Sister-In-Law Wants Free Labor For A Playground, But Gets A Hard No Instead

by Leona Pham

Helping family can be a wonderful thing, but there is a difference between offering support and being treated like free labor.

Sometimes the hardest boundary to set is with the people who assume you will always say yes.

The original poster (OP) and her husband had already spent years dealing with expectations from her sister-in-law (SIL), who often relied on her husband’s willingness to help.

When SIL found a free playground online, she saw it as another opportunity to ask for a favor.

The problem was that her “small favor” involved hours of driving, dismantling, transporting, and rebuilding a large play structure.

Read on to see why OP and her husband finally decided to say no.

Couple refuses to help with a huge favor when their sister-in-law expects free labor and treats it like an obligation

not the actual photo

'SIL expects a full day of free labor.. and lunch?'

To begin, we said no outright. This is just another instance of insane

requests from my SIL (28F) as my husband (26M) literally enabled his twin

brother his entire life and SIL has expected the same treatment since they

got together. His twin brother has never treated us with the same support

in the 10 years I have been with Husband and Husband has finally set

boundaries in the last few years.

SIL found a free playground on FB marketplace and wanted to get it. With

BIL on extended work travel, she asked my husband (and I 25F) to do it. The

entirety of her requests includes a 2hr drive to/from her city in his truck,

disassembly of the play set from the seller, delivery to her home and

reassembly. She did not describe helping at all, likely not being awake for

much of what she described. The cherry on top was that she requested we

do it early in the morning so that when she expected us to finish in the late

afternoon, we could all go to lunch at kbbq. Mind you, she has never paid

for an outing ever.

After we said no, she pulled the sympathy card about holding down the

fort without BIL. She offered $20 for gas and to buy us ice cream if we got dinner.

Sometimes the hardest boundaries to set are not with strangers, but with family members who have become used to receiving help without considering the cost to others.

Saying “no” can feel uncomfortable because family expectations often come with guilt, history, and the pressure to always be the person who steps in.

In this situation, the OP was not rejecting a simple favor.

The request represented a much larger pattern of imbalance.

Moving a playground may sound like a small family favor, but the actual task involved hours of driving, physical labor, dismantling equipment, transporting heavy materials, and rebuilding it.

The frustration came from feeling that the SIL viewed their time and effort as something automatically available rather than something valuable.

After years of one-sided support, even a reasonable request can feel overwhelming because it reminds someone of a relationship where giving has rarely been equal.

A different perspective is that the SIL may genuinely feel overwhelmed while managing responsibilities alone, especially with her partner away for work.

Wanting support is not inherently wrong. Many people rely on family during difficult periods.

However, asking for help requires recognizing the sacrifice being requested.

A favor becomes problematic when the person receiving help treats it as an obligation and offers minimal appreciation or effort in return.

This perspective shows why the OP and her husband’s decision was understandable.

Their refusal was not about refusing to support family; it was about refusing to accept a situation where their time, labor, and resources were treated as unlimited.

The offer of a small amount of gas money and a meal also highlights a mismatch between what was being requested and what was being offered.

Compensation does not always need to be financial, but genuine appreciation and willingness to share the workload matter.

The husband’s role is also important because family patterns often continue when someone has always been expected to rescue a relative.

By setting boundaries, he is not abandoning his brother or SIL; he is creating a healthier relationship where support is based on choice rather than pressure.

Ultimately, helping family can be meaningful, but support should come from generosity, not obligation.

A healthy family relationship allows people to ask for help while also respecting that others have their own time, energy, and limits.

Sometimes saying “no” is not a sign of selfishness, it is a way to prevent love from turning into resentment.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These commenters agreed that OP’s sister was ignoring OP’s feelings and expecting too much despite her own struggles

Veblen1 − I dunno. In your concern about yourself,, you've decided to

forget the facts that (a) it's her birthday, (b) her beloved aunt has cancer,

(c) their family cat also has cancer, some kind of cancer cats get, (d) she's

trying to save money for her kids' Christmas gifts, (e) the cat, oh I mentioned that, 😄

dd97483 − you gotta cut her off, cold turkey. she isn’t going to change.

Middle_Process_215 − So you do all that for her AND BUY DINNER!!!!!

PresentationTough384 − Lol she made a very comfortable plan for her day

all at your time and expense. I am glad you said no.

These commenters used humor or personal examples to highlight how unreasonable the free labor request was

PeregrineTopaz06 − If you grab the playground for yourselves and set it up

in your yard, you can entertain them anytime! /facetious

blueSnowfkake − I used to offer to pay my younger brother in ice cream to

wash my car. I was probably 17 and he would have been 12. That deal didn’t last long.

Square-Trouble1456 − My husband recently helped put together a play

ground for a friend. It was a brand new structure with instruction, there

were 3 other men helping and it still took 2 days. Hubby owns a handyman

business and said if it was anyone else he would have charged $1500 for

the labor. SIL is way out of line.

MarineJAB − Bless her heart.

These commenters supported setting firm boundaries and telling the sister to handle the playground herself

Alwaysfresh9 − Time to have fun with it. Start spamming her with equally

wild requests. Every. Single. Time. She starts to open her mouth to ask for

something. And randomly, just to keep her cortisol up.

tired-as-f − It can wait for hubby to sort out. You owe her nothing.

Strong_District_5894 − Nope. Let her hire someone.

Evillene − I would tell your husband, if he agrees to do this " sorry you're on

your own " At this point someone's has to put a stop to this nonsense.

The OP and her husband were asked to take on what was supposed to be a simple favor, but the reality was far more demanding.

Her sister-in-law wanted them to drive two hours, dismantle a playground, transport it, rebuild it, and somehow still have enough energy for a family outing afterward.

When they declined, the response was not understanding but another attempt to guilt them into helping, with only a small offer to cover gas and dinner.

Was the OP right to stand firm after years of being expected to rescue her brother-in-law’s responsibilities, or should family favors come with more flexibility?

How much should relatives be expected to sacrifice for each other? Share your thoughts below!
