MIL Accused Couple Of Keeping Away An Unborn Grandchild, Then Disappeared For A Year

Becoming grandparents is an exciting milestone for many families, but expectations do not always match reality. Sometimes people become so convinced that they are about to be pushed aside that they end up damaging the very relationship they are trying to protect.

That is the situation this Redditor found herself caught in while she was only a few months pregnant. During what seemed like an ordinary family game night, her fiancé’s parents suddenly accused the couple of planning to keep their future child away from them, despite there being no sign that this was ever the case.

The argument quickly escalated, leaving both families completely estranged before the baby had even arrived. Read on to find out how everything unraveled.

A minor misunderstanding became the foundation for a family conflict that seemed to exist largely in one person’s imagination

'My MIL accused me of keeping her from her grandchild before he was even born, and now she hasn't spoken to us in over a year'

Hi everyone, I've recently joined this community and wanted to share my experience with my MIL.

Back in March 2025, I was around 3 to 4 months pregnant with our son.

One evening, I was cat-sitting for my parents, so I wasn't present when this happened.

My fiancé had gone to his parents' house for a family game night.

A week before this, it had been Mother's Day.

My fiancé had messaged his mum asking what she was doing, and she told him she was going out for lunch with one of his sisters.

He assumed she already had plans and didn't want to intrude.

A week later, when he attended the family game night, he brought along a bottle of win and a Mother's Day card as a belated gift.

Instead of accepting it, my MIL became upset and told him how hurt she was that we hadn't been there for her on Mother's Day.

After my fiancé explained that he genuinely thought she was busy because of her lunch plans, the conversation escalated.

My MIL then shifted the topic entirely and accused us of excluding her from our unborn child's life. At this point, I was still pregnant.

She already has another grandchild through my fiancé's brother and his partner, who live in Ireland, while we live only five minutes away from my in-laws.

Despite this, she claimed that we were going to keep our son away from her as well.

She also accused me of stopping my fiancé from spending time with his family, which couldn't be further from the truth.

Anyone who knows me would laugh at the suggestion.

I've never tried to interfere with his relationship with his family, and I've always encouraged him to maintain those connections.

According to my fiancé, his mum had been drinking quite heavily that evening and was noticeably i__oxicated.

He tried to de-escalate the situation and suggested that they discuss everything another time

when emotions weren't running so high and alcohol wasn't involved.

That's when my FIL (my fiancé's stepfather) stood up and told him to "get the f**k out of my house".. My fiancé immediately got up and left.

Since that night, neither of them has spoken to us. There has been no apology, no attempt to resolve things, and no effort to meet our son.

Our little boy is now nearly 11 months old,

and they have completely missed out on his entire life so far because of assumptions they made before he was even born.

I still struggle to understand how a misunderstanding about Mother's Day turned into accusations

that we were excluding them from their grandchild's life, especially when no such plans ever existed.

It feels like they created a narrative in their heads and then punished us for it.

Has anyone else dealt with grandparents who essentially cut themselves off because they assumed they were going to be excluded?

Few experiences are more confusing than being blamed for something that has not even happened yet. When people become convinced that future rejection is inevitable, they sometimes begin reacting as though it has already occurred. The result is a painful paradox: in trying to protect themselves from imagined hurt, they create the very distance they feared.

This story is especially heartbreaking because the conflict began before the child was even born, leaving an entire family grieving relationships that never had the chance to develop.

From a third-person perspective, the OP and her fiancé appear to have been responding to a misunderstanding, while the fiancé’s mother was responding to a story she had already accepted as true. The Mother’s Day confusion seems to have acted as a trigger rather than the real issue.

Once emotions escalated, the conversation shifted from a missed celebration to accusations that the couple intended to keep their unborn son away from his grandparents. Those accusations were not supported by the couple’s behavior.

In fact, they lived nearby, encouraged family relationships, and attempted to calm the situation rather than inflame it. The decision to end the evening by ordering the fiancé to leave, followed by more than a year of silence, transformed a single emotional argument into a lasting family estrangement.

A different perspective is that the mother-in-law’s reaction may have been driven less by certainty than by fear. Becoming a grandparent often represents a major life transition, and many grandparents worry about losing closeness with their adult children once new families are formed.

Those anxieties can become magnified when alcohol lowers emotional restraint or when someone already feels overlooked. However, fear does not excuse accusations or emotional withdrawal.

One of the most striking aspects of this story is that the grandparents ultimately fulfilled their own prediction. They feared exclusion from their grandchild’s life, yet it was their decision to cut off communication that created exactly that outcome.

Psychologist Dr. Harriet Lerner, author of The Dance of Anger, explains that unresolved anxiety within families often leads people to react to imagined threats as though they are established facts.

She notes that when fear goes unspoken, individuals may become defensive, assign harmful motives to others, or distance themselves before genuine rejection occurs. Healthy relationships depend on checking assumptions through honest conversation rather than allowing emotional narratives to replace evidence.

That insight helps explain why this conflict proved so difficult to resolve. Once the mother-in-law became convinced she would be denied a relationship with her grandson, every event could be interpreted as supporting that belief, even an innocent misunderstanding about Mother’s Day.

The couple could not effectively defend themselves against an accusation based on something they had never intended to do. Without a willingness to question those assumptions, reconciliation became increasingly difficult as time passed.

Ultimately, this story is a reminder that relationships are rarely damaged by assumptions alone; they are damaged when assumptions replace communication. Grandparents, parents, and adult children all benefit from expressing fears before those fears harden into certainty.

The greatest tragedy here is not that a disagreement occurred, but that nearly a year of a child’s life has passed without anyone choosing to bridge the gap. Healing remains possible, but it can only begin when reality is allowed to speak louder than imagined rejection.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These Redditors said OP should accept the separation and enjoy the peace without toxic family drama

Fuzzy-Mushroom-1933 − So take the win and enjoy your life. She doesn’t want to be in your life? Great!

Powerful_Put_6977 − Do nothing. Be happy that these loopy-loops are not in your life or that of your son.

Enjoy the peace. It'll be hard on your husband but they are who they have the argument (in their heads) with, not you.

Don't reach out to them about anything. They played silly games and they have won silly prizes - they brought this on themselves, nobody else.

Own_Ship9373 − Your MIL is insane and I’m glad the trash took itself out. It sounds as though your in-laws really hate you.

I just can’t imagine a world in which grandparents would cut themselves off from their grandchild for no reason.

Maybe MIL has a toxic relationship with FIL, or maybe she has mental health issues.

Either way, you are better off without them in yours and your child’s life.

ManufacturerOld5501 − The trash took itself out, do not let it back in.

This group criticized the MIL’s behavior and believed she was creating her own victim narrative

Slw202 − She just wanted her victim origin story. Now she can tell everyone that it's your fault she hasn't seen her grandchild.

SuspiciousImpact2197 − To be honest here, congratulations on your “loss. ”

They both showed you who they are and had the decency (lol) to do it before they polluted your family with the new baby around.

I’m sure it’s causing your fiancé pain, and I am sorry about that. What exactly would he want to do differently?

‘Cause I ain’t seeing where either of YOU have any amends to make in this situation. Edited to fix my fumble finger “on. ”

PhotojournalistOnly − Love the part about you keeping him from his family of origin when he was literally at family game night. 🙃

These commenters pointed to possible alcoholism and emotional immaturity as reasons to keep distance

CeramicSavage − Take this as a blessing and never speak to them again.

She will eventually try but you don't want an a__oholic freaking out around your kid all the time.

eigenstien − It sounds like classic a__oholism.

This commenter also emphasized protecting the child from unhealthy family dynamics

cicadasinmyears − Honestly, if they’re that immature, do you really want to have to be involved with them/have them around your son?

I would love to know how she expected you to share your kid with her while he was still in utero;

the whole point is that they need to stay in for the full term so they don’t experience the many problems preemies can have.

It isn’t like you could just Star Trek transporter beam him out for a few hours while visiting and then put him back,

if she had even visited. I say you’re better off, and so is your son.

Adoptive neighbour-“grandparents” may wind up working out; if not, well, you’re all still going to be happier

without heaping servings of toxic behaviour in day to day lives. It’s a pity that she doesn’t recognize that she’s the cause of the whole mess.

Do you think the couple should leave the door open for an apology, or has missing the child’s entire first year already revealed everything they need to know?
