“You Promised Me!” Woman Has Meltdown After Man Buys Meat Products

A routine trip to the grocery store turned into a terrifying public confrontation for one man.

While shopping for bone broth in the soup aisle, he was cornered and harassed by a woman who seemed to be suffering from a severe mental health crisis. She repeatedly screamed that he had “promised” her he wouldn’t eat meat, creating a massive scene that drew a crowd of onlookers.

Overwhelmed and cornered, the man snapped, cursing her out to make her stop. Now, he’s worried the public backlash makes him the [jerk], even though he was the victim of harassment.

Now, read the full story:

"You Promised Me!" Woman Has Meltdown After Man Buys Meat Products
Not the actual photo

AITA for clapping back on a woman who turned out to be deranged after she made a huge scene on me buying meat products in a grocery store?

On Sunday afternoon I was shopping at the grocery store around the corner from my house.

I don't want to say the name because I'm worried about this getting on social media and I'm almost positive I saw people filming with their phones

(also posting from a one time use account for that reason), but it's a national chain that's focus is affordable health food.

Think whole foods with bigger variety and way cheaper prices.

Because of this, I know a lot of vegans and vegetarians shop there but this place has a full butcher shop, fish place and deli counter.

It has vegan products but is not vegan to put it succinctly.

I was in the soup aisle and I was checking out the bone broth when I hear something from behind me.

Thinking back I THINK she said something like "you shouldn't eat that, it's murder." But I honestly didn't hear her so I turned around and said "thank you."

This is all such a blur please don't quote me on any of this, it's just the best of my recollection.

Her: "your body will THANK YOU, as will all the animals.". Me: really confused "thank you."

I set the box of broth I was looking at down and found a store brand that was much cheaper and put in my basket.

Her: "wait, I thought you weren't buying that?". Me: "excuse me?". Her: "you agreed that meat was murder.".

Me: "no I'm sorry, I eat meat.". This is where I start to think something was really, really wrong with her.

Her: "you PROMISED me, you PROMISED me! No more animals will have to die. YOU PROMISED me."

I just slowly turned away from her and went into the next aisle. She turned the other way so I figured I was done with her.

Instead she looped around and met me coming the other way in the aisle I was in and kept screaming "you PROMISED. you PROMISED!"

and at this point she was in full tears, her face was red and now people sort of had us boxed in on both ends watching the "show."

I was livid at this point so I said (and this I can quote) "look you stupid [jerk], I didn't promise anything. leave me the [heck] alone."

And with using that word I think I turned the crowd from being somewhat sympathetic in me dealing with the crazy person to me being an extreme [jerk] who was...

She collapsed in a heap and I tried to excuse myself through the 4/5 people at the end of the aisle.

I was shaking because I don't enjoy confrontation and I just set my basket down and went to the Safeway down the street but was a bundle of nerves the...

And I'm still dealing with it. I have no idea what came of the woman.

The look on those people's faces is haunting me (and i'm PRAYING this doesn't end up on youtube) and I feel awful for what I did. Am I the [jerk]?

This situation is a perfect storm of public anxiety, confrontation, and misplaced judgment. The OP was subjected to aggressive, bizarre harassment in a public space, and his reaction was one of panic and self-defense.

When someone is cornered and screamed at, especially by a stranger, the brain often defaults to a fight-or-flight response. The OP’s use of a harsh word was an attempt to create immediate space and shut down the terrifying interaction, not an unprovoked attack.

The tragedy here is the “bystander effect” combined with the public’s quick judgment. The crowd watched the spectacle, but when the OP finally reacted defensively, he became the villain in their eyes, simply because he used a swear word.

The OP described feeling “shaking” and “a bundle of nerves,” which are classic signs of a nervous system overwhelmed by conflict. Being physically cornered and verbally assaulted by a stranger is a traumatic experience that triggers acute stress.

The OP was essentially dealing with a public health crisis (the woman’s apparent mental illness) while trying to complete a mundane task. His frustration was entirely justified.

The real villains in this scenario are the passive bystanders who stood there filming instead of intervening. The “bystander effect” is a psychological phenomenon where individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim when other people are present. They assume someone else will step in.

In this case, the crowd chose to treat the incident as entertainment rather than a crisis. As Dr. Robert Cialdini, a social psychologist, notes, “When people are uncertain, they look to others for cues. If everyone else is just watching, the individual concludes that no action is necessary.”

The OP’s defensive outburst was a reaction to both the harasser and the overwhelming pressure of the silent, judging crowd. He was trying to escape a situation that had become physically and emotionally threatening.

Check out how the community responded:

The vast majority of Redditors ruled NTA, acknowledging that the OP was harassed and that his reaction was understandable given the stress.

ohhannahno - NTA. She was harassing you and you got out of there. Maybe it wasn’t the best choice to call her a [jerk], but she boxed you in and...

oldcoldandbold - Not the [jerk]. Are you okay? Regardless of the other person’s mental state, being accosted like that can be very nerve wracking and it sounds like you reacted...

turandokht - NTA. She's nuts. Hopefully if someone filmed it and put it up they blurred out your face. What a psycho.

KyutiePie - NTA. That sounds like an extremely stressful situation, and if you already hate confrontation to begin with, it seems like your brain was just overwhelmed and trying to...

Several commenters emphasized that mental illness does not excuse aggressive, harassing behavior.

oldcoldandbold - Pete Davidson recently said mental health isn’t an excuse to be an [jerk].

Loudly and emotionally berating someone for their grocery and dietary choices is an [jerk] move. What you did? Self-protecting.

[Reddit User] - NTA one bit. Sorry you had to deal with this spectacle. Have yourself a giant steak & glass of wine! 🥩 🥩 🥩

[Reddit User] - NTA. I don't generally like that word, but mentally deranged or not, she definitely deserved to be told off.

I'm not going to call you the [jerk] simply for using that word even if I do think you shouldn't have said it. I hope you're ok first and foremost...

A few vegans even stepped in to distance themselves from the woman’s extreme behavior.

Skinnybet - I’m vegan. She is using being a vegan as a excuse to berate and bully others. She gives all vegans a bad name.

You are very patient. Not the [jerk]. Even if you had hit her with a leg of lamb you’re not the [jerk].

Devilsfan118 - NTA, obviously. I would've been way more harsh. The vegan coalition found your post.

The OP was a victim of harassment and public spectacle. While his choice of words was harsh, it was a desperate attempt to regain control and escape a terrifying situation. The people who judged him should have been intervening to help, not filming his distress.

The real lesson here is that sometimes, the only way to stop a public freakout is to create one of your own.

If you had been cornered in that aisle, how would you have reacted?
