Woman Questions Her Anti-A__rtion Husband After He Demands One If She’s Assaulted

Political disagreements can sometimes remain abstract until a real-life situation exposes what those beliefs would mean inside a relationship. When a partner’s values suddenly place you in an impossible position, the conflict may feel much deeper than a difference of opinion.

The original poster has been married to a man whose views on abortion have always been extremely strict. During a conversation about what might happen if she became pregnant after an assault, however, he gave an answer that appeared to contradict everything he had previously claimed to believe.

His response left her feeling that no matter what choice she made, he would punish or abandon her for something done against her will. The subject was especially painful because she had survived sexual assault before meeting him.

Now, she is questioning his reasoning, his political beliefs, and whether their relationship can survive such a disturbing divide. Read on to see why the conversation changed how she viewed her husband.

'My anti-a__rtion husband said if I was assaulted I would have to get one or he would abandon me and now I think he might be a moron'

My husband is a republican voting for Trump who for the entirety of our 7 year relationship has said he has felt he is trans his entire life

but won't transition because of religious family. One of his best friends is in the lgbtq community.

I think that's weird to vote the way he does when he feels like that inside,

but what messed me up today is when we talked about what would happen if I was r**ed and became pregnant.

He said he would make me get a a__rtion or he would leave, that he would not raise or watch me birth another man's kid.

But he has also said in the past that women who get abortions for any reason deserve the death penalty.

I asked him if he succeeded in voting away the rights to that a__rtion that he would desperately want me to get once it affects his marriage,

then is all that is left is abandoning me? And he would not answer me.

I just wanted him to explain to me the thought process because to me it seemed illogical and backwards.

If I am assaulted and get a__rtion like he wants, he will believe I deserve the death penalty. If I keep the pregnancy, he will abandon me.

There is no ending where I am not punished for being attacked.

And while this may seem not important to some people, I was r**ed when I was 21 before I ever met him

so it's always in the back of my mind that it has and can happen, and a topic that means alot to me.

It just makes me feel very alone and confused

because he is a loving husband otherwise so to have him say such heartbreaking things is just so... ugly and out of place.

I feel like he has been groomed and can't see he is only parroting those that raised him because clearly his beliefs contradict each other.

It makes me wonder if the gender identity he hides inside has created a form of self h__red he does not realize,

or if it's just listening to the same talking points over and over has blinded him to critical thinking

(we got a new car recently and now every time he picks me up from work he's listening to some radio show talking about about how joe and kamala are...

Is anyone in relationships with partners that increasingly developed different views and how did you make it work?

And just to add I refer to him as his cis pronouns as it is not something he is publicly open about and says he never will be, so for...

Few discoveries feel more isolating than realizing that a partner’s compassion may disappear when a difficult situation challenges his ideology. Political disagreement can remain abstract for years, but when someone imagines violence, pregnancy, and bodily autonomy affecting the person beside them, those beliefs suddenly become deeply personal.

In this situation, the OP was not merely debating abortion policy with her husband. She was asking whether he would support her after a traumatic assault. His answer created an impossible trap: he would pressure her to terminate the pregnancy, despite believing women who do so deserve extreme punishment, yet abandon her if she continued it.

Every outcome placed blame and suffering on her for violence committed by someone else. Given her history of sexual assault, his response was especially painful because it suggested that his emotional comfort would matter more than her recovery, safety, or freedom to decide what happened to her body.

A fresh perspective is that the contradiction may not arise from confusion alone. Political beliefs can remain rigid while they apply to strangers, then suddenly gain exceptions when personal consequences appear. Her husband seems willing to condemn abortion universally until an unwanted pregnancy threatens his own marriage and identity.

Rather than reconsidering the principle, he creates a private exception while preserving punishment for the woman involved. His unwillingness to answer may reflect the discomfort of recognizing that the two positions cannot coexist fairly.

Psychologists describe this discomfort as cognitive dissonance: tension created when a person holds conflicting beliefs or behaves in ways inconsistent with those beliefs. People often reduce that discomfort through avoidance, selective reasoning, or exceptions instead of changing their worldview.

Separately, reproductive-health advocates define pregnancy coercion as using pressure, threats, or relationship consequences to influence whether someone continues or terminates a pregnancy. Threatening abandonment unless a partner obtains an abortion fits that broader pattern of reproductive control.

This insight explains why OP feels more than ordinary political frustration. Her husband’s statement concerns what power he believes he should have during one of her most vulnerable possible experiences.

His private gender conflict may deserve compassion, but it should not be used to diagnose or excuse his treatment of her. Hidden identity struggles do not automatically cause misogyny, political extremism, or coercive behavior.

The central question is not whether couples can survive different opinions. It is whether OP can feel safe with a partner whose support becomes conditional when she loses control through violence.

Before deciding how to preserve the marriage, she should take his words seriously, seek individual support, and evaluate whether he can acknowledge the contradiction without blaming her. Love can survive disagreement; it struggles to survive a system in which one partner is punished regardless of what she chooses.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters questioned how the relationship could survive without trust, respect, or emotional safety

TeslaPrime − How the f__k do you get along in the first place? He sounds mentally unwell.

GardenInMyHead − He's not a loving husband. A loving husband wouldn't do this. It sounds like He sees you as a property. .. I'm so sorry. This is tough.

despicable-coffin − How can you trust anything he says?

These Redditors argued that his beliefs showed cruelty, hypocrisy, and disregard for OP’s rights

[Reddit User] − So he wants the death penalty for women who have abortions,

but not for men who “make” women have abortions as he has threatened to do to you.

He is fantasising about murdering women for something he doesn’t actually think is wrong.

And not just fantasising, voting in the hope that it will actually happen.

I have known couples that have developed very different views and made it work,

but crucially none of those views were based on hating themselves and others.

Your partner feels he can say such horrible things to you, yet doesn’t feel he needs to answer you

or even acknowledge there’s a problem when you point out you could be one of the women he enjoys imagining being murdered.

I know there is a totality of a relationship we can’t see in one post, fun things you do together,

times when he’s loving or kind or thoughtful, but I can’t believe he can be this cruel and hateful without it affecting other ways  he treats you.

Yeah, some of this might come from self-h__red but he’s choosing by himself to vote against trans rights, to turn that h__red out onto people like you.

Barring actual head injury, his villain origin story is not your problem.   Do you want to make this work?

[Reddit User] − "voting for Trump" Stopped reading there, of course he's a moron.

gogadantes9 − . ..and now I think he might be a moron . ..is a Republican voting for Trump I mean. .. Btw, am not even a USian.

The situation's just so clear for the rest of the world.

There is an exception though, if you're very wealthy with your own company and you vote for Trump, you may not be a moron.

It's just effective business strategy. But otherwise. ..

These users believed self-hatred and extremist influence were shaping his harmful political views.

PlaneWolf2893 − Bye enjoy your closet trans voting for project 2025 self hating ass

AdamSMessinger − That dude needs a boatload of therapy and rightwing deprogramming.

[Reddit User] − You are unfortunately experiencing the secondary results of extremist brainwashing.

But he may have always been prone to that type of thinking; you may not have seen it previously.

Your husband’s beliefs are not even internally consistent; but that’s fairly typical of extremist conservatives

their hard rules are for others and they themselves get a free pass.

But make no mistake — this particular brand of belief absolutely condones, embraces, and proposes violence for those

who they see as transgressing their dictates or for those who belong to outgroups (LGBTQA+, people of color, “liberals,” etc).

The problem here is that this type of thinking tends to escalate and become more and more hateful and violent over time.

You should VERY strongly reconsider your involvement with such a person.

Deprogramming someone from that type of cultish thinking is not easy, and certainly cannot be done without the person’s help.

It will take years for him to recover. Do you want to be exposed to such a person for years? You know exactly what conservatives want for women.

Is that what you want for yourself?

redfox2 − You're right, he's a moron, my condolences. Either suck it up or move on!

Should she attempt counseling before making a decision, or has the ultimatum already revealed enough? Can a marriage survive political differences when those beliefs determine one partner’s control over the other’s body? Share the verdict below.
