Woman Watches Best Friend Fall for a Married Dad, Then Questions the Friendship Too

Sometimes the people closest to us can make choices that leave us questioning everything we thought we knew about them. It becomes even harder when those choices affect an entire family and involve someone who is already in a vulnerable situation.

The original poster (OP) shared her disappointment after watching her best friend become involved with a married man from her child’s school. What started as innocent playdates between families slowly turned into private conversations, emotional attachment, and a relationship that crossed boundaries.

Despite knowing his pregnant wife was hurt and uncomfortable, OP’s friend continued pursuing the connection. Now, OP is struggling with how to view her friend’s actions and whether she can still support someone whose choices caused so much pain. Scroll down to see how Reddit reacted to this complicated situation.

not the actual photo

'My best friend just ruined someone’s marriage'

There is a family at her daughter’s school that she met, and started doing play dates with their kids about it.

The dad is the one who shows up to most school / play activities. His wife is pregnant and isn’t as social. Let’s call best friend Jada.

Jada and the dad started doing more play dates together, which turned into them “hanging out” together alone.

Hang outs turned into emotional cheating which has left his wife devastated.

She has been communicating that she is uncomfortable with this relationship, and already outed him for emotional cheating.

Still, Jada pursues the relationship. They talk/ text all day and flirt. Last night they went out for drinks and confessed love for each other.

He went home and told his pregnant wife the truth.

I’m so disappointed. Jada has gone through so much.

Just got out of a terrible marriage so maybe isn’t in the most clear headspace boundary wise and I think the chemistry is really comforting for her right now.

I’ve seen a lot of different takes on situations like this.

The husband owes the wife loyalty, yes. But Jada had a major role in this happening.

I don’t know how; as a woman and as a mother you could participate in a husband cheating on his pregnant wife. Their baby is due soon. Wtf man.

One of the hardest forms of disappointment is watching someone you love make choices that conflict with the person you believed them to be. Anger becomes complicated because affection does not disappear overnight. You can understand why someone is vulnerable and still feel deeply disturbed by what they are doing.

That is where the OP seems to be emotionally. She is not merely judging Jada for developing feelings for a married man. She knows her best friend recently survived a difficult marriage and recognizes that attention, affection, and romantic excitement may feel especially comforting right now.

Yet understanding Jada’s vulnerability does not erase the consequences. The pregnant wife explicitly communicated that this relationship was hurting her, and both Jada and the husband continued escalating it anyway. For OP, that transforms an accidental emotional connection into a series of conscious decisions.

There is an uncomfortable perspective worth adding. People leaving painful relationships can sometimes become particularly susceptible to intense new connections because those relationships offer validation and emotional escape. Jada may therefore genuinely experience this man as someone who finally understands her.

But an explanation is not an absolution. The husband bears primary responsibility for protecting his marriage because he made the commitment to his wife. Jada, however, still has agency, particularly after learning that her involvement was causing another person significant distress.

Relationship researcher Shirley Glass spent decades studying affairs and challenged the assumption that infidelity begins only with sex. Her work emphasized that emotional affairs can develop gradually when people create intimacy, secrecy, and emotional boundaries with someone outside their committed relationship that increasingly compete with their partner.

Glass famously described healthy relationship boundaries using the idea of keeping “walls and windows” in appropriate places: openness toward a partner and protective boundaries around potentially threatening outside relationships.

That framework makes the progression here important. Playdates were not inherently problematic. Friendship was not automatically betrayal either.

The danger emerged when private time, constant texting, flirting, the wife’s expressed discomfort, and eventually declarations of love accumulated. There were multiple opportunities to recognize the boundary and retreat before reaching this point.

OP also faces a separate moral problem: what happens when someone else’s behavior changes how safe a friendship feels? She does not have to excuse Jada because she understands her pain, nor must she decide that Jada is permanently irredeemable. Compassion and accountability can coexist.

Perhaps the healthiest position is refusing to become either Jada’s accomplice or her executioner. OP can acknowledge that her friend is hurting while making clear that she will not normalize choices that knowingly deepen another family’s pain.

Friendship sometimes means offering comfort. Other times, it means refusing to tell someone that what they are doing is okay simply because you love them.

See what others had to share with OP:

These Redditors urged OP to end the friendship because Jada had proven herself untrustworthy

Bitter-Picture5394 − Stop talking to her

ObligationNo2288 − This would be the end of our friendship. I don’t want this type of person in my life.

Matic_Soil_999 − You should cut her off. She would probably do the same thing to you and your husband if the same situation presented itself

and she was attracted to him. Untrustworthy, selfish and immoral, she only cares about herself.

Top_Progress3357 − Learn from my mistakes. I was very very close to someone and she was constantly entertaining married men.

Fast forward few years and she was entertaining the man I’m married to. If they’ll do it to someone else, they’ll do it to you.

sohcordohc − They both made their decisions OP.

If you expressed your opinion or concerns earlier on, there’s nothing you can do unless you feel like being a third wheel.

If you don’t morally agree don’t speak to them or if you’re complacent ignore it and tell her you don’t want to hear about it.

These commenters focused on the harm the affair could cause the wife, children, and unborn baby

truisluv − To cause someone else pain because you are in pain is not the answer. You just don't ruin the wife's life but the children too.

I don't think I could stay friends with someone who could do that to someone. This is not a friend who has morals or who ypu could trust.

wishingforarainyday − Jada should be ashamed of herself. Shes not getting a prize with that Ah. She knows he will cheat (on his pregnant wife! )

and he knows she’s willing to cheat and break up a family. They are both awful. I hope his wife gets tested.

Some STIs are especially dangerous for the baby and they are certainly physically cheating.

I hope you end your friendship with such a dirtbag

PeaceNo6149 − This happened to me. I was the wife. Your friend is not just in a bad place, she is morally bankrupt.

The trauma this has caused the wife and children will affect them for the rest of their lives.

AromaPapaya − seems like both were missing something. .. emotional cheating is (IMHO) worse than physical, but both are awful

These commenters shared personal experiences showing how affairs can permanently destroy trust and friendship

nonsense_ninja − I had a best friend who did this to another best friend.

The boyfriend of one BFF started working with me and the other BFF and commuting to and from work with us.

They grew uncomfortably close and I started to catch on that there was more than friendship happening there.

I confronted the BFF I was working with and she tearfully admitted it (I screamed to get it out of her, not proud of it but that's what it took).

Because of the position I was in, I had to tell the other BFF. It was awful.

The messenger always gets punished, and I lost both friendships for a time because of it and the boyfriend continued to sleep with both.

There were eventually attempts at repairs made to both friendships but I found myself unable to shake the feeling that someday my BFF would do the same to me

because I think she was motivated more out of jealousy of what the other friend had than even attraction to the boyfriend himself.

When I met my now husband I knew that I didn't want to have to worry about it ever being my turn and I ended that friendship completely.

Ironically, the other BFF had finally ended her relationship with the boyfriend for good and made big efforts

to make things right between me and her so we ended up coming back together just as I was leaving the other friendship.

In my case, I believe with my whole heart that things worked out correctly because I couldn't imagine carrying around the resentment

and distrust in that friendship for life, always worrying about her becoming jealous of my happiness and wanting to take it for herself.

I don't wish her ill but I couldn't live like that.

You'll have to decide if you can live with and maintain a relationship with a friend who behaves this way now.

There's no right answer that I can give other than be honest with yourself and live well with the consequences of whatever that decision is.

I wish you luck and peace, you're in a hard position.

Would you stay friends with someone after seeing them knowingly participate in an affair? Or can one terrible period in a person’s life be separated from who they are overall?
