Last November, Universal Pictures announced a sixth Bourne movie, directed by Edward Berger of “All Quiet on the Western Front” fame.

Key Takeaways:

  • Matt Damon applauds ‘fantastic’ new director for Jason Bourne.
  • Damon is always the first choice of Universal for the project.
  • Damon shares his thoughts in a full interview on “The Late Show”.

Fans eagerly awaited news on whether Matt Damon would reprise his role in the action-packed franchise, which has grossed $1.6 billion worldwide, with Damon last seen in “Jason Bourne” in 2016.

Matt Damon, who has portrayed the iconic CIA assassin since the franchise’s beginning, was likely to be asked to return to his role as Bourne a few months ago.

Fans across the globe love the Bourne series and would love to see a new movie every year. They’re also hoping for Matt Damon’s return in Bourne 6.

During a recent interview on “The Late Show,” Damon didn’t confirm his involvement in the new Bourne movie when asked by host Stephen Colbert.

However, he spoke highly of director Edward Berger, expressing optimism about the project. Berger’s acclaimed work on “All Quiet on the Western Front” earned him nine Oscar nominations and several wins.

Damon stated, “There is a great director named Edward Berger. [‘All Quiet on the Western Front’] is a fantastic film, and he’s wonderful, and he said he had an idea [for Bourne]. I would love to work with him, so he’s working on it. Look, I’m as anxious as you are to see if this thing [happens] — I hope it’s great and that we can do it.”

“At a certain point, somebody is going to need to take it over,” Damon added, hinting at the franchise’s future. “I’m not getting any younger.”

Sources close to the project clarified that the new Bourne movie was still in early development last November. With no script or screenwriter attached, it remained uncertain if Damon, Renner, or both would return.

As of now, the project is in development, and Damon is always the first choice of Universal. While Damon knows he could be replaced eventually, the studio wants to keep him as the main face of the franchise.

If the new Bourne movie goes ahead, Berger will become part of a respected group of directors who have contributed to the franchise.

Regarding Berger, his film “All Quiet on the Western Front” received nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won for Score, Cinematography, and Production Design.

Additionally, it secured seven BAFTA wins, including Best Film Not In The English Language and Best Director.

Right now, there’s not much information available about the project. Watch Damon’s full interview on “The Late Show” below.
