He Towed Half His French Vacation Community, and Two Days Later the War Was Just Getting Started

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from defending something you already own. A man in the south of France found that out the hard way this summer, after buying a shared parking lot with three neighbors and watching total strangers treat it like public property.

His first update, about towing a lot full of Airbnb guests, split the internet down the middle. His second update proves that towing them once was never going to be the end of it. What followed was two more days of blocked gates, forged parking permits, and a lawyer on speed dial.

Not the actual photo

Here is how it all unfolded.

'AITAH for towing half the neighborhood ?'

My family (wife side) have a summer apartment in the south of France in a gated community, all year there is no parking issue, but in summer, since Airbnb came...

There is a place with no clear parking line (imagine a big square of concrete) where everyone can park for free.

I had the opportunity with 3 neighbors to buy this "parking" to the copropriety (it's like an HOA but with less power here) so we do buyed it last year.

We made 6 larges parking spaces for our cars with lines and plates numbers in front of each parking spot, and put a gate which is always open for the...

Here in France July and August are 2 months where almost everyone is in vacation so Airbnb and location peak here during this period.

Last week one of the neighbor I buyed the parking with told me the parking was PACKED and he managed to park only one of his 2 cars on a...

( his parking spots were taken, mine too and the third neighbor too and every "free" slot too) so he put a warning sign telling parking is for resident only...

Cue 2 days ago when I come with wife and kids for vacation, I drove by night to avoid traffic and when I got there (3 AM) parking is packed...

Next morning we put a large sign telling cars on assigned parking spot would be towed and text every neighbor to ask for their plate to not tow a resident.....

S__t-hit-the-fan, bunch of Airbnb people called the cops and homeowners to ask why they got towed and the location was saying "with parking" so lot of refund where asked. My...

Some homeowners tell me they gonna sue for the refund they got, some Airbnb tenant told me they will sue for the towing cost. We have everything documented.

Lots of Airbnb homeowners tell us we ATAH here because we didn't tell them ahead, but we do put lots of sign on the parking since last year when we...

Sorry for the bad english, obviously not my first langage and I'm in anger right now.. So are we TAH here for towing everyone here ?

UPDATE:

I posted 2 days ago asking if IATAH for towing half the neighborhood, a lot happened in 2 days, honnestly it's a shitshow, I come here nearly every year since...

We've got people towed in our reserved parking spots again, we've got people towed for parking IN FRONT of the gate

(so nobody could leave the parking at all), we've got people putting sign on OUR reserved parking spots with THEIR plate numbers so they don't get towed

(the management guy called us asking if we added new licences plates to be sure to not tow our cars) I've never encounter this level of entitlement from random people...

We got one of the Airbnb tenant red handed as he was parking in our assigned spot and he showed us an email from one of our ranters neighbor who...

So as of today we are closing the gate and put 2 new warning signs telling people to GTFO our propriety.

No more friendly neighbors.

On the bright side, we were on the pool after lunch, and chatted with an UK family who got towed yesterday and they told us Airbnb was already processing a...

so they were kinda happy with the outcome, I told them they can park in my second space as my wife will leave our second parking spot today.

We took a lot of pictures and got in touch with one of the neighbors lawyer who bought the Space with us,

because we got a lot of phonecalls from Airbnb renters and police and city officials about the issue today (renters gave our info I don't even know if that is...

Lots of new people came today to start their vacation week, I hope they get the hint of the many signs we put and don't come in our parking.

The trouble started small last year, when the man and three of his neighbors pooled their money to buy an unmarked concrete lot inside their gated community. They striped six numbered spaces, one for each car, and left the gate open so overflow visitors could still park for free. It worked fine most of the year. Then July hit, Airbnb season arrived, and the lot turned into a battlefield.

Guests whose listings advertised parking that nobody actually controlled kept filling every space, including the six that were privately owned and clearly marked. After arriving at 3 a.m. to find his own reserved spot occupied, the man posted signs, texted every neighbor for their plate numbers, and finally had the offending cars towed.

That should have been the end of it. It was not. Two days later he returned with an update describing a level of entitlement he had never seen in twenty years of summering there. Guests started parking directly in front of the shared gate, trapping every car inside the lot at once. Others scrawled fake plate numbers on paper and taped them to the reserved spots, hoping to dodge another tow.

One guest, caught red handed, produced an email from a disgruntled neighbor who had explicitly told him to ignore the signs and park anyway. That detail changes the story. This was no longer confused tourists misreading a sign written in French. Someone inside the community was actively coaching outsiders to break the rules.

It is easy to see why the situation escalated the way it did. The original owners were not trying to punish anyone. They were trying to guarantee that the parking spaces they had paid for would be available when they arrived after a long drive. But entitlement rarely responds to reasonable signage.

Research from Cornell and Harvard psychologists Emily Zitek and Alexander Jordan found that people who score high on measures of entitlement are less likely to follow posted instructions than everyone else, and the deciding factor is not fear of punishment but a private sense that the rule itself is unfair to them personally. Psychologist Jane Adams, writing in Psychology Today, summarized the finding this way: entitled participants would rather absorb a real cost themselves than comply with a restriction they had decided did not apply to them.

That insight fits almost too neatly here. The guests forging plate numbers and blocking the gate were not confused. They had decided, consciously or not, that a rule protecting someone else’s paid-for property was simply inconvenient to them, and therefore optional. It explains why clear signage, direct texts, and even a first round of towing did not stop the second wave of violations. For people wired toward entitlement, getting caught once rarely reads as a lesson. It reads as bad luck.

There is a small silver lining buried in the chaos. By the pool, the man met a UK family who had been towed the day before and were, surprisingly, at peace with it. Airbnb had already processed a partial refund for their stay and a full refund for the towing fee, so the man offered them his own empty second spot for the rest of the week. Not everyone in this story turned out to be an adversary.

The rest of it has hardened into something closer to a standoff. Fresh signs went up. The gate now stays closed. A lawyer has been looped in after renters started handing the man’s private phone number to police and city officials, seemingly without a second thought about whether that was even legal.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

Reddit had plenty to say about the update. Most commenters sided firmly with the original poster, pointing out that a warning sign and a locked gate are not exactly complicated concepts, and that Airbnb hosts advertising amenities they do not control are the real source of the mess.

OfficialBroccoliRob − NTA. Airbnb has made parking a nightmare in a lot of places. The real issue is owners advertising amenities they don't control.

sunrisemisty − You warned them, they didn't listen. Tough s__t for them.

spilledteacups − So to clarify the spots are clearly marked? I don’t think you are the a__hole here.

If your answer is that the spots were clearly marked and it sounds like you gave them plenty of notice. I don’t see the issue. I think this is the...

redpoppy42 − NTA. If I saw a parking sign in a language I didn’t understand, I would either figure it out to see what it said or just not park...

ReliefOpposite6642 − airbnb is destroying our community. good for you for getting them towed

Designer_Thought2907 − NTA, what are they gonna sue for? You getting illegally parked cars towed?

teresajs − NTA Airbnb owners should not be advertising parking that they don't own.

Talk to your co-owners about having other cars towed regularly from your shared lot.

ShesQuackers − And this is why our copro banned Airbnb and the like at our last assemblée générale. We're in the south too and it's a plague in our already...

Chance-Contract-1290 − NTA. Not your fault that some people don't learn until not learning starts to get expensive.

A smaller thread debated whether he was now overcorrecting by shutting the gate on legitimate visitors too. The general mood, though, was somewhere between amused and outraged on his behalf.

desertboots − NTA. Righteous response.

(Grammar if you want the advice: so we do buyed it last year = so we did buy it last year (auxiliary past tense, the verb "do" [faire] plus the...

What started as one man protecting a parking spot he legally owns has turned into a small case study in how quickly entitlement escalates once it senses no real consequence is coming. He did not ask for a war with strangers. He asked for six numbered spaces to be respected. Was the second round of towing simply enforcing a boundary that should never have needed enforcing twice, or has this become a fight nobody involved can back down from gracefully?
