Adopted Deaf Daughter Learns Her Parents Moved Away Without Telling Her After Years of Silence

Being accepted into a family should mean being accepted exactly as you are.

For children with disabilities, support and understanding from the people closest to them can make all the difference.

Unfortunately, not every child receives the patience and care they deserve, even from those who chose to become their parents.

That is the heartbreaking experience shared by this Reddit user.

Adopted as a child with the expectation of having certain challenges, they grew up facing something their adoptive mother refused to accept: being profoundly deaf.

Instead of learning how to communicate with her child, she created rules that made everyday life much harder.

Years later, another painful discovery changed the way the poster viewed their relationship forever. Scroll down to read the full story.

Deaf adoptee reveals how her adoptive parents’ choices left her feeling abandoned

'EM tells me I can't use sign language at home because she won't learn it?'

So I've been told to share this. Not sure if anyone will be interested.

This is about my adoptive mother. My adoptive parents are British citizens who moved to my

country in the EU.

They adopted me actually expecting mental disabilities but I was just profoundly deaf. You

would think that would be easier.. So I grow up, I get enrolled in deaf schools where I learn

sign language.

But my mother decides it's too hard for her to learn sign language, and actually bans me

from using it in the house. I had to mime or point at things until I could start writing, upon

which I carried around a notebook everywhere. If I did try to sign, I was called disrespectful

for not including her in the conversation.

In a strange way, this made my written language skills very good, as well as my lip reading

skills, which many deaf people have challenges with.

It was very difficult and upsetting living with her. My adoptive father was nice but he just

listened to whatever she wanted, so he became a bad parent too.

I went to university and limited contacting them. The one time I tried to visit them for the

holidays, I returned to a house with a stranger family.. My adoptive parents had moved back

to Britain without telling me.. Who does that?

Every child deserves to communicate with the people who are supposed to love and protect them.

For deaf children, language is not simply a convenience, it is the primary way they build relationships, express emotions, ask for help, and develop a sense of belonging.

When access to that language is restricted, the consequences often reach far beyond communication itself.

What makes this story especially heartbreaking is that the greatest barrier was never the poster’s deafness.

It was the refusal of the primary caregiver to adapt.

The poster attended deaf schools, learned sign language, and found a community where communication was possible.

Yet at home, the very language that allowed meaningful connection was forbidden because one adult decided learning it was too difficult.

Instead of meeting the child’s needs, the responsibility for communication was placed entirely on the child, who relied on gestures, mime, and eventually a notebook simply to participate in everyday family life.

The later discovery that the adoptive parents had moved back to Britain without even informing their child reinforces a painful pattern: emotional distance had existed long before the physical distance ever did.

A perspective that deserves attention is that children naturally assume the way they are treated reflects their own worth.

When a parent refuses to learn the language that allows a child to communicate, the child may internalize the message that their needs are an inconvenience.

Yet the remarkable resilience shown in this story demonstrates the opposite.

The poster developed exceptional written communication and strong lip-reading skills, not because these were ideal circumstances, but because adaptation became necessary for survival.

Those accomplishments reflect determination and intelligence, not evidence that the original approach was acceptable.

Seen through that lens, the father’s role also deserves reflection.

Kindness alone is not always enough to protect a child.

Standing by while another caregiver repeatedly denies a child’s basic communication needs can unintentionally reinforce the harm.

Love is measured not only by affection but also by the willingness to advocate when someone vulnerable cannot advocate fully for themselves.

The lasting lesson is that disability does not diminish a child’s ability to connect with others—lack of access does.

Learning a child’s language is one of the most powerful ways a parent can say, “You belong here.”

The responsibility for building that bridge should never rest entirely on the child.

Despite years of isolation, the poster’s ability to build an independent life and reflect on these experiences with clarity speaks not to the success of the parenting they received, but to the extraordinary resilience they developed in spite of it.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These Redditors encouraged cutting ties, leaving the toxicity behind, and building a happier life

VeryC0mm0nName − "who does that? " Assholes, plain and simple. Honestly, if they're not

going to adjust for your need and inform you of important events (I. e. moving house), you're

better off without them. ..

Prometheus79 − What? F__k them. Cut all ties and live your own life. You are way better than them.

BrdsONAwire − Wow, I’m not the only person who experienced a parent moving without my

knowledge! I’m a little relieved. Several years ago on Mother’s Day weekend in the US, I went

to invite my mother to lunch the following day only to show up to an empty house. No

furniture, no car, no dog, no forwarding address.

I didn’t hear from her for 3 months after that and when I did she blamed me saying I was ‘too

busy’ with my two jobs to bother paying attention to what was going on in her life. I’ve been

no contact for almost 10 years now. Good luck in your future endeavors and I’m sorry you

also went through such a s__t experience.

We’re both better off just letting that toxicity just move on.

scrabbleking1966 − Well done you for overcoming the problems they put on you. And lucky

you that they have now gone out of your life. Enjoy the rest of your life.

This group condemned the adoptive parents as cruel, selfish, and entirely undeserving of the title “parents”

WallabyInTraining − Who does that? People who thought they had ordered a cute mentally

disabled (easily manipulated) fashion accessory? Imagine their surprise when you ended up

going to university. You know, just plain awful people. Sorry you didn't have the loving

parents you deserve, you didn't have a choice in that. I hope you can now surround yourself

with people who love you and treat you right.

<3

MusenUse_KC21 − I'm so sorry, that's horrible. I hope EM and her spineless husband can't

look at a mirror anymore without wincing.

depreavedindiference − I am literally shaking my head over this, this is the clearest definition

of WTF! !!! It is just so sad on so many levels, I am so sorry you had to live through that.

These commenters were appalled that the mother refused to learn sign language and denied her child basic communication

ATKgaming314 − As a deaf person myself, I can't believe EM just bans sign language in the

house just because it's too hard.

hcbrown5 − (Sign language interpreters here) Shockingly I have only met like 2% or hearing

parents who learned sign language to communicate with their Deaf child. Most do not sign

and refuse to learn, most of them is because the Dr tells them their child can be ‘hearing’ if

they only use hearing aids or Cochlear Implants, but this isn’t true either.

I mostly work with college and adult age Deaf people and they ALL share their frustration

with no one in their family learning sign language. Holidays are the worst for them. I have

always said this should be a felony for these hearing parents. Even at an elementary school I

sometimes sub at, every Monday the teacher starts the day with social hour.

..the kids have been isolated all weekend with no communication, they come into school with

their friends and teachers who are either Deaf or sign and they just go crazy socializing.

AngelusRex7 − You know, I despair for the British adults who not only not bother with

learning the language of the country they move to/visit, but to not even bother to learn a

tool that helps their child. I hope a certain British problem affects them severely.

This story left many readers stunned because the deepest betrayal wasn’t just the move, it was years of being denied a fundamental way to communicate.

While the poster developed remarkable resilience and strong written communication skills, most agreed those abilities came at an unfair emotional cost.

The parents’ decision to leave the country without even telling their adopted child only reinforced the distance that had existed all along.

What do you think? Is there any coming back from a childhood like this, or does some damage permanently change a parent-child relationship?
