Man Says He Won’t Carry His Wife Anymore, And Reddit Immediately Spots The Joke

Relationships often involve changes over time, and couples usually expect to support each other through difficult seasons. But sometimes a change becomes so significant that it affects things that were once a normal part of the relationship.

OP is facing that reality with his wife after years together. When they first met, they shared an active lifestyle and enjoyed playful moments that became part of their relationship. One of those traditions involved OP physically carrying his wife, something that was once easy and affectionate between them.

Over time, however, circumstances changed, and OP no longer felt capable of doing it safely. When his wife recently asked him to do it again, OP refused, believing he was being honest rather than hurtful.

The conversation quickly turned emotional, and what seemed like a simple request became a much larger conflict involving insecurity, expectations, and outside opinions from family members. Read on to see why OP is questioning whether he handled the situation wrong.

A husband refuses to carry his wife after major weight gain, sparking hurt feelings and family backlash over love, limits, and expectations

'AITA for not wanting to carry my wife anymore because she gained 250 pounds?'

I (40m) have been married to my wife "Amy" (27f) for 3 years, together for 6. When we first met, she was a college athlete and was very active and...

At the time, she weighed 110 pounds soaking wet.

After she graduated and started working, her lifestyle became more sedentary and she started to put on a few pounds.

That didn't bother me at first, but the weight continued to build up over time.

Don't get me wrong, I've always thought she was beautiful, even with the weight.

Heck, by the time we had our wedding, she was about 50 pounds heavier.

I didn't think it would go too far, but then her dad suddenly died and her coping mechanism became food, food, food.

Her weight skyrocketed and, as of now, she's 360 pounds.

During the early days of our relationship, she loved me carrying her, whether it was bridal style to bed before s__ or jumping on my back.

I liked doing that too, but obviously not anymore because she's far too heavy for me to manage.

I thought she understood that, but for some reason, she asked me to carry her to bed the other night. I was a bit taken aback and said I couldn't.

She suddenly became upset and demanded why. I said you know why. She said no tell me. I finally sighed and said honey you're too heavy for me to lift.

You're more than double my weight (I'm 175 lbs, fyi).

She started to cry and said that she was aware of that, but she hoped that I would at least try for old time's sake.

I honestly would, but I really don't think I can do it.

She told me to sleep on the couch so I did and I woke up to a bunch of family member texts telling me I was being f__phobic and a...

Sometimes the hardest relationship conversations are not about whether someone is loved. They are about accepting that love does not remove reality. In this story, the painful moment was not simply a husband refusing to lift his wife. It was a collision between one person’s desire to feel loved the way they once did and another person’s physical limits.

The emotional weight behind Amy’s request appears to be much deeper than being carried to bed. For years, being picked up may have represented playfulness, attraction, security, and the feeling of being desired.

After gaining significant weight following a devastating loss, she may have been hoping for reassurance that she was still the same loved person underneath the changes. When her husband said he could not lift her, she may have heard rejection rather than a statement about physical ability.

At the same time, the OP’s refusal is not automatically a statement about his wife’s worth or attractiveness. Carrying another adult requires strength, balance, and safety.

A person weighing significantly more than the lifter creates a genuine physical risk, even when there is love and good intention involved. The question is not whether Amy deserves affection. The question is whether affection requires someone to do something physically unsafe or unrealistic.

A different perspective is that both partners may be grieving something. Amy may be grieving her former body, her athletic identity, and the version of herself who felt carefree and physically confident.

The OP may be grieving the loss of certain shared activities and the changes that have affected their relationship dynamic. Neither person is necessarily the enemy, but both are experiencing a transition they did not expect.

Psychologist Dr. Marisa Franco, who studies relationships and attachment, explains that many conflicts are intensified when people interpret a partner’s action as a statement about their value rather than considering the underlying need being expressed. Healthy communication often requires separating the behavior from the emotional meaning attached to it.

Research on body image and relationships also shows that acceptance and emotional support from partners can play an important role in helping people cope with changes in appearance and self-esteem.

That perspective suggests the most helpful response would not be a debate over whether the OP should have tried harder. The deeper conversation is about reassurance, grief, health, and how they can maintain physical affection in ways that work for both people. Carrying her may no longer be possible, but that does not mean tenderness has to disappear.

The family members calling the OP cruel may be focusing only on the emotional hurt while ignoring the physical reality. Likewise, the OP should be careful that the conversation does not become only about weight, because Amy’s request likely came from a desire to feel cherished rather than from simply wanting a ride.

Relationships change as people change. The strongest couples are not the ones who never lose old versions of themselves. They are the ones who find new ways to show love when life no longer looks the way it used to.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters identified the post as satire and discussed how it exaggerated common stereotypes about fat people

mario-dyke − Unfortunately this felt unrealistically nice to the wife compared to real posts about fat women :/

Edit: This is a joke forum that mocks the bad takes and fake posts on r/aitah and similar forums.

Many posts on that forum portray fat women as evil, stupid caricatures so that skinny people can feel good about mocking and shaming them.

This post was trying to imitate those posts to be funny, but honestly, people are often so cruel to fat people that it felt unrealistically "kind. "

Anyway, fat people are cool and hot and good friends and partners and deserve happiness and respect ✌️

last-rose-ofsummer − Am I allowed to break character in the comments?

If not, I'll delete this comment, but since I keep getting serious comments, I'll say it loud and clear: it's a SHITPOST. It's *fake*.

Admittedly, I made the OP character too kind (thanks for the feedback, by the way), but this is my first shitpost here so I'll try to make them meaner next...

(Also, I really am a single 23-year-old bi woman, in case you've gone through my post history)

These Redditors pointed out clues that the story was fake or designed as ragebait

KeremyJyles − Detailing the age gap then never referencing it. ..perfect move, it's one of my personal favourite tells for those ragebait posts.

jvnya − Omg I have to read the sub before I read the title IT GETS ME EVERYTIMEEEE I cant take anything seriously on here anymore

unknownfena − So many people thought this was real 😅

These commenters continued the joke by giving absurd “solutions” to the ridiculous situation

TobblyWobbly − Try going down on all fours and carry her on your back. That might be easier. She might even find it exciting and want to add a bridle...

jokennate − INFO: which items of furniture have been broken by you standing on them while trying to carry her and has she agreed to replace them?

nyet-marionetka − YTA. Recruit her boyfriend, do a team lift. If she doesn’t have a boyfriend, find one for her.

These Redditors mocked the unrealistic expectations in the story through exaggerated sarcastic responses

startartstar − Well I know an easy way she can lose 175 pounds By breaking up with your weak ass.

Ooooooo the crowd around me that's watching me type this is clapping and we're all laughing at you-

Super-Yam-420 − YTA. You didn't even try! If you broke your a__le or shin snapped she could have seen you really put her desires over your physical needs.

Then she could have berated you for being so weak still your fault even then! So selfish!

Do you think fake AITA posts can still reveal real social issues, or do they create more confusion than conversation? Have you ever spotted a viral story that seemed too dramatic to be true? Share your thoughts below.
