Woman Tries to Take Another Shopper’s Geraniums, But Her Plan Backfires at the Market

Sometimes, the simplest shopping trips can turn into unexpected little battles when someone decides they are entitled to what another person already chose.

A shared marketplace does not mean one person gets to control everything they see.

The original poster (OP) visited a local farmers market hoping to find specific red geraniums from a vendor.

After discovering the plants were only $1 each, OP began selecting a few more flowers, including some pink ones.

However, another customer quickly decided she wanted many of the same plants and started taking over the area, even paying close attention to the flowers OP had already picked.

Read on to see how OP handled the awkward encounter and why the other shopper left frustrated.

Shopper at a farmers market searches for affordable pink and red geraniums

Woman Tries to Take Another Shopper’s Geraniums, But Her Plan Backfires at the Market
not the actual photo'Lady wanted the geraniums I picked-out at local farm market?'Had been looking for red geraniums, and I contacted a local farmers market

to see whether any of the vendors might have any for sale. Was told a

vendor would bring some on Saturday, so I made sure to arrive at the start

of the market. I picked-up a few red pots on one side of the tent and

walked to the other side to look at the pink geraniums. I asked how much

they were as I was poking around to find some that had the same leaves /

height, and when the vendor said $1 / pot, a woman who was looking at

other plants said “I’ll take 6 of the geraniums” (there were maybe 20

geranium pots total for sale). She stood there for a minute and watched

me continue to put what I wanted in my box, and then came over and

started grabbing the pink plants from the table. She was obviously on a

mission, and since I already had 4 pink pots in my box, I walked back over to

find a few more red ones (now that I knew they were only $1). She actually

followed me, looking at the plants in MY box. I said “there are a bunch of

red plants under this table,” and she replied “I don’t want red, I want pink”

while glaring at me. I paid for my 8 pots, and left her fuming. (I saw her

carrying a box of pots to her car as I was driving away, which I was glad to see.)

Sometimes a small everyday moment can reveal a surprising amount about human behavior.

A simple trip to a farmers market, buying flowers, or searching for something special should be a peaceful experience.

Yet even ordinary situations can become uncomfortable when people allow competition or entitlement to take over.

In OP’s story, the conflict was never really about geraniums. The plants were inexpensive, and there were still plenty available.

The tension came from one person seeing another shopper’s choices as an obstacle rather than simply another person enjoying the same opportunity.

OP arrived early, asked about availability, carefully selected plants, and made a purchase.

The other shopper’s frustration seemed to come from wanting a specific outcome and feeling upset when someone else was already choosing from the same limited selection.

A different perspective is that the second shopper may have experienced a feeling of urgency or scarcity.

When people believe something valuable is disappearing, they sometimes react as though they are losing something that was already theirs.

Psychologists describe this as a scarcity mindset, where limited availability can make people focus more intensely on obtaining an item and less on social awareness or fairness.

In this case, the woman may not have consciously viewed herself as rude, but her desire to secure the pink geraniums pushed her into behavior that felt invasive.

This helps explain why such a small interaction became uncomfortable.

The woman was not simply buying flowers; she was reacting to the idea that someone else might get what she wanted first.

However, understanding her possible mindset does not mean her behavior was acceptable.

Following another shopper, staring into their box, and acting as though another person’s choices were interfering with her own purchase crossed a social boundary.

OP’s response was actually quite restrained.

Instead of arguing or escalating, OP simply continued shopping, purchased the plants already selected, and left.

Sometimes the best way to handle a tense interaction is not to match someone else’s frustration but to calmly maintain your own boundaries.

Small conflicts like this are reminders that everyday kindness often comes down to recognizing that other people are not competitors.

A farmers market is meant to be a shared space where everyone gets the chance to find something they love.

There was enough room for both people to leave with flowers, but only one person chose to turn the moment into a confrontation.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters agreed that entitled people need boundaries and should not always get what they want

National_Pension_110 − Yeah when people like that are around, you’ve got

to guard your selections very closely or they steal them when you look away.

Kene6969 − When dealing with entitled people, make sure they don't get

what they want.

AZDarkknight − Too bad, so sad. I guess she knows now to get there early

(but probably not).

These commenters shared sarcastic responses about people wanting things they cannot have

Thick_Ad_9269 − I would have told her that people in hell want ice water.

YakCertain5472 − People in hell want ice water.

Tootsie-Chateau59 − “Come back next week and maybe there will be more.

” But I wanted the pink ones! “My condolences. ”

These commenters supported dismissing the person’s complaints and treating the situation as their own problem

Own-Eagle-2135 − "then it sucks to be you, doesn't it?"

cyclonesandy − I would have told her “ That sounds like a you problem “

These commenters contributed humorous sayings about entitlement and learning to accept disappointment

AI-Replybot − "It's good to want. Builds character."

ZookeepergameWise774 − My aunt always said “ then want must be your master”.

fetfreak74 − Tell her "want in one hand and s__t in the other, see which fills up faster. "

OP went to the farmers market with a simple goal: find the red geraniums she had been searching for.

What started as a normal plant shopping trip turned into an awkward competition when another shopper tried to claim the same flowers OP was already selecting.

In the end, OP stayed polite, bought the plants she wanted, and left the other shopper to make her own choices.

Do you think OP handled the situation fairly, or should she have shared the flowers to avoid conflict?
