Woman Arrives 38 Minutes Early Again, Then Accuses Her Friend Of Punishing Her

Most people think being early is polite. But when “early” consistently means showing up half an hour before the agreed time, it can create a whole new kind of frustration for the person doing the hosting.

One Reddit user found herself in exactly that situation with a close friend who prides herself on never being late. The problem is that she regularly arrives between 25 and 40 minutes before the agreed time and expects to be welcomed inside immediately.

After several conversations failed to change the habit, another early arrival led to an awkward standoff outside the front door. Scroll down to see why one simple timing dispute has people debating whether being too early is just as inconsiderate as being late.

'Six-thirty is not “sometime after six”: am I wrong for leaving my friend outside when she arrived thirty-eight minutes early again?'

My freind is never late. Instead, she usually arrives twenty-five to forty minutes early and expects me to open the door immediately.

I have explained several times that I might still be working, showering or getting things ready. Yesterday we agreed on 6:30.

She rang my doorbell at 5:52 while I was finishing a work call, so I did not answer until 6:20.

She had been sitting outside and said I deliberately punished her for respecting my time.

I said arriving extremely early without asking is just being late in the opposite direction.

A mutual friend thinks I should have let her wait inside because I was home anyway.

I think repeatedly arriving before I am ready makes the agreed time meaningless. Am I wrong?

Time boundaries can feel trivial until someone repeatedly treats them as optional. Being early is usually considered polite, but arriving so far ahead that the host must stop working, dressing, cooking, or preparing simply shifts the inconvenience in the opposite direction.

In this situation, the OP was not punishing her friend for punctuality. She was protecting the meaning of an agreed arrival time after explaining the issue several times.

The emotional conflict comes from two different definitions of respect. The friend appears to believe that early arrival proves reliability and consideration. Sitting outside for nearly half an hour may even have felt, to her, like evidence that she had made an effort not to be late.

The OP experiences the same behavior as pressure. A 6:30 invitation means she has until 6:30 to finish whatever she is doing privately. When the doorbell rings at 5:52, she suddenly becomes responsible for either abandoning her plans or feeling guilty while someone waits outside.

A fresh perspective is that chronic earliness can function much like chronic lateness when it forces other people to reorganize around one person’s timing. The issue is not the clock itself but who absorbs the consequences.

Someone arriving five minutes early can usually wait comfortably. Someone arriving thirty-eight minutes early without asking is effectively creating a new appointment time and expecting the other person to adapt.

That may not be malicious, but repeated behavior after a clear request becomes a boundary problem rather than a simple misunderstanding.

Clinical psychologist Meghan Marcum explains that respecting boundaries means recognizing another person’s stated limits even when those limits seem unnecessary from one’s own perspective.

Ignoring them can undermine trust and create resentment because the affected person learns that clearly expressing a need does not guarantee it will be respected. Verywell Mind similarly notes that healthy relationships depend on acknowledging boundaries rather than repeatedly testing them.

That insight makes the accusation of “punishment” especially important. The OP did not lock her friend outside after the agreed time.

She answered at 6:20, still ten minutes early. Her friend’s thirty-eight-minute wait resulted from choosing to arrive thirty-eight minutes before the invitation. Being physically home did not automatically make the OP socially available.

The realistic solution is consistency. Future plans could include a simple expectation: “Please don’t arrive more than five or ten minutes early unless you text first. I may not be able to let you in before then.” If the friend arrives at 5:50 for a 6:30 plan, she can wait elsewhere without resentment.

Friendship does not require immediate access simply because someone has reached the front door. Respecting another person’s time includes respecting the time before the appointment as well.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These Redditors said arriving very early is rude when it disrupts the host’s schedule

YoshiandAims − YNW You've talked about it. SEVERAL times. It's made no impact. When someone tells you there's a problem. .. you adjust.

It may be stupid or silly to you, but, recognize that it isn't for them. I'm habitually early, to allot for traffic, whatever.

However, if it's someone's home, I do not go near that door till 6:25-6:35.

I have a cook in my car, I'll get gas, I'll listen to music and gear up for a social event, browse reddit, answer emails.

No one has told me, there's been no conversations.

PreparationPast4685 − That is wildly rude of her. I often arrive early but I wait outside or somewhere else until the agreed upon time.

Icy_Pressure3086 − NTA. Being early is only polite when you wait somewhere else until the agreed time.

Showing up at someone’s door nearly forty minutes early and expecting immediate access just transfers the inconvenience to them.

You were still working, which is a perfectly normal thing to be doing before 6:30.

I probably would have sent a quick message saying, “I’m busy and can let you in at 6:20,”

but not answering the door while on a work call is hardly some calculated punishment.

Next time, tell her clearly that the door will not open before the agreed time unless she asks in advance.

If she chooses to arrive at 5:50 anyway, she can sit in her car, take a walk, or get coffee.

These commenters agreed that a few minutes early is fine, but 30 to 45 minutes is excessive

Babbott50-410 − As a person who is usually early, I sort of understand her thought process.

BUT being 45 minutes early is ridiculous. It sounds like you work from home and that you need the time to get everything picked up and tidy.

Your friend needs to be more mind full of everyone else's timeframes and not be so early.

OR, tell her a later time than everyone else, that way she won't be ridiculously early.

foxystevie08 − As someone who grew up in the military I firmly subscribe to ‘if you’re early you’re on time,

if you’re on time you’re late and if you’re late you’re very late’ But 40 minutes is ridiculous.

Anything more than 10 minutes is rude, as you don’t know what the person is doing or if they’re even home yet!

What if they’re planning to have a massive poo half an hour before your scheduled arrival time and don’t want you there? YNW

NatashOverWorld − I would prefer someone who was 10 minutes late over half an hour early.

She's not 'respecting your time' she's demanding you match her schedule. Don't give in. YNW

These users shared how early arrivals can interfere with work, preparation, and hosting plans

LaLunaLady1960 − My stepdaughter and her family did this to us last holiday season.

Calls an hour early with a "We're here! " We had just finished up with the kitchen work and I planned to get in the shower and get dressed when...

She said she knew her dad "wouldn't mind". He did.

So did I, who ended up hosting a holiday with thrown-on clothes, dirty hair and no makeup. Thanks, sweetie.

My solution was to let them know on the way out that I would not be cooking for holidays going forward.

I'm in my sixties with a serious illness and the last one who should be cooking is ME. Done with their inconsiderate behavior.

They are still welcome, of course, ON TIME, but I'm done making a meal after that fiasco of rude manners. You are not wrong. She has bad manners.

tomtink1 − Not wrong. I am sure your workplace would be less keen on you leaving meetings to open doors.

These Redditors suggested giving early guests chores or telling them a later arrival time

Seawolfe665 − Ive always put friends who arrive early to work. Oh! Youre early - can you please set up these tables while I finish what I was doing?

Can you please take this load of trash and recyclables out? Feed the pets, water the plants, wash the dishes - whatever needs doing.

Either they do it and we are both happy, or they stop coming around so early, and that works too.

ManyNanites − Not wrong. Boundaries are healthy. But you need to set explicit times with this person.

"Sometime after six" lets them interpret. Set an exact time and then only meet at the agreed-upon time.

Was leaving the friend outside until 6:20 unnecessarily cold, or was it the only way to make an ignored boundary finally mean something? And at what point does “early” stop being punctual and start becoming rude?
