There’s a point in some relationships where love starts to feel tangled with responsibility, and it becomes hard to separate devotion from exhaustion. When one partner begins to struggle in ways that affect every part of daily life, the other can be left questioning how much they are meant to endure.

That’s where this woman finds herself after years of watching her husband change in ways she never expected. What started as concern slowly turned into frustration, and eventually led to a decision that shocked him and angered his family. Now she’s turning to others for perspective. Scroll down to see how it all unfolded.

A woman considers leaving her husband as his drastic weight gain changes everything

AITAH for divorcing my husband because he’s extremely overweight?

I (27F) have a (34M) husband. We got married 6 years ago and we were together for 3 years prior to that.

When we first met, he was very fit and quite the gym rat. However, since our wedding,

he has gained over 225 pounds and is still adding to that number. He is not the man I fell in love with.

Every day when I come home from work, the kitchen is trashed. He can't clean up for himself anymore

and needs assistance with many daily tasks. It hurts to see how much he has lost himself.

And honestly, I’m getting quite tired. I didn’t sign up for this! It’s like I’m working 2 jobs.

Last week, when I served him divorce papers, he blew up on me. He said how I could do this to him,

and accused me of being fat-phobic. Since then, his entire side of the family has been harassing me nonstop.

They've been telling everyone I know that I’m a terrible person and it’s really starting to get to me. So, AITAH?

At the core of many relationships is a quiet hope: that change won’t come at the cost of partnership. But when mutual support fades and one person begins carrying the weight alone, the relationship can start to feel less like a shared life and more like endurance.

In this situation, the OP isn’t just reacting to her husband’s weight gain; she’s responding to a shift in roles. What was once a partnership now resembles caregiving. Coming home to a constant mess, increased dependence, and emotional strain suggests she is no longer sharing life with an equal, but managing daily responsibilities for two.

That kind of imbalance can create deep exhaustion and resentment, even when love hasn’t fully disappeared. At the same time, her husband’s anger and accusations may stem from shame or a loss of control. When people feel they are falling short, it’s common to deflect that pain outward rather than confront it directly.

A different perspective emerges when we separate appearance from agency. While many might focus on physical changes, the deeper issue may be about participation. For many partners, connection is sustained not just by attraction but by shared effort, contributing to the household, maintaining routines, and showing up for each other.

From this angle, the OP may not be rejecting her husband’s body, but grieving the loss of the version of him who was engaged and self-sufficient. Meanwhile, from his perspective, her decision may feel like abandonment during a vulnerable period, intensifying feelings of rejection and defensiveness.

Psychological research helps explain why this dynamic becomes so overwhelming. According to Medical News Today, caregiver burnout is a state of emotional and physical exhaustion that arises when someone takes on prolonged responsibility for another person’s needs, often leading to fatigue, stress, and withdrawal.

Similarly, Psychology Today notes that burnout is closely tied to chronic, unequal emotional labor, where one person consistently gives more than they receive, which can erode both well-being and relationship satisfaction. These patterns are not about a lack of effort or compassion, but about the limits of what one person can sustainably carry.

Seen through this lens, the OP’s decision reflects not just frustration, but capacity. When someone begins to lose themselves in the role of caretaker, they may also lose their sense of partnership. Her choice to leave may not be about judgment, but about recognizing that she can no longer continue without harming her own well-being.

This situation sits in a difficult gray area. It’s possible to acknowledge her husband’s struggle while also recognizing her limits. Relationships require care, but they also require two people who are able and willing to participate. When that balance disappears, the hardest realization is that staying can sometimes do more damage than letting go.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These Redditors agreed that something serious is wrong and he needs medical help

SpecialK022 − Something greater is going on. He needs a physical and psychological evaluation.

NerdWoman1701 − Being considered super fat myself and knowing many others who are,

we can move, run, clean, shower, and live a normal life. That doesn’t sound like what is happening here,

something is very wrong, and if he isn’t open to figuring out what it is or acknowledging it,

then I don’t think there is anything wrong with walking away.

He has to figure it out for himself and if he isn’t willing,

then it’s time to figure out how to take care of himself as he is or reverse it.

[Reddit User] − I mean … everyone gains weight here and there. But 225 pounds!?

That’s a mental illness or other medical issue… he needs to see a doctor.

This group argued others fear the burden and OP shouldn’t become caretaker

Toyotafan123 − NTA Sounds like his family don’t want to take care of him either.

BeachinLife1 − NTA, They are flipping out on you because they know he's about to become THEIR burden.

Substantial-Air3395 − NTA - you're already getting a view into your future as his nurse. You're doing the right thing.

These users backed OP, saying change requires effort and he must take responsibility

Z0FF − NTA. People change and sometimes it’s for the worse.

If you’re unhappy and he has made no effort to change you need to look out for yourself.

“Fat-phobic” is such a trendy way to deflect these days.

Imagine watching a loved one slowly k__l themselves by any other means and people justifying it.

demyen96 − I got fat and lazy in a relationship and the breakup made me back into the man I wanted to be.

Let him figure it out he'll be alright. Sometimes people need that to kick them in the ass

OctoWings13 − NTA. Dude needs to pull his weight lol

These commenters stressed communication and fairness before judging or leaving

Several_Leather_9500 − If you haven't talked to him about your concerns and dropped divorce papers out of no where, then YTA.

If you've told him how you feel and he's unwilling to compromise, then NTA.

CakePhool − Does he work? What does he bring to the household? Or do you have to do all the stuff in the marriage?

[Reddit User] − NTA. But has there been any conversation? Heart to heart? Doctors appts? Therapy? Anything?

In the end, this situation left readers torn between empathy and realism. Many sympathized with the husband’s possible struggles, but just as many understood the wife’s exhaustion and need for a life that didn’t feel like constant caretaking.

Relationships evolve, but when the balance tips too far, tough decisions follow. Do you think walking away was justified, or should she have stayed and pushed harder for change? How much responsibility does one partner really carry when the other stops showing up? Share your thoughts, this one’s bound to spark debate.
