Worker’s Months-Long Petty Revenge Ends When The CEO Personally Picks Up Chairs

Workplace revenge does not always involve dramatic resignations, public confrontations, or expensive sabotage. Sometimes it is nothing more than creating one tiny inconvenience at a time and waiting to see how long management takes to notice.

That is exactly what this employee did after months of feeling ignored and mistreated by the company. Each day, they quietly loosened one light bulb and tipped over a single chair in areas that rarely received attention.

The plan caused no real damage, but eventually triggered emails, staff complaints, and even talk of installing cameras.

What looked like meaningless mischief was actually fueled by a long history of broken promises, unsafe working conditions, and management refusing to address serious concerns. Scroll down to see why the employee considered the CEO’s reaction a small but satisfying victory.

A mistreated employee creates tiny workplace annoyances to see whether management notices

'My job just now noticed the unscrewed light bulbs and tipped over chairs'

Extremely stupid, and extremely petty. I know. But its the best I can do.

No damage, nothing like that, just mild inconvenience for a company that routinely treats me badly.

For the last few months I've been gently unscrewing lightbulbs (one a day) in one area and tipping over chairs

(also one a day) in another specific area daily just to see if they would eventually notice.

Last month they finally sent an email out about how the light bulbs are getting slightly unscrewed and that

it's wasting staff time having to s__ew them back in.

I took it as a small victory and stopped since they were talking about adding cameras in the area.

However, I did keep tipping over one single chair a day until the CEO

(this area is near their secondary office and nobody ever goes there. This was my true intent.)

Finally sent an email about it today where they asked about it and stated they went around the area to pick each chair up.

They have no idea it was me, and honestly it doesn't get much better than mildly

inconviencing the owner like that so I'm backing off. Besides, they're installing a camera there anyway.

Edit: lol @ those of you who seem to have an issue with my genuinely petty revenge. Have you seen the sub you're in?

Edit 2: well into my 3rd shift and nobody has approached me.

Sorry guys, if they knew it was me and had a shred of proof I'd know by now.. Edit 3: WHY ITS REVENGE!

I have tried numerous times to schedule a meet up with CEO about these issues, and CEO simply shrugs it off and even gaslit me.

Our old manager and his boss were best friends (they only got fired because they were stealing gas).

Together they targetted me and wrote me up for something I didnt do

and then dropped me to one shift a month against my wishes while they told everyone I wanted it.

I talked to CEO (who was just passing by) about it and all they said was "No, they aren't targetting you."

Our manager threatened us with write ups for discussing wages which is illegal. CEO just sat idly by and did nothing.

My manager got a slap on the wrist, nothing more.

Manager proceeded to target my friend, forcing him to quit due to the stress and anxiety. He even got suicidal.

The above caused me to ask for a raise because I learned that all the newer people were making more than me.

I was promised a fair raise and "a little more than 19.00 an hour" for being a good worker.

CEO has yet to authorize it and this is now the 7th month of waiting. I was given a tiny raise that didnt bring me even 19.00 an hour.

We were forced to drive our department vehicle that barely worked.

For fucks sake the exhaust was leaking into the cab, with barely working windows.

It made us feel sick, and we were ignored until we got OSHA involved.

CEO and upper management ignored our concerns until we had to grab them by the balls.

There is no communication. We never, ever see the higher ups. Including CEO.

They care more about tipped chairs than giving me or anyone in my department the time of day to listen to our concerns.

The "workers" who screwed the bulbs back in constantly throw my department under the bus.

They expect us to do their busy work while they sit on their ass, and they never help us with anything..

Complaints are entirely ignored by CEO and upper management until you make s__t hit the fan..

They do not respect availability. Another grievance I cant share with CEO because they are "too busy" to talk..

CEO and Upper Management consistently make bad decisions that end up f__king my department over. Hours, for example.

From a third-person perspective, the employee’s behavior did not begin in a vacuum. They described months of feeling mistreated, underpaid, and dismissed by management. Previous supervisors allegedly reduced their shifts unfairly, misrepresented their wishes, and targeted coworkers.

A promised raise remained unresolved for seven months, while newer employees reportedly earned more. Most seriously, workers were expected to use a department vehicle with exhaust entering the cab until an OSHA complaint forced management to respond.

Against that background, unscrewing one light bulb and overturning one chair each day became a private experiment: would leadership notice these minor inconveniences more quickly than workers’ actual concerns?

The answer appeared to confirm the employee’s bitterness. Management circulated emails about the bulbs and chairs, discussed installing cameras, and the CEO personally walked through the area restoring furniture.

To the employee, this attention demonstrated that senior leaders were perfectly capable of acting promptly when inconvenienced themselves. The revenge therefore felt symbolic rather than destructive. No property was damaged, and the acts were deliberately stopped once surveillance was mentioned.

Still, another perspective is that the prank created unnecessary work for employees who may have had no control over management’s failures. A loosened bulb can also create maintenance or safety concerns, while repeated unexplained behavior may make coworkers feel watched or unsettled.

More importantly, if the employee were identified, management could focus on misconduct rather than the wage, safety, and scheduling complaints that prompted it. The protest might feel satisfying while weakening the employee’s credibility and employment security.

The National Labor Relations Board states that many private-sector employees have the right to discuss wages and to act together regarding pay, safety, and other working conditions.

Employers generally may not threaten or discipline workers merely for engaging in protected concerted activity. The NLRB also notes, however, that purely individual complaints or unrelated misconduct are not automatically protected.

That distinction matters here. The employee’s strongest position lies in documenting unsafe equipment, unequal pay, ignored complaints, scheduling problems, and any retaliation connected to workers raising collective concerns.

The chair-tipping campaign expresses frustration, but it does not clearly advance those issues. Instead, it gives an already unresponsive employer an easier problem to investigate.

Ultimately, the revenge is understandable because it exposed a painful contrast: leadership reacted faster to overturned chairs than to employees reporting conditions that made them physically ill. But its emotional effectiveness should not be confused with strategic effectiveness.

The employee may have won a small psychological victory, yet the more lasting form of resistance would involve records, written complaints, collective action, and appropriate labor or safety agencies.

A chair can briefly inconvenience a CEO. Evidence can force an organization to answer for how it treats its workers.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These Redditors said the prank signaled it was time to find a new job

pizzaredditnamepizza − You’ve probably already been caught. Time for a new job.

Ravio11i − Better revenge would be to find another job

Jolly-Slice-6722 − Time to look for a new job.

I knew it was time for me when I scooped water out of the toilet with a coffee pot and made coffee for my boss with it.

CatlessBoyMom − Sorry, you’re screwed, but it may be just the turn you need. Better luck at your next job.

This group praised the stunt as clever, harmless petty revenge

MindDump_787 − Time to be the shining star. Tell them you have single handedly solved the chair tipping problem.

Soundy106 − Putting the "petty" back in r/pettyrevenge \- well done!

These commenters joked about the prank while warning OP to stay quiet

southdakotagirl − Please tell me the email had the line we dont have the time to s__ew around.

bee_happs − Good on ya. The camera thing is ridic. I bet they won’t. Just chill and have a larf about it now.

Just don’t tell a single soul at work because they will spill it the second they drink alcohol.

This Redditor suggested escalating the sabotage by slowly removing staples

Vegetable_Road8143 − If you get in early and still no cameras, go and remove all but 10,

a small amount of, staples so they run out w/in the day. Do it everyday. In about a week you'll hear grumbling.

This commenter argued the prank mainly inconvenienced coworkers, not the owner

martphon − inconveniencing fellow staff members more than the owner

Do you think the employee’s prank was harmless workplace satire, or did it unfairly burden coworkers who had nothing to do with management’s decisions?
