Man Keeps Taking Rented Parking Spot, So Neighbor Finally Blocks Him In

Parking disputes can bring out the worst in people, especially when one person believes a space is “theirs” because of years of habit while another person is paying for that exact privilege. What starts as a small inconvenience can quickly turn into a battle over respect, boundaries, and entitlement.

The original poster (OP) rented a private parking spot in a city where finding parking is already stressful. However, an older man from the nearby church kept blocking the space despite being asked not to, and his response only made OP more frustrated.

After another long day, OP decided to handle the situation differently by blocking the man’s car instead. Now, OP is asking whether this was a fair way to make a point or if they crossed a line. Scroll down to see what Reddit thought about this parking feud.

'# AITAH for blocking in an older guy's car after he kept blocking my paid parking spot?'

I live in a city where parking is a nightmare. If you get home late, you're usually driving around for 10–15 minutes looking for a spot.

A parking space across the street from my house became available to rent, so I took it.

It wasn't cheap, but I drive a lot for work, so having a guaranteed place to park was worth every penny.

When I rented it, the owner warned me that one member of the congregation of the  church next door occasionally parked in the driveway.

He gave me the guy's phone number and told me that if it ever happened, I could just call or text him and he'd move his car. I figured it...

The first time it happened, About 20 minutes before I had to go, I called him. No answer. I texted him. No answer.

About 10 minutes before I absolutely had to be on the road, I went into the church to find him.

He was praying and basically ignored me until I finally got his attention. Instead of moving his own car, he handed me his keys.

I asked, "You want me to move it?". He said yes.

I didn't have time to argue or make a scene in the middle of church, so I moved his car myself.

What really bothered me was that there were other parking spots available.

Most of the times I've seen him park there, he hasn't actually needed to block the driveway.

He's older and not in the best shape, so maybe he wanted the shorter walk, and I was willing to be understanding,

especially for when it wasn't an inconvenience, so I let it go.

About a week later, I had to leave very early in the morning. Since I didn't know what time he'd arrive, I texted him ahead of time and said,

"Hey, I need to leave by this time tomorrow. Please don't block the driveway.". His entire response was six words:. "Make sure to leave on time."

That really annoyed me and i kind of went from 0 to 100. I replied, "Let me be very clear. If you block me again, I will have you ticketed...

This is the parking space I pay for, and you're not going to tell me when I can come or go from my own property."

That morning, he either wasn't there yet or decided not to block me.. Fast forward to today.

I had just driven almost six hours and finally got home. In my city, we have alternate-side parking for street cleaning.

There were no open spots on the correct side of the street for the next day, meaning if I parked elsewhere, I'd have to wake up early just to move...

Meanwhile, he was once again parked in my rented driveway.

He could have parked elsewhere. There was parking across the street, on the side where tomorrow it was cleaning.

Instead, he blocked the space that I pay for.. So I parked Infront of him and blocked him in.

A little while later, another member of the congregation called me, not the guy himself, and asked if I could move my car by a certain time.

I said no. I had just gotten home, I was relaxing, and I had already warned him not to block me anymore.

The response I got was, "He's been parking there for 30 years."

I said, "Great. Then he can pay for it. I'm the one paying for this parking space now.

I was nice enough to let it slide before, and then he told me to 'leave on time' instead of simply not blocking me."

I told them I wasn't moving my car that night and that he could get his car tomorrow.

To be clear, if he had called me himself and was standing by his car ready to leave, I probably would have gone out and moved mine.

What I wasn't willing to do was sit around waiting for him, then move my car,

and then pull back into my own driveway just because he wanted to leave whenever it was convenient for him.

So, AITA for blocking him in until tomorrow when I feel like It would have been okay to have just had him ticketed and/or towed?

Disclosure: On my last post, a lot of people called me out for having AI write it. I did use AI to help organize it, but it wasn't a made-up...

I literally talked into my phone for a few minutes straight, had AI clean up the grammar and organize my rambling, made a few edits myself, and posted it.

I genuinely don't know how some people can sit down and write out long stories from scratch, I don't have the patience for it.

If that makes me an a__hole, I'll own it, but that's not what I'm asking about here.

A shared space can become a surprisingly emotional battleground because parking is rarely just about a vehicle. It is about access, fairness, and the feeling that someone else is ignoring your rights. Small inconveniences often become major conflicts when one person feels repeatedly disrespected.

In this situation, the OP was not simply upset about one car being in the way. The frustration came from a repeated pattern: paying for a private parking spot, giving the other person a chance to be considerate, and then receiving a dismissive response when asking for basic cooperation.

The older man’s history of parking there may have made him feel entitled to continue, but OP saw the situation differently: ownership and payment had changed the rules. The emotional turning point was likely not the blocked driveway itself, but the message that OP’s schedule mattered less than his convenience.

A different perspective is that this conflict shows how people can become attached to routines they have followed for years. The older man may not have viewed his actions as intentionally disrespectful because he had parked there for decades without consequences.

From his perspective, it may have felt like someone suddenly changed an arrangement that had existed for a long time. However, traditions or habits do not automatically create rights, especially when another person now pays for and depends on that space.

Psychologists who study conflict often explain that disputes escalate when people feel their needs are being ignored. According to psychologist Thomas Gordon, effective conflict resolution depends on recognizing both sides’ needs while clearly expressing boundaries.

His approach emphasizes that problems often become worse when people move from solving the issue to defending their position or trying to win the argument. (Source: Gordon Training International – Conflict resolution and communication methods)

This perspective helps explain why the situation reached this point. OP initially tried a cooperative approach by calling, texting, and even moving the other person’s car. That showed flexibility.

The problem was that the arrangement depended entirely on OP absorbing the inconvenience. Once OP had repeatedly communicated the boundary and received a dismissive response, the relationship shifted from cooperation to enforcement.

Blocking the car may not have been the most diplomatic solution, but it was a reaction after other options had failed. OP was not preventing someone from using public parking; he was protecting access to a space he was paying for.

The deeper issue was the expectation that OP should continue accommodating someone who was unwilling to offer the same respect in return.

The lesson here is that boundaries often become necessary when politeness is mistaken for permission. Being understanding is generous, but it should not require someone to repeatedly sacrifice their own rights. A good neighbor or community member does not rely on another person’s patience forever; they recognize when a situation has changed and adjust accordingly.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors supported towing the car and believed repeated violations deserved consequences

AkkmanB − Just have it towed. NTA.

Sterlinghawk16 − yea don’t bother contacting him. have him towed

SokeSleezy − First of all i would of thrown the keys right back at him the first time and told him to get up and move his s__t. Second, tow...

lordwintergreen − NTA "He's been parking there for 30 years" "I don't f__king care. If he blocks me in or takes my spot again he'll be towed. Every single time....

These commenters enjoyed OP’s response and praised the creative handling of the parking conflict

Curly-Pat − NTA, also next time. As soon as you get home on a Friday, have a beer.

Tell him you could not move your car as under the influence. Have another beer, Sat and Sunday. That should do it. (I saw that on a similar post ages...

SafeWord9999 − Omg this is great, handled perfectly. UpdateMe

These users argued that paying for the parking spot gives OP priority over someone’s long-standing habit

Ok_Leg_1158 − Parking is at a premium in your city. You solved the problem. The fact that the person who is renting it to you warned you is the real...

It's HIS problem. You are paying to rent a space. He KNOWS that someone else has been using it but didn't address the problem.

You are NTA, and I would contact him and ask what a permanent solution is.

TaxDense1339 − "He's been parking there for 30 years. " Yeah, but not 31 years because it ends now.

If anyone else from the Church messages you again point out that taking what isn't rightfully your is stealing

and I believe that most religions have something to say about that kind of behavior. ..

EtherealMoonGoddess − It's the fact that he is being disrespectful and then the church members try to justify it by saying he parked there for 30 years. ..

But you pay for the spot? ? NTA This could have been handle much differently.

InfoSecPeezy − NTA, this is bs entitlement. People like this only learn the hard way.

Was blocking the car a fair response, or should the driver have gone straight to towing? Should long-term habits ever outweigh someone’s legal right to use their own rented space? Share your thoughts below!
