Divorced Dad Ends Relationship After Girlfriend Reveals Her “Parenting Plan” For Their Future Baby

OP thought he was ready to start dating again after ending a 25-year relationship, but his first serious relationship afterward revealed some major incompatibilities.

While the woman he dated had many good qualities, their expectations about marriage, parenting, and personal boundaries were completely different.

At first, OP believed the relationship could work if they simply respected each other’s differences.

But as time passed, he realized he was being asked to take on responsibilities that didn’t feel fair, especially when it came to future children and helping her family.

Eventually, he made the difficult decision to walk away.

not the actual photo

'I, M38 broke up with my girlfriend earlier this year and lied to her about why?'

We'd been dating for months, not long after my divorce from a 25 year

relationship (dated since we were 12). Anyways, the woman I was dating

was great in many ways, but I ended things saying I didn't want to have

more kids or marriage, she absolutely did. Sure for the right person, maybe

I could, but getting married again scares the s__t out of me after finding out vows don't matter...

The real reason I broke up with her is that she said if we did have a kid

together, she should be absolved of all diaper changing... ok, no problem, I

have two kids, I've done thousands of diapers. Then I asked what happens if

I am at work and the child soils themselves, her answer was to involve her mother or wait until I get home.

That wasn't the only problem. I have my kids half of every week and am

dedicated to my time with them, when I am not with them, I work on

myself. This was apparently an invitation to demand free labor of me. Her

mother assumed I would shovel snow off her roof the day she asked, and

that I could do the same for her friends, and it wasn't just snow shoveling

either. On a day off, I was asked to go help some of her mom's friends to

move, but my girlfriend or her mom wouldn't be there. It would just be me

and strangers.. And, she was also... kind of terrible in bed. She screamed

too much and reciprocated nothing.. I never told her the truth, I never will, but I did want to get this off my chest.

Sometimes ending a relationship does not require discovering that someone is terrible.

It only requires realizing that building a life together would demand compromises a person no longer wants to make.

This man had recently emerged from a relationship spanning roughly 25 years, so his hesitation about marriage and additional children already carried considerable emotional weight.

Yet underneath his stated explanation were several practical incompatibilities that made his decision easier to understand.

The disagreement about diapers was particularly revealing. Refusing one unpleasant parenting task might initially sound quirky or negotiable.

Saying a soiled child should wait until the father returns from work, however, turns a preference into a caregiving concern.

Parenting inevitably contains inconvenient, exhausting, and unpleasant responsibilities.

A child cannot postpone basic care because one parent has decided certain duties belong exclusively to the other.

The requests from his girlfriend’s family reveal another compatibility issue: expectations around availability.

Helping relatives occasionally can be generous.

Being volunteered to shovel roofs or move furniture for strangers during limited personal time is different, especially when he already divides his week among parenting, employment, and rebuilding his life after divorce.

What one family considers normal mutual assistance another person may experience as entitlement to their labor.

That perspective also makes his stated breakup reason more meaningful. Marriage and children were not minor preferences.

She clearly wanted both, while he was uncertain about ever repeating either experience.

Staying together while privately hoping one person would eventually surrender such major goals could have produced considerably greater resentment later.

His decision not to provide an exhaustive list of criticisms may also have been kinder than complete disclosure.

Honesty matters, but breakup honesty does not require giving someone a permanent inventory of everything their former partner disliked, particularly intimate criticisms that offer little constructive value.

He communicated a genuine incompatibility that was sufficient to end the relationship.

The useful reflection for him now may concern boundaries rather than whether he selected the perfect explanation.

After spending most of his life inside one relationship, he is learning what he will and will not accept in another.

That recalibration can feel uncomfortable.

Ultimately, neither person needs to become the villain.

She can want marriage, children, extensive family involvement, and a particular division of responsibilities.

He can decide that package is incompatible with the life he wants. Sometimes recognizing that difference early is not failure.

It is precisely what dating is supposed to reveal.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters agreed that refusing basic childcare duties was a major red flag and showed poor parenting readiness

qs_al − Any person who wants a child but is not willing to do all of the work

that it takes to have a child is a super big red flag.

adollopofsanity − she should be absolved of all diaper changing What the

f__k do you mean "no problem"? That's 100% a problem. I genuinely hope

her plumbing doesn't work because "I'd wait until you got home" is f__king

child abuse.   That. That should have been the "Oh okay. Welp. We're done.

" moment. Who cares about her mom wanting her roof shoveled? Tell her no.

But abusing an infant that can't function without her because. ... Because

what? Poop is icky? Get the absolute f__k out of here

Lexubex − Yikes. You definitely dodged a bullet. The fact that she'd rather

let her own hypothetical kid sit in a soiled diaper waiting for you to get

home instead of changing it herself is wild. So is volunteering you to help

her mom AND her mom's friends. Especially when you were only together for a matter of months.

It's one thing to ask, but to expect it is ridiculous.

These commenters believed OP avoided a disastrous relationship with someone who seemed selfish and immature

ZainMunawari − Definitely dodged a nuke bro.

moodytail − Insane red flags. You deserve better, man. Don't make yourself be with someone that only knows how to take.

PuffinTown − These grown ass toddlers are ruining thirty-something dating for us all.

lychigo − She's mental. I'm surprised it took you as long to break up with

her cuz nothing you've mentioned paints her in anything but a sociopathic light.

These commenters wished OP had explained his true reasons so she could learn from the feedback

Helpful_Spring_6111 − You didn't lie. You didn't mention the part where

you didn't want marriage or kids \with her\. You did the grownup thing and left that part out.

More_Tacos_n_Vodka − Wow. I wish you would have told her why. She needs some constructive feedback..

velvety_chaos − OP, I kinda wish you would have told her the truth, if for no

other reason than so she could (hopefully) realize how incredibly fucked up

"involve her mother or wait until \[you\] get home" is. Not to mention the

immense entitlement and selfishness of expecting you to do things for her,

her mother, and her mother's friends, in addition to the no reciprocity thing.

Were you being hyperbolic when you said, "after finding out vows don't

matter"? Because vows shouldn't mean staying together no matter what,

even if the relationship has become unhealthy, toxic and/or devoid of

affection, mutual respect, etc. Just my opinion, though. Wtf do I know.

OP entered the relationship after a painful divorce and was already carrying understandable fears about marriage and starting over.

At first, the breakup seemed centered on avoiding another major commitment, but the deeper issues were about expectations, compatibility, and feeling taken for granted.

OP wanted a partner, not someone who viewed him as a built-in caregiver, handyman, or resource for their family.

Do you think OP made the right choice ending things, or should these issues have been discussed and negotiated first?

How important are shared expectations about parenting, independence, and boundaries when building a future with someone? Share your thoughts below!
