Young Mom Says Motherhood “Ruined” Her Life, Then Reddit Spots a Much Bigger Problem

Motherhood is often described as beautiful, meaningful, and deeply fulfilling. But for some women, the reality can feel far more complicated, especially when exhaustion, identity loss, and constant responsibility replace the life they thought they were building.

OP, a young mother in her early twenties, says becoming a parent changed everything about how she sees herself. After a difficult birth and months of postpartum struggles, she began feeling trapped in a routine that left little room for privacy, ambition, or even basic rest.

When she tried to talk about those feelings with the people closest to her, the response was not what she hoped for. She also found herself fighting to be taken seriously when asking for permanent birth control. What followed was an painfully honest account of regret, burnout, and the quiet grief of losing the person she used to be. Read on to see what she shared.

A young mother admits motherhood erased her sense of self and left her struggling to get through each day

'Becoming a mom ruined my life'

Being a mom sucks

If I could turn back time and not meet my current partner I would do it. I’d give my left lung to not be a mother.

At five months postpartum I asked my gp to refer me to a gynaecologist to get my tubes tied.

We had a horrible roundabout conversation about how I’m not making a decision from exhaustion, pain or anxiety.

I asked for a medical service to be provided to me so why do I have to convince a psychiatrist that I’m emotionally stable enough to get my tubes tied.

The conversation was so awful for me because it felt like she was about to ask me to get permission from my partner to get MY tubes tied.

Having a baby is awful. The contractions, the epidural, the stitches and the never ending exhaustion that comes after.

The moment I popped my baby out was the moment I stopped being me.

I’m in my very early twenties and I was just beginning to figure out who I am and all that internal work went down the drain in the space of...

I have no ambition whatsoever. I have lost my sense of self. The only thing I can do is get through the day.

And that is becoming more challenging day by day because why am I fighting for a life I do not want.

Becoming a mother is the worst thing that happened to me, mentally, physically and psychologically.

There are some parts of me that I will never reclaim no matter how hard I try.

I’m lost and I’m not sure I want to find my way or dig myself out of the hole I’m in.

I had post partum depression and anxiety and till today I still check if my toddler is breathing while she’s asleep.

During my postpartum depression tenure, I opened up to my mother and my partner, both said I was lazy and needed to go outside and touch some grass.

I hate motherhood and becoming a family. I hate that I have to make dinner, clean the house, take note of what we need, maintain our social calendar etc..

This isn’t the life I wanted for myself, I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy.

I wake up everyday and I’m living in my nightmare, I have officially become the worst version of myself while pretending to be the best I’ve ever been.

The greatest loss of all is losing my privacy. I could mess up privately, cry about it and fix it myself.

These days I cry during naptime and after bedtime at 7pm. I can’t even go to the toilet by myself because my kid is walking and opening doors.

I had the dignity of messing up and not having to involve everyone in it because it only affected me.

Now if I mess up I have to tell all the relevant parties and get an earful about what I should’ve done.

I’ve lost my zest for life. The passion I had to do something and be someone, now all I want to do is get through the day.

Life is not worth living and hasn’t been since I had a kid.. Motherhood sucks, it’s terrible, horrible, no good. I genuinely hate it here.

Edit; spoke to my gp yesterday and got on setraline! I know it will take a while but I’m hopeful. Thank you for all your responses!

Sometimes becoming a parent does not feel like gaining a new identity. It feels like losing the old one. That loss can be difficult to admit because motherhood is often presented as something women should naturally find fulfilling.

For this young mother, however, the experience has involved physical pain, exhaustion, anxiety, resentment, isolation, and the frightening sense that the person she used to be has disappeared.

Her words sound much deeper than ordinary frustration with sleepless nights. She describes having no ambition, crying when her child is asleep, feeling trapped by constant responsibility, checking whether her toddler is breathing, and saying that life no longer feels worth living. She had also previously experienced postpartum depression and anxiety.

Those details matter because they suggest that her hatred of motherhood cannot be separated neatly from significant psychological distress. Just as importantly, when she tried to explain that distress to the people closest to her, she says she was dismissed as lazy rather than supported.

There is another perspective here that deserves attention. She may genuinely dislike motherhood, and treatment does not have to convince her that parenting is secretly wonderful. Mental-health care can help someone suffer less without invalidating their judgment about what kind of life they would have preferred.

The goal should not be to force gratitude. It should be to help her regain enough stability, autonomy, and energy to determine which feelings belong to depression, which come from an overwhelming division of labor, and which reflect her authentic feelings about parenthood.

The National Institute of Mental Health explains that perinatal depression can involve persistent sadness, anxiety, fatigue, difficulty carrying out everyday tasks, hopelessness, and thoughts of death or self-harm. It emphasizes that the condition is medical and treatable rather than a personal failure.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists similarly describes postpartum depression as intense sadness, anxiety, or despair that interferes with daily functioning and notes that effective treatments can include therapy and medication. The NHS also lists antidepressants and talking therapies among established treatments for postnatal depression.

That context makes her update about starting sertraline significant. Seeking treatment is not evidence that every problem she described exists only in her mind.

Medication cannot redistribute housework, restore privacy, or make an unsupportive partner suddenly participate more. What treatment can potentially do is reduce enough depression and anxiety for those practical problems to become easier to identify and address.

Her household responsibilities also deserve scrutiny. Cooking, cleaning, managing supplies, organizing social commitments, and caring for a toddler represent substantial ongoing labor. If one parent carries most of that responsibility, simply telling them to “go outside” misses the structural problem entirely.

The most realistic way forward is therefore broader than medication alone: continued medical follow-up, appropriate psychological support, substantially more practical help, protected time away from caregiving, and a fairer division of household responsibilities.

Because statements about life not being worth living can indicate serious depression, they should also be discussed directly with a healthcare professional rather than minimized.

A mother does not need to pretend that motherhood completed her. Right now, the more important goal is helping her become a person again, rather than demanding that she become better at disappearing into the role.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters believed the PPD may still be ongoing and encouraged professional treatment

graybae94 − This is PPD. Why do you feel it’s a past tense thing? You need to talk to a dr and get treatment.

Mental health issues more often than not do not just go away on their own, you need help.

Motherhood is very hard, but the second you feel your soul sucked out of you and like you can’t cope with it you need outside help.

I’m on medication, I have daily self care routines I have to stick to without exceptions or else I immediately feel like I’m going to fall apart.

Draiscor93 − As others have said, it doesn't sound like you're past that PPD. You need some assistance with getting through that,

and I'm sorry that your partner and mother haven't been as supportive as they should be.

As for your GP wanting to make sure you're making the decision to have your tubes tied for the right reasons.

That's responsible medical practice, as it's an irreversible procedure, and they've likely noticed that you are still suffering with PPD,

even if you think you're past it.

Your first step needs to be speaking to a therapist specialising in PPD, and work through your thoughts and feelings around motherhood.

If you still want your tubes tied after working through your PPD, then that is entirely your choice. Edit: typos

frog_ladee − It feels like this is your life forevermore. But this is *temporary. * I promise! It’s overwhelming. It’s exhausting. But it will not last.

I’m on the other side of it. It sounds like your PPD is not gone. Treatment can bring you relief.

You’ve done the right thing to reach out to people here. Now reach out to your doctor, and let them help you.

Numerous_Map1629 − the way doctors won't let u make decisions abt your own body

but will absolutely let you be responsible for a whole human is actually insane now that i think about it

These Redditors argued the partner needs to contribute far more to household and parenting duties

ShimmeringNothing − Why are you the one who has to make dinner, clean the house, manage the to-do list?

Why is your partner calling you lazy? Why are you sidelined in your own medical care? Why do you get criticized constantly

("get an earful about what I should’ve done")? People here are saying PPD but this sounds like a rational reaction to an unfair situation to me.

im-dramatic − Sounds like your partner needs to be helping more.

I agree with the other comments on depression but it also sounds like you’ve fallen into the womanly duties role.

This happens a lot even when couples say they won’t let it happen. You need to reexamine your roles and discuss what is fair.

p0psicle − Just a gentle reminder that being a mother is not "cleaning the house, taking note of what we need, maintaining our social calendar".

Your partner can, and should, be stepping up with these tasks because motherhood itself is draining without these extras that we feel pressured to take on.

Ok-Examination4593 − I think your mental state would be better if your partner and your mother would help you and not act like two assholes.

Sorry ❤️ You will get through this!

These commenters explored regret, expectations of parenthood, and the difficulty of adjusting to motherhood

binghamjasper − I'm so sorry - I hope your life gets better as your child gets older.

Genuine question what was your expectation of motherhood before you had your baby?

Particular-Peanut-34 − I was on the fence about having kids with my ex husband

but he wanted a kid and I gave him one and then he cheated, it royally f**ked me up.

I didn’t even last the whole pregnancy because I hated being pregnant and I kept mourning my old life.

When we separated, he asked for 50/50 custody and I jumped for joy cause that meant I get half the month to myself.

I considered giving him full custody but my family threatened to cut me off so…

I was severely depressed for a while. Zoloft didn’t help, but I was in therapy for a bit, only worked for the surface level stuff.

I bought a something to off myself but a friend took it from me after finding out.

I think divorce and having an infant drove me insane, especially since I didn’t want kids (at that time or ever)

my ex kept flip flopping between yes kids no kids, I was on the no kids side My kid just turned 4.

It’s easier to manage as he gets older and more independent, but I’m still coping with the loss.

I use my spare time to pursue my hobbies and rest, but it never feels like enough time, and geographically I’m tethered to a s__tty area

cause it feels like I always have to cater to his dad. I countdown the years.

14 more 🥲 It’s really amplified my stance on being one and done. Like hell if I’m going to start over.

I love my kid but I hate the job, never again lol Some people end up growing to like parenthood and some people like myself never seem to, and that’s...

As long as the kid is taken care of. It’s also okay to voice regret about it without shame. My family doesn’t hear the end of it

Was motherhood itself the source of her misery, or had depression and an unfair division of labor made an already difficult transition unbearable? Can parents openly admit regret without being treated as though they do not love their children?
