flashing” the family.

The mother’s sharp response, “move if it bothers you”, ended the immediate confrontation but left her wondering if she had crossed a line.

Was this a firm stand for her baby’s comfort or an unnecessarily blunt rebuke? The incident has Reddit buzzing, highlighting the delicate balance between personal choice and family expectations.

Woman Tells Aunt to Move If She Can’t Handle Her Breastfeeding Her 11-Month-Old - Now Family Is Upse

This Redditor’s breastfeeding clash is a wild ride of family tension!

'AITA for telling my aunt to move if she doesn’t want to see me breastfeed my daughter?'

As a note: my daughter is 11 months old and I’ve exclusively breastfed her from day one. We’ve have struggles from me not producing enough,

but we’ve overcame it and I’m very proud, considering with my son I was only able to breastfeed about three months because of lack of supply and poor latching

I was at a family picnic the following weekend and got to see my aunt who lives far away whom I don’t see often.

I was sitting next to her catching up when my baby’s dad brought my daughter over saying she wants to nurse.

I unclipped my right side of my nursing tank (the side away from my aunt) and my daughter latched on.

My aunt asked if I wanted something to cover up and I said no thank you, my daughter pulls off any cover I’ve tried and not much of my b**ast...

She made a joke about me having no shame which I laughed off, then told me even tho I’m comfortable feeding her without a cover maybe she or the rest...

I told her I was more Interested in me and my daughter being comfortable for the 10 minutes she would eat and if it bothered her she was welcome to...

She then scoffed at me but didn’t move, making a weird look at me then going into her phone and halting our conversation.

I don’t think I was out of line, but I heard her complaining to my cousins shortly after and they told me I shouldn’t feel so comfortable “flashing” my family.

In nicer words I told them to f**k off. I don’t feel ashamed to have to feed my daughter, but I’m wondering if I’m just so used to it it...

Should I have handled that differently? AITA?

Edit: thank you guys for all of your comments, it’s made me feel a lot more secure in my reaction.

Edit 2: my baby does eat solids and started at 6/7 months doing so! I meant exclusively as in we’ve never substituted with formula

Breastfeeding Boundaries vs. Family Judgement

For this mother, nursing her daughter without a cover was a matter of necessity and confidence.

Having overcome early struggles with breastfeeding, she valued her daughter’s comfort and independence, and with minimal exposure, she saw no reason to hide.

Her aunt’s repeated comments, combined with cousins whispering about “flashing,” escalated tension.

From the mother’s perspective, the aunt’s insistence reflected an outdated mindset rather than genuine concern, and the cousins’ reactions sexualized a natural act.

The confrontation highlighted a clash of expectations: a mother prioritizing her child versus relatives imposing personal discomfort onto her behavior.

The family dynamic further complicated matters. The aunt, likely guided by conservative norms, may have intended polite concern but instead came across as judgmental.

The cousins’ commentary added social pressure, turning a functional act into a perceived scandal.

The mother’s direct reply was intended to assert boundaries, making clear that if anyone was uncomfortable, the onus was on them to adjust, not her to stop feeding her child.

Expert Insight and Takeaways

Public breastfeeding is legally protected across all 50 U.S. states, yet cultural stigma persists, particularly across generations.

A 2024 La Leche League study found that 68% of mothers report discomfort or judgment when nursing in public. U.S.

CDC data shows that 83% of infants are breastfed at some point, with 25% exclusively for six months, emphasizing how common and necessary the practice is.

Lactation consultant Dr. Jack Newman advises, “Mothers should nurse confidently where they’re comfortable; others can adjust their gaze, not her actions”.

A softer phrasing, such as, “This works for us, but feel free to step away”, could have de-escalated the moment, but the mother’s firm reply effectively defended her baby’s needs.

Family members, meanwhile, could learn to respect boundaries without projecting discomfort.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

Reddit users quickly weighed in, largely sympathizing with the mother for prioritizing her daughter’s comfort and asserting personal boundaries.

7hr0wn − NTA, people who are offended by the fact that babies eat can shut their eyes or walk away. Babies. Eat. Breasts may be involved. Get over it.

Particular_Title42 − "She made a joke about me having no shame " That wasn't a joke. That was an insult. You have no shame and you shouldn't. BREASTS ARE NOT...

Men get to show theirs all the time. In other countries, women can walk around completely nude and unashamed because they know that nudity isn't inherently s**ual. NTA.

There's no better way to handle it and not cave to their demands.

WritingEducational23 − NTA. Exclusively b**ast-feeding an infant for 11 months is a remarkable achievement;

your aunt should have respected your decision to b**ast-feed without a cover in her presence.

You handled the situation gracefully and appropriately by respectfully declining her suggestion to cover up and suggesting she move if she was uncomfortable.

Many highlighted the ongoing cultural tension around public breastfeeding and noted how older relatives often struggle to separate personal discomfort from moral judgment.

zoopest − NTA babies gotta eat, prudes are gonna prude

CapoExplains − NTA. Some people are so weird about breastfeeding. "Flashing," good lord, you're feeding your baby, not ripping your top off and getting motorboated.

Your Aunt is being ridiculous and if she's too hung up about it to handle seeing a mother feeding her child because it involves a b**ast

(y'know, that thing mothers have used to feed their children for long before puritanical sensibilities were invented) that's her problem to deal with and yeah, she can look away, or...

or hop on a train back in time to the Victorian era when ladies knew not to show their ankles in public.

Like if she was just uncomfortable seeing it, still being kinda hung up about it and like "get over it" but whatever, but to liken it to flashing is so...

chameleonsEverywhere − NTA. Listen, I'm kind of a prude. I feel uncomfortable seeing other people's breasts - I was not raised in a body positive environment,

it's just something I'm very not used to seeing even though intellectually I know boobs are perfectly natural.

You know what I do when a woman has to expose a b**ast to feed her child around me? I simply LOOK AWAY.

Bam, problem solved. If your aunt is uncomfortable and can't control her own eyes, she should quietly excuse herself from the room. This is her problem, not yours.

The discussion emphasized that navigating family opinions requires both confidence from parents and patience from relatives, reinforcing the need for mutual respect.

Neenknits − The primary function of breasts is to feed babies. We hide stuff that is s**ual.

Requiring hiding the baby eating is sexualizing a baby and only creeps do that! NTA. Good for you mama, keep up the good work!

ETA If you want to be rude, one can say that if breasts are too s**ual to be seen feeding babies, then one can use a bottle.

What is a fake plastic reproduction of a s**ual body part called? A dildo! Notice I said this would be rude to say. I don’t recommend it.

But sometimes it’s fun to vent about people who are rude about breastfeeding this way. Best done out of their hearing…

TheZippoLab − 1. We have posts like this occasionally so our European Reddit friends have something to laugh about. 2. Tell your Aunt that Fox News is 💩, and she...

T_G_A_H − Nope. Absolutely NTA, and she was completely out of line, as well as your cousins. Anyone who’s the least bit “offended” by a baby nursing in their presence...

AnyRepresentative866 − NTA. babies can’t talk nor we can’t control their hunger. people are normalizing women not wearing a bra, so should breastfeeding.

Are these takes nourishing the debate or just stirring the pot?

This breastfeeding impasse demonstrates that an uncomplicated task such as feeding a child can trigger family conflict.

Was telling her aunt to shift positions a brave act on behalf of her child’s comfort, or was it simply too forward for family cohesiveness?

In this situation, should the mother have tried to smooth the situation over or let family members get used to her decisions on their own? What would you do in dealing with family members who are possibly critical of natural parenting decisions?

The dialogue remains open, leaving the audience to evaluate where you personally draw the line between respect and personal freedom.
