Author Refuses to Change Her Pen Name After Her Ex’s New Girlfriend Claims It Belongs to Her

Creating something successful can be exciting, but it can also come with a fear many people do not expect: losing control over who gets to know about it.

For some creators, the work they share with the world is still a private part of themselves.

A 21-year-old woman shared that her self-published novel became surprisingly popular in her home country under a pen name.

The anonymity allowed her to build a separate identity as a writer while keeping her personal life private.

Recently, an opportunity to expand the book into a larger series brought new possibilities, including helping pay for college.

However, an unexpected conflict with someone connected to her past has made her question whether she should change the name she built her career around.

Now, she is wondering if protecting her privacy makes her unreasonable. Scroll down to see what happened.

Young author faces pressure to abandon her carefully built pen name after her ex’s new girlfriend objects

not the actual photo

'Should I change my “pen name” so my exes new girlfriend won’t be uncomfortable?'

So I (21F) have a somewhat “successful” self published book that I

published under a fake name (I won’t be disclosing the books name nor my

name for privacy reasons).. The book is written in my native language and it

became somewhat popular in my home country.

Nothing too crazy, but I was recently approached by a publisher who is

interested in making my book a saga. This would give me enough money to

pay for my college tuition and could possibly open many doors for me.

The thing is, I’m terrified of the people around me finding out that I write (i

only told my parents because I had to explain my sudden income) so I have

a “fake” pen name that was created with an anagram of my real name.

My ex boyfriend knows I wrote the book (we were dating when I wrote it

and he was my “testing reader”) and, as luck would have it, has a new

girlfriend with the same name as the anagram (a common name, it’s just

not mine). Apparently he told her that I’m the writer and she’s been

uncomfortable with the fact that I’m using “her name”.

He asked me if I can change it since it’s just an e-book and “it’s not like I’m

big or anything”.

To be fair, I could. The book will go under MAJOR editing in order to be

republished and will receive a new cover, I could simply use my real name

and deal with the talk.. The problem? I don’t want to.

I created this whole persona in social medias and have a decent number of

followers who only knows the anagram. And most importantly, I simply

don’t want to deal with my real life and writer persona being merged. I like

the idea of no one knowing it’s me whenever I don’t want to and, in more

than one occasion, I’ve had the opportunity of talking to people about the

book without identifying myself.. So, what should I do? I really need some

advice and I can’t exactly ask the people around me.

(English is not my first language, nor the language i write in, so I apologize

in advance for any mistakes)

Edit: 1- It’s just the same first name, not the full thing. Someone said it’s

like “Jane Doe” and “Jane Smith” and that’s right.

2- I’m not talking to him, they’re both blocked everywhere after she

somehow got my number and decided to harass me. But we (me and him)

do go to the same college and attend the same classes, he just stopped me

on my way.

3- Sorry if I didn’t made this clear before, I’m afraid she’s going to tell

people if I don’t comply. I REALLY don’t want people knowing that I write,

even though there’s nothing “shameful” in the book, I just really value my

privacy and “anonymity”.

Privacy is one of the few things people cannot easily rebuild once it is taken away.

For many creators, a pen name is not just a marketing choice; it is a boundary between their public work and their private identity.

Choosing anonymity does not mean someone is ashamed of what they create.

Sometimes it simply means they want control over who gets access to different parts of their life.

The OP’s situation is not really about a name. It is about ownership of her identity and the space she created as a writer.

She spent years building a separate author persona, developing readers, and creating a place where she could express herself without feeling exposed.

The fact that her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend shares a similar name does not change the reason the pen name exists.

From the OP’s perspective, changing it would not only affect a digital label; it would erase a carefully built connection with readers and force her into a level of visibility she is not ready for.

A different perspective is that the girlfriend may genuinely feel uncomfortable seeing someone use a name she identifies with, especially after learning the connection through her boyfriend.

However, discomfort does not automatically create ownership. Names, especially common first names or variations, are shared by millions of people.

The girlfriend may feel awkward, but the OP did not choose the pen name to imitate her, target her, or gain attention from her identity.

This perspective shows why the OP’s desire for separation between her author life and personal life is understandable.

She is not hiding something harmful; she is protecting a creative identity that has brought her success and confidence.

The bigger concern is not the girlfriend’s feelings about the name but the possibility that someone else is trying to pressure the OP into giving up privacy because they are uncomfortable.

The OP does not owe anyone a change simply because they discovered a coincidence.

If the publisher opportunity grows, she can decide whether to continue using the pen name, reveal herself gradually, or create new boundaries around her public identity.

That choice should belong to her.

Being a writer is not only about producing stories.

It is also about deciding how much of yourself you are willing to give to the world.

A pen name can be a door that opens when the creator chooses, not a door that others get to force open.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters said the shared name was only a coincidence and OP should not change anything

strykoza − lots of people have the same name, she'll live

wizardasaurus − forget about him! this is your life! you had the name

before they started dating, why would you ever bend a knee to an ex?

Ok_Weakness_9834 − You don't want to ? You don't have to. Simple.

probably plenty other woman with that same name around the world, she's

not the center of the world. main character syndrom.

These Redditors viewed the girlfriend’s request as insecurity and unnecessary control

Homeboat199 − How ridiculous. Do not change your pen name for this

insecure k__cklehead.

DeniedAppeal1 − No. No no no no no! Do not tolerate this s__t for even a

second. This woman is literally using her name as an excuse to blow up your

job and she's only doing it because you're her boyfriend's ex. She's being manipulative.

Who_Your_Mommy − Why does this woman have any say in what you do?

Does she expect anyone that shares her name to change it because she's

uncomfortable? Your ex is your ex for a reason. His new girlfriend is none of

your concern. He never should have told her to begin with, but her feelings

are not your problem. This was your penname before they met.

It's a professional trademark. Congrats on your book deal!

little-germs − Bish is jealous. A normal person would say “huh, funny

coincidence”. Sounds like she’s a little obsessed with you.

These users emphasized that the pen name has professional value and changing it could hurt OP’s career

NandoDeColonoscopy − You say you could change it bc it's going through

edits, but your publisher may disagree. You got the deal for the saga bc

your self-published work did well, so part of your value to them is that you

have an already established brand. Changing your name removes that

advantage. I think it would be a bad move professionally, if they'd even let you.

heheing − You created your anagram name, published and then your ex

went out and started dating someone with the same name as your

anagram name. Thats his problem to deal with, not yours

The situation comes down to privacy, ownership, and whether someone else’s discomfort should outweigh an author’s established identity.

The OP created a separate writing persona for personal reasons, built an audience around it, and now faces pressure to change it because someone shares the same first name.

While the coincidence may feel awkward, a common name does not automatically give someone control over another person’s pen name.

Do you think the OP should protect the identity that helped build their career, or would changing it be the kinder choice to avoid conflict?

How much say should someone have over a name they happen to share? Share your thoughts below.
