Woman Left Thanksgiving Early for a Movie, Then Demanded the Leftovers She Had Already Rejected

Hosting Thanksgiving takes time, money, and a surprising amount of energy. Most guests understand that an invitation is not just about the food, but also about showing appreciation, being present, and respecting the host’s plans.

The original poster (OP) stayed home for the holiday and prepared dinner for eight friends and relatives, including a cousin she rarely sees. The cousin arrived moments before the meal, spent much of the visit on her phone, left before dessert, and declined an offer to take food home.

The following day, however, she called while OP and her husband were heading to a concert and expected them to turn around so she could collect leftovers. Read on to see why OP decided this would be the cousin’s final invitation.

A Thanksgiving guest declines leftovers, then expects her host to turn back for them

'Entitled Thanksgiving guest wants to come by the day after and get some of the leftovers'

Usually my husband and I travel for Thanksgiving but this year there was concert the day after Thanksgiving

that we wanted to attend so we stayed home and hosted a small Thanksgiving dinner for friends and family, eight people total.

I extended an invite to my cousin Janice (f44), whom I rarely see or speak to even though she lives less than 30 minutes away.

Janice came, she arrived less than five minutes before I told her we were going to eat and she left before we even had pie.

She was on her phone during the blessing and most of the time she was there.

When she announced that she was leaving I asked if she wanted a take home meal because I was going to have plenty of leftovers.

She said no not now, I'm not going home I'm going to meet a friend at the movie theater.

I thought this was a little rude but I didn't say anything and she left without really saying goodbye to anyone.

Friday late afternoon/early evening my husband and I are heading out to the concert and my phone rings, its Janice.

She wants to swing by the house and get some leftovers from the Thanksgiving dinner.

I was totally Gobsmacked, I told her no we were already heading to the concert and we were not home.

She literally asked if we could come back so she could get some leftovers, she was miffed when I said no

we are not turning around now just so she could get some leftovers. I told her if she wanted leftovers she should have taken them when they were offered.

I have not heard anything any other family members, but I am sure I will at least hear from her mother, my aunt,

but most of the family including my aunt, already know that Janice has never been known for her manners.

Also I will not be inviting Janice to any other events that I host.

Hospitality feels generous when it is appreciated, but exhausting when someone treats it like an unlimited service. The OP invited a cousin she rarely saw, prepared a full Thanksgiving meal, and even offered to package leftovers before the guest left.

Refusing to reverse course on the way to a concert was not selfish. It was a reasonable response to someone expecting an entire evening to be rearranged around food she had already declined.

The emotional tension comes from the difference between an invitation and entitlement. Janice arrived moments before dinner, spent much of the gathering on her phone, and left early to meet someone else. None of those actions alone would necessarily justify resentment. People may have other plans, feel socially uncomfortable, or simply prefer shorter visits.

However, her behavior suggested that the gathering was something she could enter and leave according to convenience. Calling the next day for leftovers, and then asking the hosts to turn around, reinforced the impression that their time and plans mattered less than her appetite.

A different perspective is that Janice may not have considered herself demanding. She might have assumed the excess food would otherwise be wasted and viewed collecting it later as harmless. Some families also treat holiday leftovers as communal property rather than part of the host’s private plans. Yet even within generous families, timing matters.

A favor that requires no inconvenience is different from one that asks two people to abandon concert plans and drive home. Her request became unreasonable when she responded to “we are already leaving” as though it were negotiable.

Clinical psychologist Rachel Orleck explains that healthy boundaries define what people are and are not comfortable giving within relationships.

Boundaries are not punishments or acts of rejection; they protect people from becoming overwhelmed, undervalued, or resentful. She also notes that balanced limits preserve mutual respect without requiring someone to become either completely passive or inflexible.

Psychologist Andrea Bonior similarly advises that when someone continues pushing after receiving an answer, repeating a clear limit is often more effective than overexplaining or entering a prolonged debate.

Applied here, “We are not home, and we are not turning around” was enough. The OP had already offered leftovers at the most practical moment. Declining them did not reserve a future pickup appointment, especially without advance notice. Janice was free to ask, but she was not entitled to become offended when the answer was no.

The decision never to invite her again may be understandable, though one frustrating incident does not necessarily require permanent exclusion. A more proportionate boundary would be to stop offering special accommodations and invite her only when her presence would still be enjoyable without expecting gratitude.

Generosity is meaningful because it is freely given. Once it becomes an obligation imposed by the recipient, it stops feeling like hospitality and starts feeling like unpaid service.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors agreed Janice should not receive another invitation

2Dogs3Tents − Looks like Janice just got herself blacklisted.

New_Ice8209 − Wow. I can’t imagine how she would get many second invitations.

dadbodenergy11 − No Janice invite next year….

Laslo_1970 − Last time you invited her I guess?

These commenters mocked Janice’s entitlement and said she deserved no favors

PopJust7059 − Did you tell her you left her some dishes to wash in the sink.

whiskey4mycoffee − Tell Janice she can drive her moocher ass to the grocery store.

Davy_Ray − With the way she treated you, I’m surprised you even offered her leftovers

These users criticized her poor manners and disrespect during a family celebration

CuteYou676 − Who taught her that it's OK to behave this way? Jeez! !!

Tell your aunt, if she calls, that YOUR mother taught you that this was not the way you behave. That'll sting. ..

JayneT70 − I bet Janice was on her phone the entire time she was at the movies

Bulky_Poetry3884 − The meal is a celebration of family and friends to give thanks. Not to be on our devices the entire time.

Was permanently blacklisting Janice proportionate, or should the host simply establish firmer boundaries next Thanksgiving? Would her request have seemed acceptable if she had politely proposed another pickup time?
