Man Removes Brother From His Phone Plan After $612 Debt, But His Mom Says He’s Too Harsh

Sometimes a small unpaid favor becomes a much bigger issue when one person keeps treating it like an endless obligation.

The original poster set up a family phone plan to help his brother during a difficult period, with the understanding that everyone would pay their share each month. Years later, his brother is financially stable but has fallen more than $600 behind.

When the poster finally addressed the unpaid balance and decided to remove his brother from the plan, his mother accused him of prioritizing money over family. Now he is questioning whether he handled the situation fairly or went too far.

A person confronts their family after years of unpaid phone bills from a brother who stopped holding up his end

'AITAH for telling my mom I'm not my brothers phone company?'

I have the family plan, 4 lines. Me, my wife, my mom and my brother.

I set it up in 2021 because it came out cheaper for everyone and my brother was between jobs at the time.

The deal was he sends me his share every month. 34 dollars.

He paid the first five months. Since then hes paid twice, both times after I chased him for weeks.

Hes been working steady since 2023. Hes 31.

I only added it up properly last week because were saving for a kitchen and I wanted every autopay on one page.

Hes 14 months behind. 612 dollars.

I texted him the number and said theres no rush on the money but the line comes off at the end of the month.

He read it, left it four days, then sent back "wow ok".

My mom called sunday. She said Im being petty over a phone bill, that family dont invoice each other, and was 612 dollars really worth falling out with my brother...

I said thats sort of my point, its 612 dollars, and Im not his phone company.

She hasnt called since. My wife thinks I was right but should have just taken the line off quietly instead of sending him the total.. AITAH?

A phone bill may look like a small family issue, but the real conflict is not about $34 a month. It is about an agreement that one person stopped honoring while everyone else was expected to ignore it.

The OP created the family plan as a favor. At the time, his brother was unemployed, and the arrangement made sense: everyone would contribute their share, and the OP would handle the account. Helping family during a difficult period is generous. The problem is that the difficult period ended, but the expectation of being helped continued.

Fourteen months of missed payments is not a one-time mistake. It is a pattern. The brother is not someone who forgot one payment or had a temporary emergency. He has been working steadily for years and still allowed someone else to cover his responsibility.

The mother’s argument that “family doesn’t invoice each other” is understandable in some situations, but it does not really apply here. Family members often help each other, but help works because there is mutual respect. A favor that becomes a permanent unpaid obligation stops feeling like generosity and starts feeling like being taken advantage of.

The OP also did not immediately cut his brother off without warning. He calculated what was owed, communicated the amount, and gave him notice that the line would be removed. That gave his brother an opportunity to address the issue.

The brother’s response of “wow ok” is also telling. Instead of acknowledging the debt or explaining his situation, he reacted as though the OP’s boundary was the surprising part. That likely made the situation more frustrating.

The wife’s point about quietly removing the line is understandable from a conflict-avoidance perspective, but telling someone why a boundary is being set is not wrong. The brother should know that the issue is not the phone service itself; it is the unpaid agreement behind it.

A healthier family approach would be for the brother to either pay what he owes, create a repayment plan, or move to his own phone plan. The OP can still love his brother while refusing to manage his expenses.

Helping someone through a hard time is kindness. Continuing to pay for an adult’s bills after they no longer need help is a choice, not an obligation.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters said the mother should cover the brother’s unpaid phone bill if she disagrees

ccannon707 − Mom can pay his bill.

Red-Sun-Cinema − NTA - ask your mom if $612 is worth falling out with you over it.

And if it's not such a big deal, then your mom should have no problem covering your brother's being behind $612.

PompousTart − Your mom can pony up the $612 and you can still drop him from the plan.

Purple_Candy_5170 − Why doesnt mom pay the bill if $612 isnt that much in this economy? NTA

These users criticized the brother for failing to pay his own phone expenses as an adult

Ok_Quarter1854 − NTA. Brother owes you a lot of money. An agreement is an agreement. Also, why can't a grown man pay for his own phone?

Not sure why you are paying for your mom either. Is she like retired and on fixed income?

DanaMarie75038 − NTA. 31 y/o and can’t even pay his own phone bill! What a loser.

I’d turn off his connection. He will voluntary leave if he can’t use it.

Ok_Childhood_9774 − Of course you're NTAH. Your brother is a working adult.

He can pay his own bills or he can ask your mommy to pay it for him since it's apparently a trivial amount.

These users viewed the unpaid balance as a repeated pattern, not a simple mistake

Ok-Mixture-4656 − NTA, 612 dollars over 14 months is a pattern not a mistake.

Agile-Entry-5603 − NTA “Family” doesn’t translate to “doormat”. Cell service costs money.

If he can’t pony up a lousy $34 he deserves to have to find his own carrier and find out what a deal he had, that he blew.

You were right to notify rather than quietly dropping.

Individual-Paint7897 − NTA. I would take your mom off too.

Was removing his brother from the plan the right move, or should family members be more forgiving? How would you handle a relative who stopped paying their share? Share your thoughts below!
