Infidelity is often described as something that breaks trust. But for some people, the hardest part is not the affair itself. It is discovering actions that fundamentally change how they see the person they once loved.

That is where this Redditor finds himself seven months after learning his spouse had an affair with a close mutual friend. The betrayal alone was devastating, but he says what followed left him questioning her judgment, her values, and whether he could ever respect her again.

Even after moving out and beginning therapy, he admits the anger has not faded and wonders whether some relationships simply cannot recover from certain choices. Scroll down to see why he believes the affair permanently changed the way he views his spouse.

'My spouse cheated, and 7 months later I still feel like she is a piece of s__t?'

Back 7 months ago my spouse slept with a "good" friend of ours.

This was a man that was present at our baby shower, and whom we went to concerts with, and hiking trips.

This is also a man with a fiancé that he's been a piece of s__t towards for years now, but has always stated he would never leave his fiancé.

Just when I think I've typed the worst part of all of this, I remember the part that truly upsets me and has changed my entire world view on my...

We figured out she had HPV during routine doctors appointments, and i always assumed since I am a man that I have it as well.

We've both had a s__ual past and we can't determine who gave it to who, but we can move forward together. That was 3 years ago.

Fast forward 2.5 years, and she winds up needing surgery due to HPV complications. Only reason that matters is she was still positive.

Her tag team partner in the affair knew about this, and they agreed to not wear protection.

Willingly compromising himself with an STI he can't really get tested for accurately but is more than capable of passing along.

My spouse ends up with emotions for him, and falls down the actual path of a tricked side woman.

He tells her he does not have those feelings for her, and they decide to stay friends.

I found out and things did not go well. Nothing physical at all as I would never lay a hand on a lady,

but words were exchanged in the heat of the moment. I left. I moved out.

But my anger never left, and as I started therapy it started becoming more and more clear that he willingly possibly contracted HPV and is still with his fiancé.

His poor fiancé that needed to know so I messaged her. I told her all, and I've told her all every single time they continued to interact.

To remind her this man proudly and without consideration might

have just given you an STI from his side piece that could possibly cause cancer. He does not care for you.

It hit me, not only was I cheated on but also this person I spent so many years of my life with, someone I built a family with,

and thought I knew morally, was a culprit in this as well. She failed to respect the marriage, she failed to respect herself,

but worst of all she knowingly participated understanding completely

that he was not going to leave his fiancé more than likely and would probably have s__ with her.

We started couples therapy, and I think I've come to the conclusion I won't ever fully believe she isn't a piece of s__t.

Every betrayal leaves two wounds. One comes from what happened, while the other comes from realizing the person we trusted was capable of making choices we never believed they would make.

For many people, that second wound is the one that lasts the longest because it changes how they see love, loyalty, and even their own judgment. When trust collapses, grief often arrives disguised as anger, making it difficult to separate disappointment from the person who caused it.

In this situation, the husband is no longer wrestling only with the affair itself. What continues to haunt him is the moral meaning behind his wife’s decisions. The secrecy, the willingness to have unprotected sex despite knowing about an HPV infection, and the awareness that another unsuspecting partner could be harmed transformed the betrayal into something much larger than infidelity.

His anger is directed not simply at broken vows but at what those choices revealed about her character. That distinction matters. Many people eventually forgive mistakes, but they struggle far more with actions that appear to reflect deeply rooted values.

At the same time, trauma has a way of freezing people at the worst moment of someone else’s life, making it difficult to believe they are capable of growth afterward.

An interesting psychological perspective is that people often judge betrayal differently depending on what they believe caused it. Many observers can understand someone making an impulsive decision during emotional vulnerability, even if they strongly condemn it.

However, when the betrayal includes repeated choices, deception, and disregard for innocent third parties, the emotional response shifts. Instead of asking, “Why did this happen?” people begin asking, “Who is this person?” That change is significant because the injured partner is no longer evaluating a relationship.

He is reassessing the entire identity of the person he loved. Once someone becomes associated with moral danger rather than emotional pain, rebuilding trust becomes dramatically more difficult.

Psychologist and relationship researcher Dr. John Gottman has long argued that trust is built through countless small moments of choosing a partner’s well-being over immediate self-interest. When those choices repeatedly move in the opposite direction, the injury extends beyond the affair itself because the betrayed partner begins questioning every shared memory and future expectation.

Similarly, therapist Esther Perel explains that infidelity often destroys not only trust but the story couples believed about their relationship, forcing both partners to confront painful questions about identity, responsibility, and whether healing is genuinely possible rather than simply desired.

Their work emphasizes that recovery requires radical honesty, consistent accountability, and sustained behavioral change rather than apologies alone.

Viewed through that lens, the husband’s struggle becomes understandable. His inability to stop seeing his wife as “a terrible person” may be less about holding onto resentment and more about trying to reconcile two completely different versions of the same individual. Therapy can help process that conflict, but it cannot force a new belief before enough evidence exists to support it.

Likewise, genuine remorse from the unfaithful partner is measured less by regret over consequences and more by a sustained willingness to accept responsibility without defensiveness or minimizing the damage.

Ultimately, reconciliation is not an obligation, nor is forgiveness a deadline that anyone else can impose. Sometimes therapy helps couples rebuild a stronger relationship, and sometimes it provides the clarity needed to leave with confidence instead of confusion.

The healthier question is not whether she deserves another chance, but whether enough consistent evidence exists for him to believe that the person standing before him today is fundamentally different from the one who made those devastating choices. That answer can only emerge through time, accountability, and actions that repeatedly demonstrate integrity.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors urged OP to leave immediately rather than remain with a cheater

shakeyfire − She was gonna leave u! ! Why are u still here! ! Please find someone worthy

Unique_Blacksmith247 − Because she is, move on. Once a cheater, always a cheater.

Sleepytitan − The best time to leave was a while ago. The second best time to leave is now.

This group condemned her behavior as immoral and far beyond an ordinary affair

incuriosa − dude, she IS a piece of s__t 😭 this is insane behavior, one thing is an affair but this is just crazy, she has no sense of morality

Cryptic99 − Leave her wtf. . She is a pos. You cannot stay with a cheater under any circumstance.

These commenters criticized OP for choosing to stay despite everything she had done

AllInkalicious − You’re staying with her? No-one else to blame now. You’re just doing this to yourself.

jumanjiz − It’s a whole post …. That ends with them still together? Lol. What’s the matter with some dudes

These users doubted therapy could repair the lasting anger, hurt, and broken trust

Majorflatulence − In this case why waste the time and money on therapy?

Seems like you’re just giving her expensive closure that she doesn’t deserve.

ObjectiveFinal179 − My wife is my whole world but if she cheated on me like that there’s no way I could be with her day to day and not feel...

and hurt every single day, every single moment to where there’s just no way it would work

I would be miserable and the relationship would fall apart anyways

This Redditor jokingly suggested retaliating with the affair partner’s fiancée

JackelGigante − Bro you gotta at least f__k the dude’s fiancé if you’re gonna stay with her

Do you think a marriage can survive after trust and respect are both broken? Or is there a point where moving forward separately becomes the healthiest path for everyone involved? Share your thoughts below.
