Woman’s Partner Publicly Says He Won’t Marry Her, Leaving Her Questioning Their Entire Future Together

by Leona Pham
August 14, 2026
in Social Issues

She thought they had already built an understanding about their future together.

They had talked about children, marriage, finances, and even decided that a simple life without an expensive wedding was what they both wanted.

But one sentence at a family dinner changed everything.

In front of more than a dozen relatives, her partner casually announced that they were never getting married and told her to find someone else if that was what she wanted.

What hurt wasn’t just the answer, it was the way he chose to deliver it.

Woman questions her future after her partner makes a shocking announcement at family dinner

not the actual photo

'He announced to his family that he will never marry me and that I should find somebody else after 2.5 years together?'

I (34F) have been with my partner 31 (M) for 2.5 years, and lived together for 1.5 years.

He has just humiliated me infront of his entire family at the dinner table

announcing "we're not getting married, if that's what you want find somebody else"

Backstory: we met on hinge, and I distinctly remember filtering out men

who didn't want kids as their preference. We had a conversation early on in

dating about family plans and I distinctly remember him stating he was open to it.

We dated for a year before I moved into his house (I also owned a house

which I rented) after I had moved in, at his best friend's baby shower, he

announced that he never wanted to do this (having a baby) which made me

cry because I loved him so much, if the choice was to give up a chance at

motherhood or lose what I had with him, he won.

We have also talked about not wanting to have a wedding due to the

expense and neither of us particularly enjoy events or crowds of people.

I don't have a good family dynamic, I don't enjoy bringing him to anything

involving my side because even I don't want to be there.. Let alone invite

them all to celebrate us on our dime.

I'm fine being defacto, but the other week he scoffed at me for calling him

my partner.. And I scoffed back saying I'm not calling you my boyfriend, you

aren't a boy. You're a man. Men have partners.

I don't see our future as a typical marriage, kids saga.. But we do have a

shared goal of buying acreage in a few years. This means frugal living

without unecessary spending on things we don't value, like weddings/rings ect.

I have been fine with all of this up until tonight, where the topic of

conversation (at his mom's family dinner table) went from filling out census

forms, to declaring partnerships as tax status, to the difference in tax for

defacto/married couples... And then he announces to a table of over 15

immediate family members that he isn't marrying me, and if that's what I

want then find somebody else.

I have never heard the table so silent in all the years I have eaten there. (his

mom's house, weekly family dinner)

I was genuinely humiliated and felt disrespected. I told him I felt this way

on the ride home and he completely dismissed it. Stating we talked about

this before, I don't see why you're upset.. So AIO?. This feels like a turning

point in our relationship.. It's not normal to announce such a thing to your

family.. I don't feel valued, and if I did as he suggested, find somebody

else... Would he even care?

A relationship is not only built on the decisions two people make, but also on how they treat each other while making those decisions.

Many couples disagree about marriage, children, finances, or the future they want together.

Those differences do not automatically mean a relationship cannot work.

The painful part often comes when one person feels dismissed, embarrassed, or like their hopes were treated as a joke.

In OP’s situation, the issue appears to be less about whether a wedding happens and more about the way the conversation unfolded.

She had already accepted a relationship structure that did not follow the traditional path.

She was willing to skip the wedding, avoid expensive celebrations, and build a future around shared goals like buying land and living more intentionally.

She had also made emotional compromises, including accepting that motherhood might not happen if staying with him meant giving up that dream.

The deeper wound came when her partner publicly announced a major relationship decision in front of his family without considering how it would affect her.

Hearing “we’re not getting married, if that’s what you want find somebody else” at a family dinner could feel less like an honest discussion and more like a public rejection.

Even if he believed he was simply stating his position, the delivery transformed a private disagreement into a humiliating moment.

There is also another perspective worth considering.

Some people view marriage as only a legal or financial arrangement, while others see it as a symbol of commitment and security.

Neither view is automatically wrong. The problem occurs when two people have different meanings attached to the same topic but never fully acknowledge the emotional weight behind it.

This insight is important because OP’s reaction may not be about wanting a large ceremony or a diamond ring.

It seems connected to wanting reassurance that her partner still sees her as someone he is intentionally choosing.

A person can reject a traditional wedding while still communicating commitment, love, and a shared future.

The absence of a wedding is not necessarily the problem; the absence of emotional consideration is.

The situation also raises questions about their earlier conversations.

OP believed he was open to children when they started dating, but later learned he did not want them. She adapted because she loved him.

That does not make her wrong, but it suggests there may be unresolved differences that were pushed aside rather than fully addressed.

Ultimately, couples do not need to follow a specific timeline or tradition to have a meaningful relationship.

But both people deserve to feel respected when discussing their future. A healthy partnership allows difficult conversations to happen without one person feeling discarded.

Before deciding what comes next, OP may need to look beyond the question of “married or not” and ask a bigger one: does this relationship make her feel like a chosen partner, or someone who is simply expected to accept whatever decision is made for her?

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters urged OP to leave, move back into her own home, and stop staying in a relationship where she feels unwanted

Jonathan-Welford − Serve your tenants notice and move back into your house.

Haunting-Aardvark709 − That man doesn’t even like you. He certainly

doesn’t respect you as he humiliated you in public. End it. Give your tenants

notice and move back into your own house.

GirlnHerThoughts − He is telling you what to do, dont ignore it. You will

resent him for the rest of your lives together if you stay. He is making you

change everything you clearly want. Give your tenants the legal time notice

and move back into your house. Don't waste anymore time on him.

FelineGood8 − I can’t believe you stayed at that dinner table. Serve your

tenant notice and move out/move on with your life.

This group believed the partner lacks respect and care

myocardia27 − He doesn’t like you or respect you. What an awful thing to

say. I’d call him on his bluff and leave him. You deserve someone who cares

about you and your feelings. What an ass! I’m really sorry that happened to you.

loachtastic − If you choose to stay after this, you have no one to blame but

yourself. He barely likes you from the sound of it. You can do better.

Fine-Aside42 − “I don't feel valued” I think you have your answer. You

should feel like your partner cares that you’re with them and from this

story it doesn’t sound like you do. Not only that but he’s dismissing the was

he spoke about you and how up feel about it. Seems like he’s pushing to

see how much he can make you put up with.

Which is always a red flag.

InitiativeDramatic21 − This isn't a turning point in your relationship. It's the

end. You deserve to be in a respectful relationship. This ain't it.

These commenters focused on mismatched life goals, arguing OP should not sacrifice her wishes for marriage or children to keep the relationship

dishlexicc − Okay first of all . . NTA. How do I even start this. .. So, it's one

thing to be on the same page, if you BOTH never want to get married he

probably expected you to back him up when he made that statement in

front of 15 intimate family members.

But doubling down saying find someone else if that's what you want

singles you out in front of everyone, very disrespectfully. Other topic, he

was in the "wants kids" section of that filter, but once you are together

does not want that? That's a lie.

Do not compromise your life and goals for someone who wants everything

but will give you none of what you value/want. He sounds. . In a nutshell

incredibly selfish and not at all in tune with your wants or needs.

Disrespecting you in front of family is a very targeted move and a very low

blow out of nowhere for someone who didn't even have the thought to

even need to defend themselves. Do not stay with someone who is so rude

to you just for the sunken ship falacy. You deserve happiness and this guy is

blocking you from the right person for you.

He sounds frankly, like a d__k. I wish you the best, leaving your comfort

zone is not easy. Honestly, thankfully you don't have kids together.

Dear_Parsnip_6802 − It doesnt sound like he would care if you did move

on. You want different things so maybe you should think about it. It sounds

like you are the one doing all the compromising in this relationship.

Conscious_Mine_1011 − I always tell ppl that ~3 years in a relationship is

the make or break year. You need to stand on your boundaries and not fold.

You love the idea of him but clearly not how he treats you. You can find

someone much better than this dismissive j__kass.

These users argued that OP is ignoring repeated warning signs and allowing disrespectful behavior to continue without consequences

Adelucas − He's lied, gaslit you and moved the goalposts repeatedly.

Because you've let him. Every line in the sand, every boundary, you've let

them be suggestions and he's crossed them with no consequence. You've

lost yourself to his whims. You've allowed him to diminish and demean you

because you love him. All the while thinking he loves you too. He doesn't.

He may be nice, he may be fun, but that's surface level. Deep down he

doesn't love or respect you. It's all on his terms and he's never going to

change. Stop looking at him with your heart and start looking at him with

your head. Take off the love goggles and see the red flags waving in the breeze.

"I don't feel valued, and if I did as he suggested, find somebody else. ..

Would he even care? " You aren't valued, and no he wouldn't care. He'd tell

people you broke up because you were too c__ngy, too demanding, a

p__cho ex. Because you developed a spine and refused to be manipulated.

I'm sorry but I truly don't see a healthy relationship.

I see a lifetime of him gaslighting you and manipulating you so it's always

you that is the problem. Then a decade down the line finally waking up and

wondering how you could have been so blind.

nerd_is_a_verb − Respectfully, you’re being an i__ot. He’s told you exactly

what he thinks about you. You are choosing to be delusional about it. You

need some intense therapy for your insanely low self esteem and delusions.

After building a life together for years, OP thought they had an understanding with their partner: no traditional wedding, no pressure, just a shared future built around their own goals.

But one sentence at a family dinner changed everything. Instead of privately discussing their differences, her partner publicly declared that marriage was off the table and told her to find someone else if that mattered.

Do you think OP is overreacting to the public humiliation, or was her partner’s comment a sign of deeper incompatibility?

How would you handle a relationship where your future goals suddenly don’t align? Share your thoughts below!
