Man Destroyed His $2,500 MacBook Twice, But Apple’s Mistake Saved Him Thousands

in Social Issues

He spent $800 repairing his expensive MacBook after a mysterious hardware failure, thinking the worst was finally behind him.

Then, on the very first night after getting it back, one careless mistake almost destroyed everything again.

After a few drinks, he settled in to enjoy his freshly repaired laptop, only to accidentally spill an entire bottle of Coke Zero across the keyboard.

The machine immediately shut down, and he knew he had just ruined the repair he had waited for.

The next day, he returned to Apple and claimed the same issue had returned.

But when the repair center discovered liquid damage, they demanded the full cost of another replacement.

Facing a $2,500 bill he couldn’t afford, he made one desperate call that changed everything.

Man accidentally destroys his newly repaired MacBook, then gets an unexpected second chance from Apple

'I made a huge mistake, so I scammed Apple out of $2500?'

This happened about a year ago.

I have a 2024 MacBook Pro. Brand new was around $2500 itself, so I tried

to take good care of it.

A few months in, I closed it without realizing a charging cable was sitting in

the middle and apparently gave the screen internal damage, making about

1/5 of the screen unusable.

That sucked, but apparently something worse happened. Sometime around

mid-2025, I woke up and tried to open my MacBook to do some work. It

wouldn't turn on. The charger wouldn't even light up when I plugged it in.

It was like it completely bricked. There wasn't any other damage I was

aware of, so I'm not sure what happened. I brought it to an Apple store.

They figured it was probably something with the logic board and shipped it

for repair.

I had to pay about $800 for the repair. Sucks, but it is what it is. Cheaper

than a new MacBook anywhere near that quality. At the same time, they

replaced my screen! I got a 2-for-1. Great stuff.

I had gotten it back on a Friday night, when I was set to go out with some

friends. I picked it up after work, came home and did the basic setup so it

was all ready to go. I went out, got pretty drunk, came home, grabbed a

coke zero from the fridge and prepared to watch some youtube videos on

my freshly-repaired MacBook before bed.

It took about 20 minutes for me to DRUNKENLY KNOCK OVER THE ENTIRE

BOTTLE all over my keyboard. It almost immediately powered off. I killed it.

I basically reverted everything back to where I was before. I did the

dumbest thing imaginable, right after I had just gotten everything fixed.

After a depressive sleep, what did I do? I went back to the Apple store the

next day. I said "hey, I just got this fixed, and the same issue is happening,

idk what happened?". They apologized and sent it back in, telling me it's a

re-repair so there won't be a charge.

A few days later, I got an alert from the Apple repair center. They had

found liquid damage. Shocking. Huge surprise. Who could have predicted

that. And they wanted $2500 to cover it or they won't fix it, because it

wasn't something there before.

So... what did I do? I called Apple. I said, essentially, "hey, this is a re-repair,

it says there's liquid damage? I don't know what that's all about. I just got

this back and sent it back in." Initial person was really confused. I don't

blame him. He escalated it to a supervisor, who was an incredibly nice and

helpful woman. She profusely apologized, said there must've been some

kind of breakdown in their process, and said they'll cover it and repair it.

$2500 roadblock went away. They replaced everything needed (again) and

sent it back, and I paid nothing.

Lesson learned. Only thing I was worried about was that some Apple tech

might've gotten chewed out. I have a friend who's a former Genius Bar

employee who assured me that's unlikely, so I hope nobody did. Take care

of your expensive stuff yall.

Edit because of some comments: I absolutely could not have afforded the

repair cost. I had maybe a few hundred in the bank after the initial repair,

which is why I freaked out and tried to play dumb. Yes this really happened.

I'm normally pretty good at taking care of things, I just hit a parade of

horribles that ended up with very lucky timing where I was able to do this. I

still have the repaired MacBook to this day which has been (thankfully)

perfectly fine.

Financial panic can make otherwise responsible people act against their own values, especially when one careless moment threatens to erase months of sacrifice.

Shame often intensifies that fear.

Instead of admitting what happened, a person may become focused on escaping the consequences before fully considering who else could be affected.

In this situation, the MacBook owner was not merely facing another broken computer.

He had already spent approximately $800 repairing an expensive device and had little money left afterward.

Spilling a drink on it only hours after receiving it back likely created an overwhelming mixture of embarrassment, self-directed anger, and financial dread.

Rather than disclose the accident, he presented the damage as a continuation of the earlier problem.

Apple eventually accepted responsibility for what appeared to be a failure in its repair process and covered another costly replacement.

A fresh perspective is that his behavior may have come less from calculated greed than from a desperate attempt to avoid feeling powerless.

He knew he had caused the damage and openly acknowledged that playing dumb was wrong.

However, fear of an unaffordable bill gave him an immediate incentive to reinterpret the situation in the most favorable way possible.

That distinction explains his actions, but it does not excuse them.

The company’s generosity was based on incomplete information, and an employee or department could potentially have been blamed for a mistake that never occurred.

This helps explain why the owner emphasized his empty bank account, unusual bad luck, and concern that no technician was punished.

Those details suggest that he still wanted to view himself as a decent person who made one frightened decision, not as someone comfortable with fraud.

His guilt may be genuine, yet genuine remorse becomes meaningful only when it changes future behavior.

Feeling bad about possible consequences for workers does not erase the fact that he allowed Apple to absorb the cost of damage he caused.

The realistic lesson is larger than simply keeping drinks away from electronics.

Expensive possessions should be insured when possible, emergency savings matter, and panic should not be allowed to transfer personal responsibility onto an uninvolved party.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters mocked the poster’s repeated accidents and questioned how someone could be so careless with expensive electronics

HomemadeBananas − In what shape are the things you don’t try to take good care of?

Raz_Magul − Clumsy people and expensive tech don’t gel well

crazy-chihuahua − Are you a toddler?

Buzzed_Like_Aldrin93 − Get your s__t together lmao

ProfessionalBuy2757 − How are people so hard on their electronics lmao?

pyrrhic_victory_013 − God I hope you don't drive on the road.....

These Redditors joked that the repaired MacBook would probably be destroyed again almost immediately

stupidber − Can't wait for the update in 3 days after you drop it off a bridge

Silly-Promotion-8494 − try redbull this time so the macbook can just fly

there and back for the re-re-repair

badcobber − Sound you will just break it again shortly anyway. Enjoy while you can

These users reassured the poster that Apple could easily absorb the repair cost and advised them not to feel guilty about it

bananatoastie − Apple raised their prices this week on some of their most

expensive tech. Out of interest, I had a look at their balance sheet. They

have more than $50bn in CASH alone. Don’t worry about it. Move on and

try to be more careful next time :)

Suisla4lescomments − 2025 Apple revenue was $416 billion. Your $2,500

will take them 0.19 seconds to recover from. Sleep well.

In the end, he got incredibly lucky.

After a chain of unfortunate events, a damaged screen, a failed repair, and one very expensive mistake, his MacBook survived when it easily could have been gone for good.

The experience was a painful reminder that even the most careful people can have moments of bad judgment, especially when expensive devices are involved.

Sometimes, all you can do is learn from the mistake, take better precautions, and appreciate when things work out in your favor.
