High School Senior Got Lectured About Marriage, So He Delivered The Pettiest Revenge

A high school senior was happily talking with classmates about becoming a father when a substitute teacher overheard the conversation and decided to weigh in. What began as casual chatter soon turned into an unsolicited lecture about marriage, complete with religious arguments and public criticism that left the student feeling cornered in front of his peers.

The substitute eventually gave up on the discussion and turned on a classroom TV to keep everyone quiet. Unfortunately for her, one tech-savvy student had already discovered a rather entertaining way to control it. Want to see how this classroom showdown played out? Read the original story below!

A substitute teacher’s comments about marriage inspired one student to get creative with classroom technology

'Substitute teacher sticks her nose (and religion) where it doesn't belong'

Back in 2007, I (37m) was a high school senior. I had recently found out I was to be a father. Most would be scared, I was thrilled.

I've always known I wanted kids and though my ex found out, or at least told me, a few days after we broke up, I was ready.

One day, my History teacher was out and one that we were familiar with, we'll call her Ms. Thumper (as in Bible).

Ms. Thumper had split us into groups to do some work and we were permitted to speak quietly amongst ourselves quietly when finished.

My friend and I began discussing the baby (which turned out not to be mine, but that's a whole other story) and the rest of the girls in the group...

As we were next to her desk, Ms. Thumper heard and joined the conversation.

Quickly, however, Ms. Thumper began asking about when we were going to marry.

Now, I was raised that staying with someone you don't have feelings for because a child is involved, only ends in hurting everyone.

I stated that I would be raising my daughter, however, we wouldn't be getting married. We were already broken up and that wasn't changing.

Now I don't remember the exact words, but she began berating me using Christianity as the argument as to why it was my duty to marry her.

I grew up in nowhere WV. I stood my ground that we would not be getting back together, and turned back to my group. She continued.

Eventually, my friend, seeing my discomfort, told her she needed to b__t out. I'd stood my ground and she needed to respect that.

Ms. Thumper got very angry and made all the groups split up and turned on the TV, insisting no one speaks.

This, to us, felt like an attack, so I decided to get some oh so satisfying petty revenge.

You see, I was that geeky kid that brought his laptop for notes. At that time, I had a Dell Axiom pocket PC with an infrared receiver/emitter.

A few days earlier, I had shown the normal teacher how I could use it as a programmable remote using the learning function.

She gets everything set up, sits down, and I pull up the app. TV goes off. She's confused, and gets up to turn it back on.

I let her sit back down and turn it back off. She gets to to turn it on, I let her sit back down and turn it off.

She gets back up and I time it so when she reaches for the power button, I turn it on and she turns it off.

I do these type of things making it as difficult as possible while keeping that it was me secret.

This went on until she decided the TV was damaged, and having nothing else planned,

she allowed us to sit and work on whatever we wanted for the rest of class.

Next day, I explained to the normal teacher what had happened, and why, as I didn't want her to think her TV was damaged.

She ended up giving me 3 days lunch detention (which I actually enjoyed).

Few things make people feel more defensive than having deeply personal life choices judged by someone who was never invited into the conversation.

Advice can be helpful when it is requested, but when it becomes moral condemnation, people often stop hearing the message and start protecting their dignity. Respecting personal boundaries is especially important when emotions are already running high.

In this situation, the student was processing life-changing news. Believing he was about to become a father, he had already accepted responsibility for raising the child despite no longer being in a relationship with the child’s mother.

What began as a private conversation with friends changed when the substitute teacher inserted herself into the discussion and shifted it from practical questions to religious expectations about marriage.

Rather than accepting his answer, she continued challenging his decision after he had clearly stated his position. By that point, the disagreement was no longer about parenting or marriage, it had become a question of whether a student had the right to maintain personal boundaries with an authority figure in a classroom.

A different psychological perspective is that this story is less about religion than about power. Teachers naturally hold authority over students, and that authority can unintentionally make personal opinions feel like obligations.

When someone in a position of power repeatedly presses a private issue, the other person may feel trapped because openly disengaging carries social or disciplinary risks.

The remote-control prank that followed was immature, but it also reflected a teenager’s attempt to regain a sense of control after feeling publicly cornered. Adolescents often respond to perceived unfairness through indirect resistance because direct confrontation feels unsafe or ineffective.

Psychologist Dr. Diana Baumrind, whose research on authority and child development has influenced education for decades, argued that effective authority balances guidance with respect rather than relying on coercion or moral pressure. Students are more receptive when adults encourage thoughtful discussion instead of demanding agreement.

The American Psychological Association likewise emphasizes that respectful learning environments require sensitivity to students’ diverse backgrounds and beliefs, allowing personal values to be discussed without imposing them.

Viewed through that lens, both parts of the story deserve consideration. The substitute teacher appears to have crossed a professional boundary by continuing to criticize a student’s personal decision after he had attempted to end the conversation.

At the same time, deliberately disrupting the class with the television prank was unlikely to solve the underlying problem. It may have provided a satisfying moment of revenge, but it also affected everyone else in the room and resulted in consequences that the student himself later accepted.

The strongest lesson is not that witty retaliation is the best response to unwanted judgment. It is that authority carries responsibility. Whether in a classroom, workplace, or family, people are far more likely to listen when they feel respected rather than pressured.

Honest disagreement can coexist with professionalism, but only when everyone recognizes where guidance ends and personal autonomy begins.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These Redditors shared similar stories about using remotes or tricks for petty revenge

CoderJoe1 − I bought a cheap key-chain remote control called TV-B-Gone years ago. I traveled all over the US for work so I found many uses for it.

Sitting in a crowded airport terminal directly under the noisy TV speaker?

Press and hold the remote button while it cycles through dozens of IR commands until the TV turns off.

I simply had to not be obvious about doing it.

Own_Statistician_757 − I had a crazy ass landlord ( I rented the original structure cottage she had built onto it and up 3 floors)

15 yrs back she “let me” have an extra cable box for $50 a month I know too much I didn’t wanna pay for the whole damn new line and...

Well then I met my now husband about half way into my lease and he actually just added cable to my place (yeah for less)

she was pissed because come to find out I was paying 90% off the standard bill she added extras for her cause again I’m paying the bill right.

Well I was trying extend my lease a couple months but because a cat was now there (bf’s) she wanted a $500 non refundable deposit,

now I had fostered several dogs short term my entire lease without an issue and the cat was immaculate no mess no issues.

BF went thru roof I countered no id go with $250 I figured that was fair as they just kinda moved right in and all.

But she said nope, okay no problem well there was but whatever, I did however remember I still had a remote for her cable.

Sometimes, even our remote worked and I’d change channels or like this guy turn tv off on her for a good 30 minutes.

You could tell when she got frustrated she’d stop changing from her show I’d hear her leave.

Loved it! She was a crazy b__ch came in apartment all the time when wasn’t there.

Always turning off my dryer when I’d do laundry and leave for work I’d come home to damp or wet clothes

when I told her issues with dryer instead telling me to not leave dryer on unattended

she tried to educate me on how older dryers work and maybe I’m not closing the door well enough or putting too much in!

Found out cause her roommate was super sweet and we wound up on same bus a few times. Damn B__ch!

So much more oh great one finding my mail key and as she walked in to let so worker plug his tools into my kitchen outlet

then proceeded to leave said stranger from Craigslist unsupervised with my kitchen door unlocked and oh open!

Instead just placing my mailbox key on counter she put in decorative basket on my kitchen door? !

Efficient-Public-829 − Reminded me of Chemistry at school. The gas had to be switched on at a panel on the wall.

It alarmed if there was already a gas tap open somewhere in the classroom and wouldn’t allow gas to flow.

With this one teacher who was a royal pain (understandable given what decades of teaching idiots like us must have done to her)

we would wait until she was turning the key to turn the gas on and someone would turn on a tap.

It would alarm, while she turned the gas back off the tap would then be turned off by same pupil.

She would then go round every single tap in the room (around 30) and check it was off. Satisfied that they were off she would then turn the gas back...

lo and behold it would alarm again. This would be repeated for a good portion of the lesson. She never did figure it out, or didn’t care enough to tell...

Firm_League3222 − Used to do this in a bar with my phone, where this bartender was a POS. Think it was a galaxy S4 or S6 maybe, had infrared on.

This group questioned the teacher’s reaction and asked for more details about the story

wlake82 − Was the teacher at least amused?

W0nderingMe − She was going to punish the class by putting the TV on? Weird choice.

CoderJoe1 − Catered detention? Damn, you were so spoiled.

MizunoHawk − So how about that other story?

This commenter joked about feeling old after being reminded how long ago 2007 was

Kirkeee − OP, how dare you remind us all how long ago 2007 was? Get out.

This Redditor sympathized with OP’s past relationship and asked about their later family life

FortuneTellingBoobs − Sorry about the cheating (? ) gf having someone else's baby. Did you ever have kids of your own?

What do you think? Was the TV trick harmless payback, or should the student have handled the situation another way? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
