Teen Loses His Luggage Space While Family Expects 32 Hours of Vacation Babysitting

in Social Issues

A 15-year-old teenager is upset because a family vacation to Cancun has started with arguments over luggage space and packing decisions.

Each family member was supposed to have their own suitcase with a 40-pound limit and a carry-on, but instead of everyone staying within their allowance, extra items from younger siblings and other family members were moved into the teenager’s luggage.

The biggest frustration was losing space in his carry-on for his Xbox. He explains that he did not want it because he planned to ignore the family trip and play games constantly, but because he expects to spend several hours each day babysitting his younger sisters in the hotel room while his parents go out, he wanted something to do during that downtime.

He feels it is unfair that unnecessary items, like his younger sister’s large panda squishy, were prioritized over something he personally wanted to bring.

A teenager gets frustrated when family packing rules leave no room for his belongings, while he expects to babysit on vacation

'AITA for being pissed about how my family packed for our 8-day Cancun trip?'

We’re going to Cancun for 8 days and the whole packing situation has pissed me off since before we even left.

Each of us gets a suitcase with a 40 pound limit, plus our carry on. I wanted to pack my own suitcase because I know what I actually want and...

Also keep in mind I’m almost 15, so I’d like to have some privacy with my own stuff

instead of everyone going through my bags, moving things around, and deciding what I can and can’t bring.

The problem is everyone else packed so much stuff that it started overflowing into mine.

Somehow my 7 year old sister had over 40 pounds of stuff packed,

so instead of cutting down what she was bringing, stuff started getting moved into my suitcase.

Then it went beyond that and they started putting other people’s stuff in my personal carry on too.

What really annoyed me was that I wanted to bring my Xbox in my carry on,

but apparently there wasn’t enough room because of everything else we had to bring.

Meanwhile my sister was able to bring this huge panda squishy that weighs around the same as my Xbox.

So somehow there’s room and weight for that, but my Xbox is where we draw the line.

And I’m not trying to sit on my Xbox for the entire vacation.

I’m probably gonna spend a decent amount of time stuck in the hotel room watching my younger sisters while my parents go out and do stuff.

I wanted it for when I’m sitting in the room with nothing to do.

I got pissed about all of this and now everyone’s mad at me and acting like I’m making the trip miserable.

I understand it’s a family trip and sometimes we’re gonna have to share luggage space.

But if we each have a 40 pound suitcase plus a carry on, I don’t think it’s fair that other people can pack over their limit and bring a bunch...

then use my suitcase AND my carry on to make it work while I’m the one who has to leave my stuff behind.

We already left so it’s not like anything can be changed now. I’m just pissed that I couldn’t really pack my own bags,

other people’s stuff took up the space I had, and I couldn’t bring something I actually wanted while other unnecessary stuff still came.

EDIT: Some of you seem to be missing a pretty important part of this.

I’m going to be watching my younger siblings in our hotel room for at least 4 hours a day while my parents are out.

Over an 8-day trip, that could be 32+ hours sitting in the room babysitting.

I’m not mad because I can’t play Xbox every second of a family vacation. I wanted to bring it because

I’m going to have hours every day where I’m required to stay in the room and need something to do while I’m watching them.

Family conflicts often become emotional not because of the object at the center of the argument, but because of what that object represents. A suitcase, a gaming console, or a few extra pounds of luggage may seem small from the outside, but they can represent fairness, independence, and whether someone feels respected.

In this situation, the OP was not simply upset about leaving behind an Xbox. He felt that his personal space and choices were treated as less important than everyone else’s needs.

The emotional conflict comes from a teenager trying to balance being part of a family with wanting some control over his own belongings. The OP understands that family trips require compromise, and he is not arguing that nobody should share anything. His frustration comes from feeling that the compromise was one-sided.

Other family members exceeded their luggage limits, but instead of reducing their belongings, the extra items were moved into his designated space. That created the feeling that his suitcase and carry-on were considered backup storage rather than his own possessions.

The Xbox also became symbolic because it represented something beyond entertainment. Since he expected to spend significant time supervising younger siblings in the hotel room, it represented having something enjoyable and personal during those hours.

A different perspective is that this conflict reflects a common challenge when teenagers become old enough to want independence but are still treated as children within family decisions. Parents may see shared luggage as a practical problem that needs a quick solution, especially when traveling with multiple children.

However, teenagers often experience those decisions differently because personal belongings and privacy become connected to developing independence. The issue may not have been the extra items themselves, but the lack of acknowledgment that his space and time also had value.

Psychologist Laurence Steinberg has studied teenage development and explains that adolescence is a period when young people naturally seek greater autonomy and independence. He notes that allowing appropriate responsibility and decision-making helps teenagers develop confidence and a stronger sense of identity.

This perspective helps explain why the OP reacted strongly. From the family’s viewpoint, moving items between bags may have seemed like a simple logistical decision. From the OP’s viewpoint, it communicated that his preferences could be overridden whenever someone else had a greater need.

The disagreement was not really about choosing an Xbox over family time. It was about feeling that his responsibilities were increasing while his ability to make choices for himself was decreasing.

Ultimately, family vacations require flexibility, but fairness still matters. A teenager who is expected to help with younger siblings, adjust plans, and share space is still allowed to have personal boundaries and interests.

The healthiest solution would be recognizing that being part of a family does not mean one person’s needs should automatically become the easiest ones to sacrifice.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters supported OP’s right to use their own luggage space

bbbbears − NTA, and these comments are insane. You’re old enough to have your own suitcase and pack what you want to pack.

Others should’ve packed less. I’m not sure how people are missing that you’re going to be forced to babysit for a good portion of the time.

I truly don’t understand some people’s attitudes here “oh it’s a free vacation when you contribute you can decide”

as if OP isn’t being forced to go and to also be on babysitting duty and can’t even bring what they want.

Editing to add: if OPs parents want free babysitting on this vacation that’s obviously more for them than their kids,

they should compensate for said babysitting. Get the kid a switch or steam deck as a thanks for watching the littler kids, problem solved.

If OP is gonna be parentified, the least they can do is to not steal OPs luggage space to use for other kids,

and to allow them some form of entertainment while they’re out and about and OP is babysitting.

Content-Valuable-489 − Take out whatever someone else puts in yours.

You deserve your 40# space, just as much as they do; what they're doing is just plain RUDE! No need to flaunt what you're taking out - just take it...

These users focused on possible parentification and forced babysitting

Over-Method-1216 − From a Mum of teens: NTA at your age you should be allowed to pack what you want.

Especially considering the forced babysitting. Only check of bag should be to make sure you didnt pack any banned or not allowed items for safety.

Your 15, I'd be TA about it on purpose and tell them I won't be babysitting.

I won't be confined to a room for 4 hours a day with nothing to do because of your poor choices, sorry not sorry.

Now watch reddit downvote me to hell for telling you to not be parentified lol

Specialist_Mall8177 − For all the people getting on this kid about wanting his xbox. ...

if you had to babysit your sisters everyday for a few hours in a hotel room wouldnt you want something to do besides stare at the tv in mexico.

And before you start about spending time with his sisters.

..put yourself in his shoes and try to remember being 15. The parents were unfair to put sisters needs over his.

Haunted_Stormbird − I feel like most of the people commenting here are being extremely judgemental

and didn't listen to what you said about 5 hours of babysitting in the hotel room each day.

It is like all these people are so biased against the X box to begin with and they are imagining you playing it all day

and night instead of enjoying your vacation and going out and doing stuff.

Meanwhile, your parents have already told you that you will NOT be going out every day and doing stuff.

You will be forced to stay in the hotel room and babysit. It's actually cruel to fill your luggage with everyone elses extra stuff

and not let you bring the one thing that would have made your forced labor on your parents tropical holiday bearable.

These commenters felt everyone was overpacking and criticized bringing an Xbox

SamScoopCooper − ESH. I don’t think anyone in your family needs 40 pounds worth of luggage for a week long trip.

Your parents should cut back on the number of things your sister is bringing rather than putting them in your bag.

However, there’s absolutely no need for you to bring an XBox on vacation.

A handheld device like a Switch is fine but an Xbox is ridiculous

Wise_Session_5370 − Who in the name of jumping jack balls needs a 40lb suitcase plus a carry on for 8 days in a hot place? ESH

Psychological_Lime14 − Very f**ked up that your parents would bring you along

with to spend a large chunk of your day in the hotel room instead of enjoying vacation. .

This user sympathized with being left behind during family trips

itchy-n-scratchy19 − NTA- Dude, that sucks. I was a kid that got left in the motel room for hours on end with zero entertainment on "family" vacations.

I did not have siblings to watch so my heart really goes out to you. What in the world are you going to do to entertain a small child while...

I'm sure they are getting some type of tablet or whatever.

I came here to say not ever in any vacation have I ever had to give up part of my suitcase for someone else's crap.

That's kinda wild of your family to do, I think. I mean I was raised in the 80s and 90s by abusive alcoholics.

Hell, I had to run away from home at 16 when I was almost killed via a beating.

I came to, to a view of my grandmother in a towel screaming at my aunt to let me go that she was k__ling me.

So I know abuse and bad parenting. And even I never had to share my suitcase. .. geeze.

This commenter noted that OP may only own one gaming console

Emotional_Kick_6649 − i feel like i’m the only person in comments who assumes a 15 yr old only has 1 console.

lots of “just bring a switch” but i would bet that xbox is OP’s only console

Should his parents compensate him or reduce the childcare once they return? How can families expect teenagers to act responsibly while denying them reasonable control over their own time and belongings?
