Woman Breaks Up After Boyfriend Suggests Sending Her Kids to His Parents, and Everyone Calls Him “Sweet”

Sometimes, one strange comment can completely change the way you see a relationship. What sounds harmless to everyone else can carry a very different meaning when you are a parent, especially when the comment involves decisions about your children that you would never make without them.

The OP had been dating Jason for two years, and their relationship was becoming serious. He got along well with her two children and was especially close to them during fun outings and family activities. During a holiday visit to his parents, however, Jason became increasingly focused on how happy the children were there.

At first, the OP assumed he was imagining a future where they might all live somewhere similar. Then his comments became much more specific. By the end of the trip, she was left questioning what he had actually been suggesting. Scroll down to see why she eventually ended the relationship.

She ended the relationship after her boyfriend repeatedly suggested sending her children to live permanently with his parents

'Am I overreacting when breaking up for him wanting to "gift" my kids to his parents?'

This happened before the pandemic and the memory has been haunting me ever since.

I (F35) was dating Jason (M34) for 2 years and the relationship was getting serious, he had met my kids (M12 and F10).

I had met his parents and I really liked them, they were warm and welcoming of me and really wanted to meet my kids.

Jason wasn't the most fatherly person but he did make an effort to be accented in a being the fun uncle kind of way.

He was likable and easy going, but more in a friend/playmate way.

As time progressed we spent more time together, everything seemed good except I would have liked him to spend more time with us in everyday settings

(having dinner, after school hangouts in the yard etc) while he preferred to only join in on special occasions or playtime settings

(celebrations, going to the theme park, movies, trying out VR gear, surprising them with toys and gifts).

I felt it might be a bit unrealistic to keep up the all fun all day in the long run but it made my kids happy so I was happy.

Move forward 6 months and we were staying at Jason's parents over the holidays,

they lived on the otherside of the country from us (a large European country for reference).

I had gotten to know them by now and they were very sweet to me.

They had Jason when they were really young and he was their only child but they had fostered when Jason moved for college,

they keept in contact with their foster children and considered them family.

Jason also viewed them as family but he didn't see them as his siblings since they weren't raised together.

I got the impression his parents maybe wanted him to grow up a bit and

they were ecstatic that he had met a nice girl to settle down with and me having kids was never a problem, on the contrary it made them happy.

Well on to what happened.

The weeks before our trip Jason had started talking more about his family,

about his parents having fostered for many years and him not having a big bio-family and feeling lucky being part of a large chosen family.

More than a few times he empathised how wonderful his parents were, how magical it was growing up in a small village in the middle

of a beautiful forest, how great his parents were on fostering.

I liked this new side of him and I loved the stories, seeing him happy reminiscing made me happy.

When we arrived at his parents he seemed happy to come home and to show my kids all the wonderful things he had told me about.

Forest explorations, baking with his dad, seeing the animals with his mom, Legos, boardgames, the garden swing and just running around.

Jason and my kids had a blast!

I think it was on the second day Jason started talking about how wonderful it would be for my kids to grow up in a place like this.

I agreed thinking he was referring to us moving there or somewhere similar, it truly was a magical place!

The day after he said the same thing and added how great the kids were getting along with his parents. They were, so I affirmed.

Later that day I asked Jason if he wanted to move back there som day.

"No, I could never live here. It would be awful, livingin the middle of nowhere!" he said. "Uhm, ok.."

I continued "..maybe somewhere similar, a bit closer to the city?"

He stared at me "No, you know me better than that!" And then he walked away. I just stood there feeling confused.

On the forth day Jason started talking about my kids coming back there, I said we'd love to come back, it's wonderful here.

Then he said "No, just the kids. They are having so much fun here."

I paused not knowing what to answer and then I said "Yeah, maybe.. I guess that could happen sometime in the future."

The next few days he kept praising his parents and how good they were with kids.

And then, the day before going back home he said it flat out, not directly to me but more as if to him self

"The kids should live here all the time, it would make my parents so happy!"

Remembering him saying he firmly didn't want to move back there I asked what he meant.

As if just realising my presence he said "They are having so much fun, it would be great for them to live here all the time and my parents love...

I pointed out "You mean they should live here? Permanently?" He said "Yeah, they should." I said "But you don't want to live here?"

He said "No." It felt like the blood froze in my veins, I could not believe he just said that "I am not leaving my kids, you know that right?"

He hesitated "Uhm, ooh.." and he looked kind of bothered, almostdisappointed, as if I had bursted his magic bobble and dragged him back into reality.

What the actual f__k?! What did he think I would say?

The rest of the trip was thankfully uneventful. The weeks following felt weird, I couldn't let go of what he said and a while later I broke up with him.

I feel like I did the right thing for me and for my kids, but some of our friends think I was acting rash

and that I interpreted what he said to harshly ("I'm sure he never said that, you must have misheard.").

Even my kids grandparents (on their fathers side, not Jasons parents)

keep asking why I broke it of with Jason saying "he was so sweet and meant well". Was I overreacting when breaking up?

Few moments in a relationship are more revealing than discovering that two people have completely different ideas about what the future is supposed to look like. A loving partner can be wonderful company, generous, and kind, yet still hold assumptions about family life that make the relationship fundamentally incompatible.

The OP’s discomfort did not come from one awkward sentence. It developed through a pattern.

Jason increasingly emphasized his parents’ history of fostering, repeatedly praised how happy the children were in their home, and then moved from talking about the experience to suggesting that the OP’s children should return without her. When she clarified that he meant living there permanently, he confirmed it.

Most strikingly, he had already said he would never live in that location himself. That leaves a difficult implication: he appeared to imagine the children being raised by his parents while he remained elsewhere, rather than building a household with them and their mother.

A different perspective makes the situation even more interesting. Jason may not have consciously imagined himself as abandoning the children.

His childhood experience could have shaped an unusually idealized understanding of fostering and chosen family. Seeing the children thriving with his parents may have triggered a genuine belief that he was offering them something wonderful.

In his mind, “they should live here” might have sounded like giving them an extraordinary childhood rather than removing them from their mother. But good intentions do not erase the fundamental boundary he crossed. His proposal revealed how differently he understood parental attachment and responsibility.

Family psychologist Dr. Susan Golombok’s research on family relationships emphasizes that children’s well-being is shaped not simply by the structure of a household, but by the quality and stability of relationships within it.

Her work on diverse family forms, summarized by the University of Cambridge Centre for Family Research, examines how children’s development is connected to the emotional security and relationships provided by their caregivers.

Developmental research more broadly also emphasizes that children benefit from stable, responsive relationships with their primary caregivers, particularly during formative years.

That does not mean Jason’s parents were unsuitable people. In fact, the OP clearly liked them and saw that they were loving toward her children. The problem was never, “Are these grandparents good people?” The question was, “Why does this man believe my children should permanently live with them while I remain their mother somewhere else?”

That distinction explains why the OP’s eventual breakup was reasonable. She wasn’t punishing Jason for having affectionate parents or for imagining a beautiful childhood for her children. She was responding to a fundamental incompatibility about where those children belonged and what role he expected to play in their lives.

The friends and grandparents who say he “meant well” may be focusing on his intentions. The OP had to consider something more important: what his words revealed about the future she and her children would be entering. She did not need to wait until he attempted to make the idea a reality before taking it seriously.

Sometimes a relationship ends not because someone is cruel, but because one conversation reveals a future the other person cannot accept.

For a parent, protecting the basic assumption that her children remain with her is hardly an unreasonable boundary. In this case, leaving may have been less about punishing Jason and more about refusing to gamble her children’s security on the hope that he would eventually understand why his proposal was unacceptable.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters agreed that Jason wanted OP but clearly did not want the responsibility of raising her children

rasalscan − So basically he wanted to ship them off to boarding school but he has a safe, cheap choice of his parents. This guy is nuts.

newprairiegirl − NOR, what the actual f__k did I just read? Was he out pimping for kids to give his parents?

Or did he was to get rid of your kids so he didnt have to be a dad, but wanted you as the prize?

So for any of those weirdos that are saying 'hes so sweet, he meant well', he wanted you to abandon your children and GIVE them away'

be blunt when you tell people, dont sugar coat it, there was no misunderstanding there. Good riddance!

Middle--Earth − He wanted you but not your kids. NOR

These Redditors strongly backed OP’s breakup decision and felt she had every reason to walk away

StringCheeseMacrame − You're not overreacting. He's telling you he doesn't want to be around your kids. You did the right thing.

Designer_Study_8219 − So glad you broke up with him over this. He knew if the kids were a deal breaker early on.

And, you said he was never super interested in them ir involved.

He started planting the 'seeds' of his idea before even getting to his parents then slowly increased what he was saying before outright saying it.

What he did was deliberate and very very manipulative and insidious. You dodged a bullet.

People are saying you must have misunderstood because they can't fathom someone they saw as really nice being so cruel. That is why.

This group was shocked that OP stayed for weeks after discovering what Jason wanted

SlowYourRollBro − NOR. If this is real, then you dodged a bullet. A weird bullet.

LanceWayne2024 − “The weeks that followed” The WEEKS! ?!?! You didn’t instantly RUN? !

These users expressed disbelief that anyone could reasonably question OP’s decision or that the situation happened as described

Aggravating_Cat_6295 − This really doesn't ring true for me. Nobody would reasonably question your decision. It feels like a fable or something.

Brains4Beauty − Is that a joke? Asking if you were overreacting by breaking up with him?

This commenter’s update revealed that surviving a severely abusive relationship had affected her expectations, trust, and ability to recognize unhealthy behavior

Lillypard − I did not expect some old s__tty memory to get this many responses!

The memories of this trip and of that time in my life has been popping up over the years, thankfully it's less frequent now.

When I met Jason I had just got out of a 10+ years abusive relationship and was desperate for someone being nice to me and to my kids.

There were a lot other things going on with Jason and I know now I was accepting a lot of things I shouldn't.

The thing still bothering me is people questioning why I broke up when he was such a nice guy,

pointing out how I broke his heart and how devastated he was for a long time after.

I admit he was a nice guy compared to my ex, he never pointed a gun at me or shoved me down stairs while pregnant

or put things I'm allergic to in my food or had a tantrum screaming and throwing things while I was driving.

Jason often wasn't very considerate of my feelings.

I'm in a much better place now but I struggle with trusting people and letting them close.

I don't have many friends from that time but your comments made me realise maybe I should let go of the few I kept.

Can a parent mourn an imagined future while wholeheartedly embracing the child actually standing in front of them? And perhaps more importantly, is being willing to learn sometimes the strongest form of parenting there is?
