Dad Demands His Kids Split Their Inheritance With Stepsiblings, Then Threatens To Cut Them Off

Inheritance disputes can expose family tensions that stayed hidden for years. Grief, money, blended-family expectations, and old wounds often become tangled together, leaving the youngest people involved to carry pressure they never created.

The original poster (OP) and his teenage sister were named in their late grandparents’ will alongside their cousins, while their younger stepsiblings were excluded. Although neither sibling had any control over that decision, their father demanded that they divide the inheritance equally among all four children or risk losing their relationship with him.

With the money still tied up in legal proceedings and his sister already deeply upset, OP is unsure how to protect both their future and their family bond. Read on to see how Reddit responded to this painful ultimatum.

Two siblings inherit from their grandparents, but their father demands they share it

not the actual photo

'Late grandparents left me (19M) and my younger sister an inheritance but not our stepsiblings and dad (51M) wants us to share with them or face no relationship'

My dad (51M) married my stepmom (46F) 7 years ago.

My dad has me (19M) and my sister (17) and my stepmom has my stepsister (13) and stepbrother (10).

We all get along okay and things were cool until a year ago when my grandpa died

and in his will it was revealed that once grandma died me and my sister would be left an inheritance along with all our cousins on dad's side of the...

So it was us two, my aunts two kids, uncles three kids (adopted) and another uncle's one kid.

My stepsiblings were not included and when grandma died earlier this year that was undeniable.

She had named each grandkid she was leaving an inheritance to.

My sister and I were not expecting our dad to act like he was angry with us, when we didn't choose who got an inheritance.

But he took his emotions out on us and I moved out as a result and my sister spends the night at my place a lot because of it.

My stepmom's more hurt that my adopted cousins were included so blood isn't the issue but her kids weren't even though they have no other grandparents

and she thought my grandparents had accepted them as real grandkids too.

But they got nothing. Not the money or anything sentimental from grandma and grandpa's things.

My sister and I don't have the money yet. There are some legal things to deal with first.

But I already know what I want to do with the money and it's going to be a HUGE help in two or three years time.

A few weeks ago my dad took me and my sister out for lunch and he told us we have to face up to reality.

He said if we want this family to work and if we want a relationship then we need to split the money four ways.

If not then we are not the kids he raised and he doesn't want us to become an infection for the whole family.

He made my sister cry when he was talking like that and he threw our mom (an addict) in our faces which really freaking hurt.

I don't know what people would say I should do which is why I'm asking for advice.

Right now I just want to make sure my sister's okay because this has all been so brutally hard for her.

Inheritance disputes hurt most when money becomes a test of love. The OP and his younger sister did not create their grandparents’ will, yet their father is treating them as though they personally rejected their stepsiblings.

Instead of being allowed to grieve and plan their futures, they are being pressured to repair an adult family disappointment using assets that were deliberately left to them.

The emotional conflict is more complicated than simple greed. The stepmother’s hurt is understandable: her children may have believed they were accepted as grandchildren, only to discover they were excluded from both money and sentimental belongings.

That rejection could be especially painful because adopted cousins were named, confirming that biology was not the deciding factor. However, those feelings belong primarily between the adults and the late grandparents’ choices.

Transferring the burden onto a 19-year-old and a 17-year-old turns grief into guilt and forces the siblings to answer for a decision they never made.

A different perspective is that the father may be trying to preserve harmony in his blended household, but he is doing so by sacrificing his older children’s security. Calling them an “infection,” invoking their mother’s addiction, and threatening to withdraw the relationship are not neutral requests for generosity.

They transform affection into a transaction: surrender the inheritance or lose the father. This may also create resentment between siblings who previously got along, because the money becomes evidence that one group supposedly caused another group’s pain.

Mental-health writer Kendra Cherry explains that guilt-tripping is a form of emotional manipulation intended to influence someone by making them feel responsible for another person’s distress. Repeated guilt pressure can damage trust, produce anxiety and resentment, and make people question reasonable decisions.

She recommends recognizing the tactic and maintaining clear boundaries rather than giving in solely to escape discomfort. The Gottman Institute similarly distinguishes boundaries from ultimatums: a boundary protects one’s own limits, while an ultimatum is designed to control somebody else’s behavior.

Applied here, the father’s demand is an ultimatum, not a healthy boundary. The siblings may voluntarily share someday, but generosity made under fear of abandonment is not genuine generosity. Giving away the money would also not guarantee family peace; it might teach their father that emotional threats work whenever he dislikes their choices.

The practical response is to avoid promising or transferring anything while emotions are high. The OP should protect the legal process, keep financial details private, involve a trusted adult or attorney for his minor sister, and document threatening messages. He can express sympathy for the stepsiblings without accepting responsibility for equalizing the will.

The grandparents made a deliberate decision. The children receiving it are not cruel for honoring that decision, especially when the inheritance could materially shape their education, housing, or future stability. A parent may dislike the outcome, but love should never be conditioned on whether a child hands over money.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These Redditors said the inheritance belongs to OP and should not be redistributed

Darthkhydaeus − It is not your responsibility to correct what your Dad and stepmother feel was wrong about the division.

Your Dad had an opportunity to address this with his mom before she died and never did.

If this inheritance is all it takes to break up a family. You were never one in the first place.

Living-Gazelle-3543 − I agree adoption isn’t the same as step. It would be a bit heartbreaking if the adopted cousins didn’t get anything.

I think your dad is being unfair. To you and to his parents, he is ignoring their wishes.

If they wanted to leave money to the step kids they would have.

I also think the step kids have more advantages - they have a mum who is not an addict, and a step dad who is fighting for them.

You don’t have those things. Keep the money! It’s yours and clearly your grandparents wanted you to have it.

You and your sister need to stick together. That is your real family.

Your dad is basically asking for you to pay to keep his new lady happy? ?? That’s not on.

I don’t know their financial situation but if he wants them to have more money, he should work harder and provide for them himself.

YodlinThruLife − It's your money and your sister's. Period. Full stop.

None of this was your decision and you shouldn't be forced to give your money away when it's your seed money for life.

30 years ago my wife's family took her 20k and we're still upset about it. BTW about how much we talking here?

These commenters argued the father should support his stepchildren with his own money

Mountain-Rate7344 − The adopted cousins are family. Step family can divorce and vanish with zero social repercussions.

Step mum is a gold digger if she's trying to get at the family money like this. Doesn't your dad inherit anything?

Why isn't he sharing that out with the step kids? Why should you and your sister bear this burden? Time to cut out your dad.

Do everything you can to be there for your sister.

ETA: Does this mean you'll get a share of your step siblings inheritance when their grandparents and parents die?

It definitely doesn't but it's something to throw in your dad's face.

FluffyPhilosopher665 − I wouldn’t normally state this, I’m usually quite compassionate in my responses but his behaviour is quite frankly alarming.

I would be steadfast in my response, Grandma left it to you and your sister and cousins.

Please do NOT give your step siblings any of it. Would you expect THEIR grandparents to leave you money?

Please take this as a warning, if this request is followed through (at 19 years old)

you have already established the precedent that as an adult when your dad commands, you handover money!

I appreciate that you don’t want to lose the relationship you have with your father, however it is he who is establishing that boundary not you.

He has already made it clear that money being distributed to children that are not his is more important in this scenario.

The question I have is, would you choose to have a relationship with a person like this if they weren’t your father?

Freudinatress − OP, I hope you realise that EVERYONE here is telling you to keep your money. Every single one. That should tell you something.

These users condemned the father’s ultimatum as emotional blackmail and manipulation

NeolithicOrkney − Just my take on this but anyone who threatens "do what I want or no relationship" is not worth having a relationship with.

They are telling you that what you want never matters. And they will keep using that threat throughout your life.

Your grandparents left the inheritance to you and your sister, it was their dying wish. Do not allow anyone to blackmail you.

Dear_Parsnip_6802 − Your dad threatening to disown you over this would be the thing that would make me not want to share the money.

He’s basically threatening you over money.

I get his step children might have hurt feelings but that’s his mother’s issue not yours.

He’s being extremely unreasonable. I guess he’ll probably write you out of his will now so be prepared for that.

I’d be telling you dad that the fact he’s prepared to not have you in his life over money

that’s not his to give away when he can quite freely share his portion makes you think he’s not really someone you would want in your life.

untakentakenusername − "The answer, dad, is NO. If you continue to push, you're right aboit there being no relationship anymore.

You weaponised decisions not made by us (mom an addict, grandparents who only chose us not You or stepkids) to make us feel bad and are basically blackmailing us.

You're not the father we thought you were. You're letting money come between us.

you dont love us" such audacity. You should absolutely tell him he's being a monster.

He's your father. He's letting money dictate your worthiness of a relationship with him.

He needs to hear how ridiculous that is and he needs to apologise to you guys. Dont be nice. He is stubborn n needs to hear this. Let him die...

Tell him to sort his step kids out with his share if its this important to him wtf. Hes jusg trying to bully u guys Dont give in. Do NOT...

A guy like this will just take your money n still find a reason in the future to throw u guys away. Its your money. Times are tough. Clearly.

your step sibs will be cared for, all their lives. They're good. Times are tough. Keep the money n plan with it wisely

Chocolatecandybar_ − Call your aunts and uncles and tell them what's happening, all of it

Should the siblings refuse further private discussions and communicate only through the executor? Could any relationship with their father recover after such an ultimatum?
