Woman Says Boyfriend “Jokingly” Slapped Her, Then His Next Move Left Reddit Horrified

People often dismiss harmful behavior by calling it “just a joke.” But when one partner repeatedly ignores clearly stated boundaries and then blames the other person for being upset, the issue is no longer about humor. It becomes a question of safety.

That is the painful realization facing this 37-year-old Redditor after her boyfriend suddenly slapped her across the face while she was tying her shoes. He immediately insisted it was playful, yet she says it was not the first time he had crossed physical boundaries she had explicitly asked him to respect.

Now she is struggling with the gap between what her heart wants and what her instincts are telling her. Scroll down to see why she asked Reddit for a reality check.

'Need reality check after being “jokingly” slapped in the face by my boyfriend - F37, M55?'

I need help seeing clearly after getting slapped in the face “as a joke” by my boyfriend.

I know what I SHOULD do but am having a hard time seeing clearly and making the final decision to leave.

I’ve been in a relationship for the past 6 months with a M/55, and I am a F/37.

The age gap has not been easy to explain to some friends and family, but in the beginning things were great.

Fast forward to now, I’m bending over tying my shoes getting ready to get in the car and leave,

and he’s slapping me hard in the face out of nowhere without consent “as a joke”.. I’m asking myself, “How did I get here?”

Over the last two months our communication has broken down and become toxic.

I have an anxious attachment style and he is an avoidant.

Our conflicts have gone from civil to completely chaotic, usually with intense yelling and him taking zero accountability

and gaslighting me into believing things didn’t happen the way they actually did (invaliding the truth).

A few days after our last explosive argument things were mostly back to normal, there was affection, flirting, and support on both sides until this event.

Today I was bending over tying my shoes, and he came up behind me in a playful and flirty manner.

He put his hands on my hips, then reached down and slapped me hard in the face.

It stung, and it stung for several minutes after the impact. I was horrified and hurt. He knew he had gone too far.

This is the third occurrence of this type of behavior, as something similar happened a few months prior, but did not go as far.

The first time he slapped my b__t very hard out of nowhere completely unprovoked.

That day I warned him don’t ever slap me in my face, my bottom was ok as a flirty joke but never my face,

as this was also sprung on me and caught me off guard.

The second time I was folding laundry on my bed, and he came up behind me, bent me over, pretended to dry hump me, and pulled my hair so hard...

I reacted poorly to this and made sure he knew this made me feel uncomfortable.

Today he pushed the boundary once again, but this time it has gone too far.

I am asking, why does he keep testing this boundary, and what are the consequences of allowing him to continue doing this or not leaving him?

I am certain I need to leave, but why am I having such a hard time justifying it?

My friends are telling me it only gets worse from here, and this is not just joking, flirty, fun.

After the slap tonight I immediately reacted in tears, and he stormed out of my house saying he was no longer going to take the abuse from me,

because he was joking and I was taking it all the wrong way and he is tired of walking on eggshells.

He is gone, I am safe, and now he is texting me saying that he loves me and he is so sorry, and it’s his being overworked driving this poor...

I need help understanding the seriousness of this, please.

I love his company and the attention, I think I’m addicted to the attachment, but my head is telling me to wake up and get out!!!

I just need to know I’m not overreacting and that this is serious.

Update: I’m relieved to say after a fair amount of love bombing, apologizing for hurting me,

blaming this again on work, and a few tears it is officially over and put to rest.

I am incredibly grateful for the support and the very personal stories some of you have shared in hopes of saving me from a horrible future.

I realize this man is dangerous and no good for me, and I am protecting and prioritizing my future self’s peace and safety.

Once again thank you for the tremendous amount of support and clarity, it has truly helped me see through the fog and lead me to safety.

The OP’s uncertainty is entirely understandable. During the first several months of the relationship, she experienced affection, companionship, and emotional closeness. That positive foundation made it much harder to reconcile the person she cared about with someone who repeatedly violated her physical boundaries.

The slap to the face did not occur in isolation. It followed earlier incidents in which he slapped her forcefully without warning, pulled her hair hard enough to cause pain, and ignored her explicit requests not to engage in that kind of physical behavior.

Each time she clearly communicated that the actions were unwanted. Each time the boundary was tested again. By the third incident, the pattern was no longer about misunderstanding what she enjoyed. It was about repeatedly doing something he already knew caused her distress.

His response afterward is equally important. Rather than immediately accepting responsibility, he reportedly accused her of “abusing” him by reacting emotionally, claimed she was taking the joke the wrong way, and said he was tired of “walking on eggshells.”

Only after leaving did he begin apologizing, expressing love, and attributing his behavior to work-related stress.

Those shifting explanations can be deeply disorienting because they encourage the injured partner to focus on understanding the aggressor instead of evaluating the behavior itself. The question subtly changes from “Was this acceptable?” to “Can I help him stop doing this?”

Research on intimate partner violence consistently shows that abusive relationships often involve recurring cycles of tension, harmful behavior, reconciliation, and temporary calm.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline notes that apologies, gifts, declarations of love, or blaming outside stressors frequently follow abusive incidents. These responses can feel sincere while still failing to address the underlying pattern of control and repeated boundary violations.

That framework helps explain why leaving felt emotionally difficult despite the seriousness of the incident. The OP was not simply evaluating one slap. She was grieving the relationship she believed she had while confronting evidence that the person she loved repeatedly ignored her consent.

Emotional attachment, hope for change, and memories of good times often coexist with fear and confusion. Those conflicting feelings do not mean the danger is imaginary. They are common reactions when someone experiences intermittent affection alongside increasingly harmful behavior.

The update is perhaps the most significant part of the story. Despite additional apologies, emotional displays, and attempts to explain his actions, the OP ultimately chose to end the relationship and prioritize her safety.

That decision reflects an important distinction between forgiveness and trust. A person may genuinely regret hurting someone, but repeated violations of clearly stated boundaries make future safety difficult to assume.

Ultimately, this situation was never just about a single slap presented as humor. It was about a pattern in which physical acts escalated, consent was repeatedly ignored, emotional reactions were dismissed, and responsibility shifted away from the person causing harm.

The OP was not overreacting by recognizing that pattern. Listening to the discomfort she had been trying to explain for months may well have protected her from a future in which those boundaries were tested even further.

The courage to leave did not erase the affection she once felt, but it allowed her to place her long-term safety above the hope that someone else might eventually change.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These Redditors urged OP to leave immediately, warning the abuse would only escalate

3_wheeler_of_doom − "That day I warned him don’t ever slap me in my face" so now he's done it to see

if you meant that him slapping you was not a joke, that was a__ault you know you need him gone, so do it now,

before the next 'joke' is a punch in the face he's not sorry he hit you, and he will do it again you are not overreacting

this is deadly serious please take your safety seriously and cut all contact with this man

Traeyze − My friends are telling me it only gets worse from here It's already true.

It has been a steady escalation since it started.

This is a classic trauma bond cycle, where he presses boundaries, escalates harm, then love bombs to get you to drop your guard.

Likely he will attempt that again, try to flirt and ply you with what you want to hear until you drop your guard and he pushes it again.

Eventually he will just stop with the love bombing entirely but it'll be too late by that point. He'll stop because he knows you will be too hobbled to escape.

Be real: the you of one year ago would be horrified seeing you in your current state.

The you of one year ago would never let anyone treat you this way. That's how much damage he has done already. This is scary.

Ok-Effective5132 − I’m sorry I didn’t read most of your post. The title really says it all.

Slapping is physical abuse. You’re old enough to recognize that for what it is.

I’m sorry you’ve gotten to this point with your emotional investment only for this to happen.

Any abuse he claims you’re doing doesn’t justify physical abuse in response. Get away from this man.

This group said the slap was never a joke but a deliberate test of OP’s boundaries

Norodia − You are asking why does he keep testing your boundaries?

If crossing a boundary has no consequences, then it isn't really a boundary. .. People who like you dont slap you

Spinnerofyarn − It wasn’t a joke. It was never a joke.

He said it was in the hopes that you wouldn’t be upset with him and that he would somehow get your approval for him to abuse you.

RubyTx − So, explain this to me. .. what was supposed to be the funny part of him doing the exact thing you told him never to do?

This wasn't joking. It was testing how far you would let him go. So, how far? I'm hoping you will choose you.

These commenters believed his claims of being the victim were classic abusive projection

i-love-taco-bell − He says you’re abusing him? He’s projecting. You need to leave. This could get very scary.

tryingtogrowup69 − “After the slap tonight I immediately reacted in tears,

and he stormed out of my house saying he was no longer going to take the abuse from me” this post is quite terrifying overall,

but this piece really solidifies it. this is a man in his 50s that physically harms you and is completely out of touch with reality.

the extent of his mindset makes me so much more scared for you. he’s the kind of abuser that will always see himself as a victim.

any domestic violence expert would tell you that this behavior is prone to escalate.

so many women that have experienced this are now dead. PLEASE run

These Redditors stressed that any physical violence is unacceptable, even once

Debrisof2020 − Once is too many.   Once is too many. Once is too many.

Once is too many. Once is too many.   Once is too many. Once is too many. Once is too many.

elgrn1 − Violence is never a joke

Do you think the boyfriend’s apology was sincere, or was it simply another step in a familiar cycle? At what point should repeated “jokes” stop being treated as jokes altogether? Share your thoughts below.
