Woman With Fish Allergy Gets Takeout While Family Eats Fish, Then Dad Still Expects Her to Wash the Dishes

Family routines often work perfectly until an unusual situation exposes a gap nobody has considered before. A rule that normally feels fair can suddenly become questionable when one person is excluded from the very thing the rule was designed around.

One 26-year-old woman encountered that problem while spending a week with her parents. Her family normally shares home-cooked dinners, with anyone who does not cook responsible for cleaning afterward. But one evening, her father prepared fish for everyone else despite knowing she was allergic, and offered to pay for separate takeout instead.

She accepted the arrangement and ate pizza while her family enjoyed their meal. Then her father reminded her that because she had not cooked, the dishes were supposedly still her responsibility. Scroll down to see why she felt she was being asked to clean up after a dinner she could not even eat.

A woman questions whether she should clean up a family dinner she could not eat because of allergies

'AITA for refusing the help with a meal I cannot eat?'

I (F26) am visiting my parents for a week. We always cook sit-down dinners, and the rule is that whoever doesn’t cook does

the dishes and cleans the kitchen- the meal is shared, so the labor is also shared. We all agree that this is fair.

This morning, my dad asked me if I was okay with him making fish for dinner for himself, my mom, and my sister.

I am allergic to fish. He offered for me to “fend for myself” (meaning to order takeout and he would pay for it).

I am sure that most people would love this, but I have so many allergies that I have about two takeout options and I am sick of them.

He knows this. However, this is the first time this issue has come up - apparently they thought they’d have time to make the fish

before I arrived, but didn’t, and now that they have it they don’t want to waste it - so even though smelling fish makes me queazy, I told him to...

I ordered a pizza, we all ate together, and I parted ways with them for the night.

Five minutes later my dad knocked on my door, saying, “Is this the day we decided not to do chores?” in a joking way.

I was surprised and said that I didn’t think I would be doing the dishes. He said that was the rule: if you don’t cook, you do dishes.

I said that that made sense when you have been fed, but because he went out of his way to tell me that he wouldn’t be feeding me tonight,

why would I do the chores associated with the meal I was excluded from?

He said that because he paid for my pizza, he DID feed me, and I should come down and do the dishes.

There wasn’t really a resolution - I caved and came down to the dishes mostly done, and finished washing the last few.

Leaving aside the allergy issue (I don’t think I should have to do the dishes for something I am allergic to, although I can make minimal skin

contact with fish),

I still don’t think I was wrong to refuse doing the dishes when I didn’t receive the meal.

My sister said that that was like being rewarded for getting takeout, but I feel like I was both snubbed on the meal and then forced to clean up after...

Anyone out there have thoughts?

(P.S. We don’t actually think of meals as transactional, but this is my attempt to explain the the reasoning behind our dynamic)

Family rules usually work because everyone understands the exchange behind them. In this household, dinner has always been communal: one person cooks, everyone eats, and whoever did not cook handles the cleanup.

That arrangement feels fair because everyone benefits from the same meal. The conflict began when the father changed one half of that bargain—his daughter would not be included in dinner because of her fish allergy—but still expected the other half to remain exactly the same.

Her frustration is therefore about more than washing a few dishes. She had already accommodated the family by agreeing that they could cook fish despite knowing the smell made her queasy. She then arranged a separate meal for herself because the family dinner was medically unsuitable.

Being asked afterward to clean the cookware and dishes from the meal she could not safely eat understandably felt less like participating in family life and more like being assigned cleanup duty for everyone else.

The father’s perspective is not completely unreasonable. He paid for her pizza and probably viewed that as fulfilling his responsibility to provide dinner.

From his perspective, the established household rule still applied: he organized dinner, she did not cook, therefore she helped clean. But that interpretation focuses on the wording of the rule rather than the principle that originally made it fair.

Psychologists studying household responsibilities repeatedly find that perceived fairness, rather than perfectly equal quantities of work, strongly influences satisfaction.

The American Psychological Association has noted that more equitable divisions of household duties are associated with less stress and better family relationships.

Psychologist Laurence Steinberg similarly advises parents and adult children living together to explicitly discuss expectations around chores and mealtimes rather than assuming childhood rules automatically fit adult circumstances.

The allergy also should not be treated as an irrelevant technicality. Food Allergy Research & Education warns that fish allergies can cause severe reactions and that proteins released while fish is cooking may pose a risk to some allergic people.

It recommends avoiding cross-contact and carefully cleaning cookware and surfaces after allergen-containing meals. That makes requiring the allergic family member to handle cleanup especially questionable unless everyone knows it is medically safe for her.

A better rule would preserve the spirit of shared labor rather than apply it mechanically. She could clean after a meal she actually shares, handle another household task, or clean up her own takeout while the people who ate the fish handle the fish-related dishes.

She was not asking to be rewarded for ordering pizza. She was asking the family to recognize that once dinner stopped being shared, the usual dinner bargain had changed too.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors stressed that OP should not handle dishes contaminated with a serious allergen

Salt_My_Watermelon − NTA next time your family pulls a stunt like this just leave and eat elsewhere.

I have a shellfish allergy and if I smell it I will be sick at best and anaphylactic at worst. Making you clean up their allergen laden meal was not...

Square_Owl5883 − NTA no you should not be doing the dishes after a meal you didn’t eat. And no the pizza doesn’t count.

It’s a meal you were allergic to and it’s still risky washing dishes associated with fish.

JerseyLC8 − NTA. I'm a parent and I would never cook something my kid was allergic too in the house, ever.

What a way to make someone feel unwelcome. People can get anaphylaxis from the air when cooking fish and shellfish.

These commenters felt OP had already cleaned up their own food and owed nothing more.

Librarianatrix − NTA! It was really weird of him to expect you to clean up after a meal you couldn't eat.

Drewness326 − I did my dishes. I threw the pizza box away.

These users said the incident was enough to reconsider future family visits or simply leave next time

Glittering_Role1658 − NTA: I might have to seriously reconsider my visits with my family after something like this.

No-Singer-9706 − NTA. But i would just say okay here's the money for the pizza, see you next time I visit and leave.

Its odd to ask someone visiting to do chores when you dont even live there anymore. Do they ask friends to do the same.

Just want to edit my comment as its gotten a lot of comments.

Its completely understandable if you and your family have these things in place when you visit. (Ie cleaning and doing chores)

For me and my extended family we never let guest clean in our homes whether it be for 1 night or multiple. They are guests here for a visit.

(I have offered many times over the years to clean up at my in laws only to get told to stop. After so many years you kinda just stop)

shgrdrbr − NTA, i'm completely with your reasoning.

Cat_Lady3000 − I get the whole help with cleanup, but if you have a n allergy it's probably best not to tempt fate?

But I still would have stayed and help cleared the table and what not even if I didn't directly wash dishes

This commenter argued that since the family paid for OP’s pizza, helping with cleanup was still reasonable.

Willing-Aide2575 − You didnt fend for yourself, he paid for your food Seems like you should do the dishes.

When he qsked you earlier if you had an issue with this, and then asked again if you had an issue with this,

that would have been the time to say no thanks. .. ile buy my own pizza

Was Dad technically following the rule, or applying it far too literally?
