She Moved Back Home After College and Asked for One Simple Boundary: Privacy

Moving back in with your parents after university can be complicated. You may be an adult with your own routines, responsibilities, and expectations, but your parents may still see you as the child who once lived under their rules.

For this 22-year-old woman, that tension became especially difficult because she had spent years living independently at university. She had her own flat, worked from home, and relied on having a private space where she could relax and focus.

After moving back home, she quickly realized that privacy was going to be harder to find than she expected.

'AITAH for locking my door overnight at my parent’s house?'

Hello lovely people of reddit. I usually lurk here but the time has finally come for me to make a post of my own, because I can’t tell if I’m...

I (22F) just recently graduated and moved home from university a month ago. I love my family, but we have our issues just like anyone, and the one thing I...

I can’t seem to ever fully unwind or focus on my work unless I know I have a guaranteed uninterrupted space. I’m already really struggling with feeling like I’ve only...

For context, before I moved out, I got walked in on all the time (including while changing and sleeping).

I believe my mum just feels entitled to access my room at any point no matter the reason, but my dad and grandma both have dementia.

I’ve been working part time from home for 6 years running my tuition business, and they all constantly walk in while I’m on call with students.

I also want to add that this isn't just about wanting to be able to shut my door. I'm neurodivergent, and one of the biggest things I've struggled with since...

At university, my room was genuinely a private space where I could decompress and be myself without having to constantly monitor whether someone might walk in.

At home, I feel like I'm always "on" because I know my mum can enter at any point. She knows this is something I struggle with, which is why having...

So I told my parents I needed a lock on my door at home. My mum agreed, but then ‘lost the key’ for the last 2 weeks. So I ordered...

When it arrived, she opened it, came into my room and woke me up to ask what it was. When I explained it, she said ‘Oh, but that’s just for...

Not to use here?’. I replied ‘Well it is for here until you find that key’. Guys I kid you not - she found the key in under 60 seconds.

So anyways - I’ve been locking my door at night when I sleep, when I change, and when I just want some privacy to do some work or chill.

This morning, I woke up to frenzied banging on my door. I obviously jolted awake, rushed to unlock the door, and hopped back into bed (because I sleep n__ed).

My mum was screaming that she’s going to take away the key if I continue to lock my door for anything but changing.

I asked her what was so urgent?? She said ‘I wanted to remind you we have people coming for lunch’. I said ‘… ok so why were you banging like...

and she denied it. So I said ‘Just to clarify.. you woke me up like that just to scream at me for locking my door?’. She just went on a...

On her side of things: she keeps saying that it’s unsafe to lock the door overnight if there is a fire (I am a deep sleeper). Also, she bought me...

On my side of things: I’m an adult, and I don’t think privacy is an unreasonable ask. But as usual she says ‘while you’re under my roof, it’s my rules....

Before people ask - yes, I do plan to move out, but I’d like to be more financially secure before I do so (namely secure full time graduate employment, and...

I've already been applying for jobs throughout my final year, and most of the graduate roles I'm currently applying for don't even start until summer 2027.

Even once I have a full-time job, it'll realistically take me another year or two to build enough savings to move out securely. I'm therefore looking at a couple years...

Move out” isn't a realistic immediate solution to the problem.. So reddit - AITA for locking my door overnight?

Edit/Mini Update: Thank you so much to everyone that reassured me that I’m not going crazy for wanting this privacy! I had a discussion with my mum over lunch while...

We’ve settled on the following: I’m allowed to lock my room at any point during the day!

As for the night - someone commented that if not for fire safety, she’d come up with another reason to have it unlocked at night, and you were right. A

s some people advised, I suggested installing a fire alarm inside my room, specifically ones made for people that are hard of hearing. She then pivoted to ‘it’s for any...

What if you have a heart attack in your room!’ 😭 So we’ve settled on this: for the next week, I’ll be leaving my door unlocked overnight only. If anyone...

She’s still not happy with that but I guess we’re going to have to see how it goes. At the end of the day I do still need to live...

My secret backup plan is to get a rubber door stop - technically, if she stays true to not coming into my room while I’m asleep, she should never even...

She Just Wanted Her Bedroom to Be Private

OP had recently graduated from university and moved back in with her parents about a month earlier.

She loved her family, but she had always struggled with people entering her room without warning. Before university, her mother had walked in while she was changing or sleeping, and family members regularly interrupted her while she worked.

That was particularly difficult because OP is neurodivergent.

At university, her bedroom had been more than somewhere she slept. It was the one place where she could completely decompress, stop masking, and feel like she did not have to constantly monitor what was happening around her.

Back at home, she felt like she was always “on.”

She also worked part-time from home and had been running her own tutoring business for years. Her father and grandmother both have dementia, meaning they sometimes entered her room while she was speaking with students.

So OP asked her parents for something she considered simple:

A lock on her bedroom door.

Her mother initially agreed.

Then she somehow “lost” the key for two weeks.

Eventually, OP ordered a temporary lock herself.

When it arrived, her mother opened the package, entered OP’s room, woke her up, and asked what it was.

OP explained that she planned to use it until her mother found the missing key.

Less than a minute later, the key suddenly appeared.

The Lock Became a Battle

Once OP had access to the lock, she began using it.

She locked the door when she was sleeping, changing clothes, working, or simply wanting some uninterrupted time.

Her mother was unhappy.

One morning, OP woke up to frantic banging on her bedroom door. She rushed to unlock it, only to discover that her mother wanted to remind her that they had guests coming for lunch.

That was it.

There was no emergency.

OP questioned why she had been woken so abruptly, and her mother denied banging on the door before launching into another argument about the bedroom lock.

Her mother’s position was essentially that locking the door was unacceptable because it was unsafe, particularly in the event of a fire. She also reminded OP that it was her house and that OP could move out if she did not like the rules.

OP understood that she was living under her parents’ roof.

But she also believed that being 22 did not mean she stopped having a right to privacy.

And moving out immediately was not realistic.

She had been applying for graduate jobs, but many of the positions she was targeting would not even begin until the following year. Even after securing full-time employment, she expected it could take another year or two to save enough money to move out safely.

So “just move out” was not a solution.

The Real Problem Was More Than a Door

For OP, the disagreement was not really about a lock.

It was about whether she could have one place in the house where she was not constantly accessible.

At university, she had learned what it felt like to have genuine control over her environment. Returning home meant suddenly losing much of that independence.

Her mother had even bought a sign saying “OP is tutoring” in an attempt to stop family members from disturbing her while she worked.

That gesture suggested her mother understood that OP needed uninterrupted time.

But OP felt that a sign was not enough.

She wanted the ability to close the door and know that nobody would enter without permission.

There was also the uncomfortable fact that OP’s mother had previously walked into the room while she was changing or sleeping.

For OP, that history made the request for a lock feel even more important.

She will never stop and it’s a pointless waste of time trying to unlock the secret that makes her respect you. She won’t.

OP Eventually Reached a Compromise

After reading the responses, OP spoke with her mother during lunch while guests were present, including a therapist.

They reached a temporary agreement.

OP could lock her door whenever she wanted during the day.

Nighttime was different.

For one week, she agreed to leave the door unlocked while sleeping. If someone entered her room during that period, she planned to begin locking it at night again.

Her mother still was not happy with the arrangement, but OP recognized that she had to continue living in the house for the foreseeable future.

She also quietly kept another option in mind: a rubber doorstop.

If her mother truly respected the agreement not to enter while OP was asleep, she would never need to know about it.

Final Thoughts

There is a difference between living under someone’s roof and surrendering all personal privacy.

OP understands that her parents own the house and that she needs to respect reasonable household rules. But she is also an adult who spent years successfully living independently.

Wanting to sleep without someone unexpectedly entering the room, change clothes privately, and work without constant interruptions does not seem unreasonable.

The bigger challenge may be learning how to maintain adult boundaries while temporarily living in a childhood home.

For now, OP has reached a compromise.

Whether that compromise lasts may depend on one simple question:

Will her mother finally respect the closed door?
