Woman Upgrades to Delta One, Then MIL Says First Class Isn’t for “Kids”

Being given a fully paid family vacation is something many people would be grateful for, but generosity can sometimes come with expectations that are never actually spoken aloud. What happens when one person decides to spend their own money for a little extra comfort while everyone else sticks with the original arrangement?

The OP and her husband were taking an overseas family cruise that her father-in-law had generously paid for, including their flights. Everyone was booked in Comfort+ while the in-laws traveled separately in premium cabins.

Because the long flights would be especially difficult for her tall husband, who has back problems, the OP decided to use her own points and money to upgrade both of them to Delta One. She thought it would be a harmless surprise, especially since the other adults were traveling with their spouses.

Instead, her mother-in-law questioned why two 30-year-olds needed first class and wondered who would help with the baby traveling with them. Read on to see why this simple upgrade created so much family tension.

She used her own points and money to upgrade her and her husband’s long-haul flights, but her in-laws reacted as though leaving the family seating arrangement was selfish

not the actual photo

'AITA for upgrading my husband's and I's flights on a family vacation?'

My husband (M30) and I (F30) went on a cruise abroad with his immediate family.

My FIL booked this trip 2 years ago and generously paid for everyone’s flights, cruise fees, hotel rooms, excursions, etc.

When we travel with my in-laws, my FIL always pays for my husband, me, my siblings-in-law,

and their spouses to fly in economy or economy w/ extra legroom.

My FIL and MIL either fly first class or charter private.

I want to be clear that I have never, and will never, complain about economy**;

I always fly economy, apart from a handful of occasions in my life, and I feel grateful to be on these trips and to have such a generous FIL.

This was the first time we did a family trip abroad.

For this particular trip, I had the points and money to upgrade my husband and me from Comfort+

(which my FIL booked us on with my siblings-in-law) to Delta One (the flat-bed seats).

My husband is a tall man with back issues, had never flown in flat-bed seats before, and the flights were 10+ hours each,

so I wanted to surprise him with this upgrade. I didn’t think it would offend anyone given my FIL and MIL were also in Delta One,

this was a one-time special upgrade, and my siblings-in-law are all adults and with their spouses in Comfort+, so no concerns of splitting up the family.

Also, my BIL and his wife had a baby 10 mths prior and, *despite my FIL asking them to reconsider*,

they decided to come on the trip and bring baby with them. None of us had kids when the trip was booked 2 years ago,

so the itinerary and cruise line were not baby-friendly. I had already intended to upgrade us before their pregnancy,

but their decision to bring their baby solidified my decision to upgrade (although I’d never say that).

My husband and I are prioritizing travel before we have kids, so we wouldn't have enjoyed sitting beside a crying baby on every flight.

As much as we love baby, the entire mood of the trip was altered. It was no longer the relaxing and adventurous vacation we had envisioned

and the trip used up all of our vacation days. Sitting in the lounge and plane was the *only* time we didn't hear crying.

Our upgrade has caused some tension from my BIL’s wife and my MIL towards me.

My MIL told my husband that first class isn't for "kids" (referring to us 30 y/os), that sitting in economy w/ the siblings makes for great memories,

and "who is going to help with the baby?" (if we wanted to take care of kids while traveling then we wouldn't wait to have kids ourselves).

I want to give my BIL's wife grace given that she's postpartum, but she spent the trip "whispering" to my MIL, side-eyeing me,

will interrupt anytime someone asks me a question, and is *extra* bubbly with others but flat towards my husband and I.

My husband can’t tell if his brother is offended. My FIL was surprised but not offended; he doesn’t like surprises,

so I should have told him ahead of time. I truly did not think this would cause issues, but maybe I'm not as sensitive as I should be?

Few gifts create as much confusion as one that accidentally appears to change the rules of a family tradition.

The OP wasn’t trying to reject her in-laws or suggest that economy travel was beneath her.

She had a specific reason for upgrading, had the financial means to do it, and wanted to give her husband something comfortable on an unusually long trip.

The emotional tension seems to come from what the upgrade symbolized rather than what it actually cost.

Her FIL had generously arranged the family’s travel, and the established pattern was that the adult children and their spouses traveled together in Comfort+ while the parents traveled separately in premium cabins.

By moving herself and her husband into Delta One, the OP unintentionally stepped outside that shared arrangement.

Her MIL apparently interpreted the decision as abandoning the family experience, while the BIL’s wife may have interpreted it as refusing to participate in the practical demands created by traveling with a baby.

Meanwhile, the OP saw it as a personal gift and a way to make a ten-hour flight more comfortable.

There is another perspective that makes the conflict easier to understand without making the OP wrong.

Families often develop rituals that carry emotional meaning beyond their practical purpose.

Research on family traditions has found that shared rituals can strengthen a family’s sense of identity and belonging.

When someone opts out, even for perfectly reasonable reasons, other members can sometimes experience it as social distancing rather than an individual preference.

That may be why “who is going to help with the baby?” became part of the criticism.

The upgrade may have been perceived as a withdrawal from the group’s collective experience.

She wasn’t obligated to sacrifice a comfortable ten-hour flight simply so everyone could sit together.

Nor was she responsible for childcare merely because she was traveling with her nephew.

The parents had chosen to bring their baby despite knowing the trip was not designed around infants.

That decision could reasonably change how other adults wanted to structure their own experience.

The postpartum context also deserves some compassion.

A parent traveling internationally with a ten-month-old may be exhausted, overstimulated, and anxious about how the baby is affecting everyone else.

Watching another couple move to a quiet premium cabin could understandably trigger feelings of being left to manage the difficult parts alone.

That can explain the emotional reaction without turning it into an obligation for the OP.

The FIL’s response is perhaps the most useful piece of feedback.

He wasn’t offended by the upgrade itself, but he would have preferred advance notice.

That is a reasonable etiquette point because he organized and paid for the original arrangements.

Telling him beforehand could have prevented surprise without requiring permission.

The OP therefore doesn’t seem unreasonable for upgrading.

She may have underestimated the symbolic meaning the family attached to traveling together, but that is different from doing something wrong.

The healthiest approach is probably not to defend the upgrade repeatedly.

A simple explanation is enough: she appreciated the trip, was grateful for the flights, and used her own points and money to make a long flight more comfortable for her husband.

Family memories do not become less meaningful simply because two adults spent ten hours in different seats.

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters felt the family expected OP to provide childcare and sacrifice personal comfort in exchange for the supposedly generous trip

EmilyAnn1790 − When a free gift comes with a high price.

NTA. The free trip also comes with a whole heap of

expectations and entitlements about how you spend your time (childcare) and your money (upgrades).

Powerful-Account2204 − NTA Your parents still view you as

children and not adults. That’s the first thing happening here.

They have their “special time” in first class and they didn’t like

that you were there. Second, the siblings were expecting help

with baby and were jealous. Your SIL is the one who is being sensitive.

Unfortunately some people are insufferable when they have

children and other people do not and either expect special

treatment or think that everyone else’s world should also

revolve around them I would ignore the whole thing and move on. And think twice before going on another trip

shey-they-bitch − SIL is just jealous . .. and that's not your baby, you have no obligations to help them out

These Redditors agreed that OP had every right to spend her own money on a more comfortable seat

LdiJ46 − NTA. Your in-laws are a bit odd, aren't they? There is

nothing wrong with you upgrading you and your husband's seats.

geekcrobinett − Great memories? On an airplane? Ah, yes, I

still recall the great flight of August 2026 with my siblings-in-

law and their 10 month old when I wasn't inconvenienced at

all or stared at my small screen while ignoring everyone

around me for ten hours. Such great memories. NTA. I would've upgraded, too.

HarperStrings − NTA. It's not like you ditched the entire family

for the vacation. You just upgraded your flight to the same

area your MIL and FIL were in. The comment about it not

being a place for "kids" implies your MIL likes feeling above

the rest of you and you upgrading ruined it for her, which is a very bizarre way for her to feel.

LadybugGirltheFirst − MIL was perfectly welcome to sit in Comfort+ and help take care of the baby. NTA

This commenter believed MIL disliked the upgrade because it disrupted her perceived special status and control over the family

ArgumentKey3712 − Definitely NTA. Your ruined the little

power play dynamic for your MIL. She’ll just have to get over it

The upgrade itself seems almost comically small compared with everything it uncovered.

One couple used personal money and points for more comfortable seats, yet the response exposed assumptions about status, family bonding, and who might help with a baby.

Research on family vacations suggests adults can easily fall back into old childhood roles when everyone gathers again.

Perhaps giving the father-in-law a heads-up would have prevented surprise, but should two married 30-year-olds need family approval to upgrade their own flights?

Or did the lie-flat seats simply reveal an expectation nobody wanted to admit?
