She Reconnected With an Old Friend After Years Apart, Then Discovered She Was Being Recruited as a Free Homeschool Teacher

Most people are happy to hear from an old friend. A message from someone you haven’t spoken to in years usually sparks a little curiosity, maybe even nostalgia.

You wonder where life has taken them and whether you’ll pick up right where you left off.

One 26-year-old woman thought she was getting exactly that when a former high school friend unexpectedly reached out after nearly five years of silence.

At first, the conversation felt normal. They caught up on life, talked about what had changed, and filled in some of the gaps left by years of distance.

Then the real reason for the call emerged.

Her friend wasn’t reaching out to rebuild a friendship at all. She wanted a favor. A very large favor. One that involved educating her homeschooled daughter, completely free of charge.

The more details that surfaced, the more uncomfortable the situation became.

Here’s what happened.

She Reconnected With an Old Friend After Years Apart, Then Discovered She Was Being Recruited as a Free Homeschool Teacher
Not the actual photo

'no, i will not be your free teacher to your home-schooled kid?'

so, for context. my friend (amy, fake name, 26) and i (also 26) know each other since highschool,

however we grew apart over the years and havent talked since 2020, untill now.

when we were 19, she had her daughter (8?) but i havent seen her since she was one.

the dad of her child hasnt been present since she was born but luckily amy has a really good and supportive family + works from home.

amy recently contacted me and we caught up on our lives. It turns out she's homeschooling her daughter because

she doesn't trust the education system, but the girl is having some difficulties to keep up with other children their age.

In addition, the girl has some difficulty reading and has poor reading comprehension (this is according to what amy told me).

It turns out she only contacted me again so I could help her daughter with her studies.

I'm a historian, but according to her, that's the same as being a history teacher,

and therefore I can also teach what would be the equivalent of english in the US. ??????

She also wants me to do it for free since she no longer feels capable of teaching her daughter, and I,

as her friend, have to help her. We haven't spoken in years, and now she shows up with this?

In my country, children who are homeschooled must pass anual exams to prove that

they are learning at the appropriate pace for their age and to validate their studies; otherwise,

I don't know what might happen (probably a fine and being forced to return to school),

but that's not my problem and I don't have the skills to help either, I'm not a teacher,

I don't know how to teach such a young girl, and that's what my friend doesn't want to understand..

Please don't homeschool if you don't have the resources and skills to do so 😭. *edit to add some more context.

A Reunion With an Unexpected Agenda

The woman explained that she and her former friend, whom we’ll call Amy, had known each other since high school.

Like many friendships, theirs slowly faded over time. By 2020, they had stopped speaking altogether.

Years passed without contact.

Then Amy suddenly reappeared.

The initial conversation felt friendly enough. Amy shared updates about her life and talked about raising her daughter, who was now around eight years old.

She explained that she had chosen to homeschool the child because she didn’t trust the education system.

At first, nothing seemed unusual.

But as the conversation continued, Amy revealed that homeschooling wasn’t going particularly well.

According to her, her daughter was struggling academically. The girl reportedly had difficulty reading, poor reading comprehension, and was falling behind other children her age.

That’s when Amy made her request.

Or rather, her demand.

Because the woman worked as a historian, Amy apparently concluded that she was essentially a teacher.

In Amy’s mind, being knowledgeable about history somehow translated into being qualified to teach a young child multiple subjects, including language arts.

The logic left her completely baffled.

Being a historian and being an elementary school teacher require entirely different skill sets. One focuses on researching and analyzing historical information.

The other involves specialized training in child development, lesson planning, literacy instruction, classroom management, and educational assessment.

Yet Amy seemed convinced there was little difference.

Even more surprising was her expectation that all of this work should be done for free.

After years of silence, she had resurfaced not to reconnect but to recruit unpaid help.

The Bigger Problem Behind the Request

The woman wasn’t simply frustrated by the entitlement.

She was also worried about the child.

In her country, homeschooled children must pass annual assessments demonstrating that they are meeting educational standards for their age.

These evaluations help ensure children receive an adequate education regardless of where they learn.

Amy’s daughter appeared to be struggling to meet those expectations.

The woman recognized that she lacked the training necessary to help. She wasn’t a teacher. She had no experience teaching young children how to read or improve literacy skills.

Most importantly, she understood something Amy seemed unwilling to accept.

Knowing a subject and teaching a subject are not the same thing.

Many people assume that because they understand a topic, they can automatically teach it effectively. Professional educators know otherwise.

Teaching requires its own expertise.

Without that expertise, even highly intelligent adults can struggle to help children learn foundational skills.

Expert Insight: Why Teaching Requires More Than Subject Knowledge

According to educational researcher Lee Shulman, effective teaching requires not only content knowledge but also what he called “pedagogical content knowledge.”

In simple terms, teachers must understand both the material itself and the best ways to help students learn and understand it.

Source: American Educational Research Association – Lee Shulman’s Teaching Framework

This distinction helps explain why expertise alone doesn’t automatically make someone a good teacher.

A historian may understand historical events in great depth, but teaching reading comprehension to an eight-year-old requires different methods, strategies, and developmental knowledge.

The situation also highlights a challenge sometimes faced by homeschooling families.

Research consistently shows that successful homeschooling often depends on substantial parental time, resources, structure, and access to educational support systems.

When those resources become limited, children can fall behind despite their parents’ best intentions.

That appears to be the concern at the heart of this story.

The issue isn’t whether homeschooling is inherently good or bad. It’s whether a child is receiving the support they need to thrive.

Reflection & A Difficult Reality

For many readers, the most disappointing part wasn’t the homeschooling debate.

It was the friendship itself.

Few people enjoy realizing that someone only reached out because they wanted something. The excitement of reconnecting quickly fades when the relationship turns out to be transactional.

At the same time, there is a deeper sadness here.

An eight-year-old child is struggling academically, and the adults around her appear to be scrambling for solutions.

That reality makes the situation feel less like a disagreement between friends and more like a warning sign that shouldn’t be ignored.

The child deserves support from people who are actually qualified to provide it.

Reddit Had Plenty to Say About This One:

Many commenters criticized Amy’s decision to reject traditional schooling while simultaneously acknowledging that her daughter was falling behind. jclom0 − So she doesn’t trust the “education system” but is f\*\*\*ing it up herself. Hmmmm.

She sounds… special. I can see why you drifted apart. Luckily not your problem FTW!

CerealSemantics − She doesn't trust the education system but failing to educate your child yourself is why I don't trust the homeschooling system

Jen5872 − "I'm sorry, but I can't teach your child. I don't appreciate that I haven't heard from you in 7 years and you only contacted me

because you want a favor. I'm not a teacher. It sounds like she would be better off in school with trained teachers. "

Others pointed out that teaching is a specialized profession requiring training that neither Amy nor her friend possessed.

linzava − You to her: “There’s only one option for free education and you opted out of it.

If she was in public school, this wouldn’t be a problem. Also, teachers require special training and education to teach

, neither you nor I possess that training, enroll her in public school so they can catch her up before it’s too late.

” I get that she’s trash for reaching out because she wants something from you,

but if you focus on shaming her into enrolling her kid, you might be changing that kids life for the better.

KIrkwillrule − We are uniquely qualified for home school. We have 3 adults in the home,

including a masters, a BA,and skilled craftsmen. And we have stable income that dosent require any of us to work

full time. We homeschooled the last 4 years for our youngest.

When we got the info that there was an opening for our youngest at the prefered local school we jumped on it.

These last few years we discovered more important than being able to teach Is the parents having any ability for follow through.

The number of times we had one of the neighbors kids we were schooling and parents were no show for pickup is staggering.

If you dont set boundaries like you cannot utilize us for free, and we won't feed your kids every day for free, you will get hurt.

Try hold some boundaries and watch how fast this mom freaks out and disappears from your house

Alicam123 − She can also have the child taken away for social, mental and educational n__lect.

Several readers encouraged the woman to maintain firm boundaries and refuse the request. Others hoped the situation might eventually motivate Amy to seek professional educational support or consider enrolling her daughter in school.

TheOneTrueTrench − Tell her to talk to adults (35yo+) who were homeschooled and ask what they think about homeschooling.

ritlingit − Amy’s not your friend. She got in contact with you so she can take advantage of you.

What she needs is a social worker to get her in contact with the people and resources she needs.

It’s a sad thing that she’s so ignorant about education. Do her a favor and

look up some homeschooling resources and send them to her and cut contact.

Secure-Corner-2096 − Your friend’s request was extremely entitled. Although not related to your post, I’d like to share a rant.

I also had a close friend who home schooled her children for similar reasons.

She was highly intelligent but followed obscure teaching methods that allowed her children to simply follow their interests.

More than thirty years later, none of the children have the basic knowledge high school graduates possess.

They all still live at home. The oldest is in her late 30s and has severe mental health issues,

so it might be justified in her case. But the remaining two children

haven’t had a successful romantic relationship and can barely hold down a job.

The lack of social conditioning also had an enormous impact on each.

Schools have a vested interest in producing educated children, not all parents do.

Hope your friend uses your refusal as a reason to put her child into school.

Reese9951 − Homeschooling is creating a large percentage of total indoctrinated,

antisocial morons due to mostly unqualified parental teachers

Sometimes saying no is the most responsible answer.

This woman wasn’t refusing because she didn’t care about the child. In many ways, her refusal stemmed from recognizing her own limitations and understanding that the girl needed help she wasn’t qualified to provide.

Good intentions cannot replace expertise.

Neither can friendship.

The unfortunate reality is that children only get one chance at their early education. If a chosen system isn’t meeting their needs, the solution isn’t to pressure old friends into becoming unpaid teachers.

It’s finding the resources that actually give the child a chance to succeed.

Do you think the woman was right to refuse, or should friends step in when a child’s education is at stake?
