Woman Refuses to Adopt Teen Sister’s Baby, Then Discovers Her Family Created a Plan Behind Her Back

in Social Issues

A child should never become a punishment for someone else’s mistake, and one woman learned that the hard way when her family asked her to give up the life she built.

At 31, she had spent years being honest that motherhood was not something she wanted.

She had a fiancé, a career, and a life she loved. But when her 17-year-old sister became pregnant, her stepmother decided the answer was simple: she should adopt the baby.

Now she’s caught between protecting herself and feeling guilty about what might happen to her sister and the child.

'AITA for refusing to adopt my sister’s baby and take responsibility for her mistake?'

Last month we found out my (31F) sister (17) is 5 months pregnant, and

now my family has started pressuring me to adopt her baby.

For some context: I am a total people pleaser (slowly working on it). Since I

was 15, I’ve known I don’t want to have kids - I don’t have the patience or

desire to raise a child. I work full-time, have a fiancé (M36, who also doesn’t

want kids), and two lovely dogs. My parents divorced when I was little ,but

remain on friendly terms. My dad (57) remarried, and my sister is from that marriage.

I’m not sure how to describe our sisterly relationship. We’re not super

close, but she knows she can rely on me. I was the first person in our family

she told about her pregnancy. She knows I’ll support her, go with her to

doctor’s visits, etc. After a long conversation, she decided she would tell

her parents the same day and text or call me afterward. Well, she didn’t. I

thought she was stressed and just needed some time to cool down. The

next few days, she wasn’t picking up her phone or replying to texts - fine,

not that unusual but no Snaps? That was weird, since keeping her streaks

on Snapchat was suuuper important to her.

So, I called my dad. He almost immediately asked me to come over for

dinner with my fiancé. It was nice, but something felt off. Dinner started as

usual, and then it dropped. Her mom (46) said that I should adopt the baby.

Her reasoning was that she’s too old to have another child, has a career,

and that my sister “shouldn’t have her life ruined” by being a teen mom. I

was speechless, literally frozen. It felt like time stopped. I looked at my

dad, and he was avoiding my gaze. My fiancé saved me, took my hand, and

simply said, “We also don’t want our lives ruined.” My stepmom started

saying something, but we just left.

It’s been a month and a nightmare since then. My family is divided - and

most of them are not on my side. It makes me feel like a villain, like I caused

all this fighting just because I said no. My mom, my grandma (on my dad’s

side), and my fiancé are all supporting me. They know I’ve never wanted

kids, I’ve been clear about that for years. But my stepmom keeps saying

I’m being “selfish” and that I’m at the “perfect age to have a baby anyway.”

She keeps guilt-tripping me about how “it would be easier for me” than for

my sister, and that I’d be “saving two lives.” I'm trying to ignore her texts,

not going to block her, it'd only cause more problems. Her side of the

family is backing her up. My sister isn’t talking to me. Worst of all, my dad

has started echoing his wife - saying something along the lines “family

should help family.” For years he couldn’t accept my decision not to have

kids, and no joke, it was just last year he finally said, “I understand, you have my support.”

I’m terrified I’ll eventually give in just to stop the conflict. I don’t want to

ruin my own life just because my sister made a mistake. You know, take

responsibility for your actions? I love her and I’ll support her emotionally,

but I don’t want to become an unhappy mother and possibly lose my fiancé

just to fix her situation. But at the same time, I don’t want to feel

responsible if the baby ends up having a hard life, or be put up for

adoption.. So... AITA for refusing to adopt my sister’s baby and take

responsibility for her mistake?

P.S. I’m honestly really stressed about posting this, and I chose to post here

because I believe Charlotte’s community is understanding and kind..

UPDATE: You guys are amazing. I never expected to get so much help and advice. Thank you! ❤️

I don’t think I can reply to all comments and I don’t want anyone to feel

ignored, so here’s some more info:

* In our country, it’s illegal to terminate a pregnancy, but you can do it in

neighboring countries (we live in Europe). Back when we had that

conversation, she wasn’t sure what she wanted.

I can see that my sister reads my messages, and for some time I could see

her location on the Snapchat map. I even went to her school, but the staff

didn’t let me in (they’re not allowed to). Unfortunately, I don’t know her

class schedule. (Is it too much if I'll try to contact people who comment on

the Insta? I guess it's her friends. I only know names of two)*

* She got pregnant at a friend’s 18th birthday party. She said she got drunk

or someone put something in her drink and she doesn’t know who the

father is... (Yes, she got a talk from me about underage drinking)

* She’s the golden child – she has to have the best grades, extra classes,

clothes, everything. She’s under a lot of pressure from her parents, but she

also usually gets what she wants. She grew up to be a bit manipulative and

narcissistic, but when she realizes you see right through it, she’s sweet - the

kind of person you’d want to have a girls’ night with

My SM… She changed a lot, a full 180, after the marriage and became a

typical SM. I know for a fact she only "tolerates\"\* me because my dad

would never leave me. I don’t want to make her sound like a monster - she’s

polite at family meetings, but she always makes me feel weird, unwanted

* My dad is my biggest supporter. I owe him a lot, and we have a very close

bond. He once told me that if not for my sister, he’d leave his wife, but he

didn’t want her to end up like me (low self-esteem, too soft, people pleaser

etc.). He’s not pushing me as much, but I can tell he’s exhausted by all of this

* Our families meet on all holidays, birthdays, etc. For me, it’s normal - I’ve

always had two of every celebration (because of the divore). But now, with

my dad’s side, it’s also his wife’s family attending

* And yes, I did go to therapy. I have a complicated relationship with

happiness, that’s why I try to make everyone around me happy. I know

that’s not healthy, working on it. I don’t want to go into details, but last

year I took part in a clinical trial that was a real breakthrough, and now I’m much better

My fiancé is my miracle. He’s the first person who ever made me feel

beautiful. It might sound shallow, but it helped my self-esteem grow, and

he’s continued helping me since. If you know Depeche Mode song Enjoy

the Silence* \- he’s my silence. No words could ever make me feel more

loved than just being near him. I told him I’d never blame him if he left

because of this situation, but he said he’ll stay even if we end up with “a

noise and poop machine 24/7”

* I still feel guilty that my decisions will partly determine this child’s future.

I don’t want to have no contact with it, especially since it’s already a big

part of my life. But I also know I can’t be selfish - if it’s adopted and the new

parents don’t want contact, I’ll respect that.

You’ve made me feel strong enough not to give in (and I hope that won’t

change 😅). At first I started to break when my dad asked me to do it, but I

can’t always make everyone else happy and fix their problems - it’s simply impossible.

I’m planning to call my SM and try to arrange a meeting, just to make her

think she won, hopefully my sister will be there too. After that, I’ll block

her. I don’t need her in my life - she doesn’t want me there anyway. My

sister can come live with us if she’s kicked out, we'll figure it out. I'll not

leave her.

(Okay, I actually need advice on this last part - I can’t lose my dad and my

sister, but I’m afraid my SM might make that happen.). I'll update when I

can. Again, thank you for all your help ❤️

UPDATE 2: Hi again.

This is an update to my previous post (about my younger sister ‘asking’ me -

someone who chose not to have kids - to adopt her baby). I was advised to

post this as a separate update. I hope the tag fits, since it’s no longer really an AITA.

I think this will be the last update, and it’s a bittersweet one. The last few

years have been full of drama and honestly, I’m just tired. I wasn’t sure if I

should even write this, I rewrote it a few times to calm down and think

clearly but I feel like I owe you an update after all the support I received. A

lot has happened in a very short time…

I took your advice and didn’t meet with my SM, blocked her and her family.

Surprisingly, I haven’t felt bad about it.

Now, the drama… It happened just a few days after I made the first post. I

work from home and one day I got a text from my dad:

Dad: Hey sweetie, are you home?

Me: Yes

Dad: Will you allow me in so we can talk? I'm at your door.

It took me a minute, but I did. We've had a looong conversation. At one

point he mentioned my SM and it triggered one of the worst memories I have of her:

Me: I’ll never forget how she screamed at me when I put dishes into the

sink instead of the dishwasher… “I’ll not tolerate behavior like this! It’s not

a hotel!” Like I insulted her. - (when I was a teen we didn’t have a

dishwasher at home, so my mom and I used to put dishes in the sink to

wash later). Dad looked shocked, so I quickly added: It was a long time ago,

one of my first visits to your apartment …I thought I told you.

Dad: I remember SM crying when you left and telling me you intentionally broke a plate.

A few examples like that came up, showing what a lying manipulator she is.

I could see my dad getting angry. I’m not proud of it, but I wanted his cup

of anger to overflow. I called my grandma (his mom). She once told me how

after the marriage SM, started treating her like she was beneath her. I

wanted my grandma to say it again, out loud. It worked. Seeing something

break in my dad, almost making him cry, made me question what I did. But

in the end it was worth it.

Now, probably the most important part of our conversation:

Dad: Can you forgive me? I promise you won’t have to worry about SM

anymore. But please call your sister. She really needs you.

Me: …but she’s not picking up or texting me back.

As you can probably guess, he heard a different story. It hurt, a lot. I

believed we had a sisterly bond and trusted each other. It made me sad and

angry. My dad also told me she's stopped to school because everyone

found out she's pregnant and had a fight with her bestie. Later, when my

fiancé was listening to me blabbing about everything, we came up with an

idea: contact her best friend, ask her to reach out to my sis and arrange a

fake “make-up” meeting. Her friend has a very unique name so it was too

easy to find her. She was weirdly excited and asked to meet me the next

day because she had “something I’d definitely want to see”. I have no idea

what they argued about but this girl was definitely ready for revenge.

When we met, she showed me not just screenshots, but their whole

conversation on her phone (I checked the phone number and it really was my sister).

Well, she’s a mini version of her mom. She didn’t get too drunk, she “caught

the best guy at the party”, and it was her idea to ask me for “help". At first

she tried to get the morning-after pill, but the lady at the pharmacy didn’t

sell it to her (it was too late). So, she came up with this amazing plan to

push me to adopt the baby.

The whole fucking story she made up hurts even deeper, because I’ve been

in a similar situation, not the pregnancy, but ex abusing me. I told her

about it, believing she’s mature enough to understand and hoping she’d

learn from my mistakes.

We met at a cafe. If you could’ve seen her face when she saw me instead of

her friend... At first, she tried to sell me a story about how SM and our dad

didn’t let *her* contact me because *I* “left her alone”. I told her I had

spoken to our dad a few days ago. Lol, her face. She kept trying to lie until I

told her I knew everything. Then she broke down in tears and told me how

afraid she was etc. I believed her - I understand that fear. But why didn’t

she ask me for help earlier? Why lie? She blamed it all on fear. I told her it’s

not an excuse to ruin other people's lives, not just mine but the baby's too.

I guess she saw the show was over, so she threw a tantrum about how she

“didn’t want her life ruined either bla bla” and stormed off. Learning from

my mistakes, I recorded the meeting and sent it to our dad. Later he

showed it to SM. All 3 of them had a fight after, and what happened later I

feel responsible for. I know it’s not really my fault, but… When my dad was

away for work (his work is related to law and he has to travel sometimes),

SM and my sister went on a trip - to terminate the pregnancy. Apparently,

at the clinic they found out the baby had some big health issues. Since the

info came from SM, I find it hard to believe, even though she had some papers.

As for my sister, I didn’t block her. I don’t want her to be alone right now

and I still believe she can learn and change. I’m trying to support her but

with the boundaries. She can talk to me whenever she needs to, I’ll meet

her, but the lines are clear.

The one thing I’m happy about - the divorce! It’s happening. Finally. It feels

like the first step toward something good. The manipulators are living at

my dad’s apartment for now, but soon moving to SM’s place (she’s been

renting it out and in case someone feels sorry for her - she co-owns a small

company, makes a lot of money and deserves what she got) and my dad is

staying with us. We’ve got two spare rooms (I inherited my grandpa's huge

apartment), my dogs are super happy, my dad’s cooking the best meals and

most of all: my fiancé loves long, philosophical conversations and now he

has someone new at home to have them with.

I still feel conflicted. I feel sorry for the unborn child, but happy for my dad.

My sister will never have my full trust again, but I won’t leave her - it

wouldn’t do any good. There are so many questions, some with answers I

don’t know if I can believe.

Thank you for reading and, for all the comments on the first post,

especially the personal ones - you showed me perspectives I hadn’t seen,

helped me understand that my feelings were valid, and that protecting

myself and my partner wasn’t something to feel guilty about.

We’ve had some cloudy days here and today there’s sun. I hope you’ll have

simple moments like this too, the kind that makes you smile and feel that you can do it. ❤️

Many people struggle with saying no to family because love often comes with invisible expectations.

We are taught that family means sacrifice, forgiveness, and stepping in when someone needs help.

But there is a painful difference between supporting someone and being asked to give up your own future to solve their crisis.

In OP’s situation, the conflict was never simply about a baby.

It was about autonomy, identity, and the pressure placed on someone who had spent years being a people pleaser.

OP had been honest since she was young that motherhood was not the life she wanted.

She had built a future with a partner who shared that vision, created a home she loved, and found happiness in a life without children.

When her family suddenly expected her to become a parent, the request challenged not only her plans but also her right to decide what kind of life she wanted.

What makes this situation complicated is that OP clearly cared about her sister.

She was willing to attend appointments, provide emotional support, and even offer a safe place if needed.

Her refusal was not a rejection of her sister or the baby; it was a refusal to accept responsibility for a decision she did not make.

While many people viewed OP as being “selfish,” another perspective is that she was finally breaking a long-standing emotional pattern.

People who are used to keeping everyone happy often feel guilty when they create boundaries because they confuse discomfort with wrongdoing.

Saying no can feel cruel when someone has spent years believing their value comes from helping others.

This idea helps explain why OP felt trapped.

Her family was not only asking for practical help; they were placing the emotional weight of her sister’s pregnancy onto her shoulders.

The message was essentially that if she refused, she would be responsible for the consequences.

But a person cannot create a healthy family dynamic by sacrificing their own happiness out of fear and guilt.

At the same time, OP’s later decision to continue supporting her sister with boundaries shows an important distinction.

Protecting herself did not mean becoming heartless.

She could acknowledge her sister’s fear, mistakes, and struggles without accepting a role she never wanted.

The situation also reveals something important about family support: love should create safety, not pressure.

A family can encourage someone, guide them, and stand beside them, but it should not demand that one person surrender their future to repair another person’s choices.

OP’s journey shows that boundaries are not a sign of selfishness. Sometimes the most compassionate thing someone can do is be honest about what they can and cannot give.

A relationship built on guilt may keep the peace temporarily, but a relationship built on honesty has a much better chance of healing in the long run.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters warned that adopting the child could create long-term emotional complications and said OP should not enter a parenting role without truly wanting it

Maudlin-bo − As someone who was adopted by family. Please don't adopt.

You can't fake 'wanting'. Kids know when they are wanted. Someone will

tell that child how you had to be pressured. Family love telling an adopted

kid how lucky they are and whispering the truths to them. It's not you job

to fix your sisters mistakes. She made a choice.

Later if she goes on to have other children, how will that play out, will she

want to also tell you how to raise 'your/her' child. Will siblings be told. It's

not the easy fix it seems at this time. You are doing nothing wrong. You

have no reason to feel guilty.

patsy3711 − NTA and what a f***d life would that be for your sister and her

baby? Should she pretend to be the aunt? Let the child live a lie in a twisted

family constellation so your Stepmom is happy? Please don't give in to that madness.

Maybe you are a person that has trouble starting up for themselves, but

here you are the line of defense for your future, for your husband's future,

for your sister and her child. Block these manipulators, don't let them get

to you. You are absolutely in the right spot.

DeconstructedKaiju − If you did adopt this kid the second your little sister is

older her mom will pressure her into taking the kid back. They just want

you to babysit for a year or three. Mute anyone harassing you about this

and cut them out until they calm the f__k down. Which may never happen.

Including your father who is more concerned with keeping his wife off his

back than your feelings.

This group emphasized that family pressure does not make OP responsible for raising her sister’s child and that the parents should handle their own choices

Nieviel − NTA. you are under no obligation to adopt that kid "family needs

to help family" - okay, then these family member who say that can adopt the kid

Nsr444 − NO of course not. You know this. Tell yourself every morning in

the mirror if you need to. 46 is not too old to help a 17yr become a mom.

This is not your problem, do not let it become that. Adoption is a valid

option, stepping up herself is a valid option. You do not want or have to do this.

Sometimes there is just no talking sense into nonsense peoples stuck in

their own heads. Ignore them for now. Hopefully they come around

Perimentalpause − NTA, and there's absolutely no reason why you're the

designated support system for her choices. She had the baby. She can

either give it up for adoption or live with her choices. What about the

father? Where's he in any of this? Why does this all have to fall on you. "This

baby will have two parents, the mother and the father.

If neither of them are willing or able to manage it, then there's a system in

place for her to give it up. I am not that system. I don't want kids and I'm

not going to destroy my life because none of you understand

consequences or life choices. No means no. I love her, but I'm not her

mother or the baby's mom.

Or its dad. So either let the two people who got into this mess figure it out,

or look at adoption. The next person that mentions me doing it is getting

blocked. " That's the only part I think you're being dumb about. If they're

going to keep harassing you about it, block them. You don't need that.

They clearly don't give a s__t about you if they're behaving this way.

Hasagreatkid − NTA. Your step mother does not give a s__t about you, she’s

just trying to fix your sisters problem. There are plenty of people who want

a child that can adopt the child. My guess is she wants to play grandma so

she wants to keep it in the family Her wants do not matter. Block them if

you are concerned they will coerce you.

Now might be the time to see a therapist about your people pleasing

tendencies. Do not do this!

These users recommended stronger boundaries

Particular_Disk_9904 − You may have to go NC until she gives birth. I would

personally send then a lot of information about adoption agencies/options

for your sister, and then block them all. You are not obligated to take on

such a big request, it’s ridiculous of them to put this all on you.

You are not the AH you are just being taken advantage of and I am positive

they all assumed you would roll over and do it .

SweetBekki − NTA - I always get so pissed off when I read these kind of

posts. Your stepmother is out of line. She's 46 not on death's door. . this is

HER daughter so it's HER responsibility. It's ridiculous that she's allowed to

have a career but you're not? I think they're getting a little too comfortable

with seeing you as the "dependable one".

You need to go no contact with them for a while or at least until after the

baby is born. There was an option not to keep the baby but they did. They

could also put the baby up for adoption with a nice family but they didn't.

Something tells me their plan was to make you adopt the baby so that they

could still be in the baby's life and when your sister is old enough and has

her s__t together then she could just swoop in and get her child back.

Maybe if your stepmother and father are doing a better job at teaching

their daughter safe s__ then they wouldn't be in this position and if they

continue this family helps help nonsense especially the extended family

then THEY can adopt the baby.

As for your dad tell him that your stepmother is okay to ruin your life with a

baby you didn't want because you're not her daughter. F__k you right? But

does HE think it's okay for his wife to try and ruin your life in favour of his

other daughter? So what if you're at a right age to have a baby?

You still have a choice. . plus there are women out there that are having

kids at her age. You need to sit down with just your dad and have a heart to

heart without his wife next to him whispering in his ear.

If he's only agreeing with her to make his life easy at home so he doesn't

have to deal with her then he's an a__hole. If your sister is old enough to

spread her legs then she's old enough to raise the child she created.

New_Cheesecake9719 − Nta- go no contact. Stand your ground absolutely

do not give in. Ywbta if you do. Your dad his wife and your sister are failing you

These commenters questioned why responsibility was placed entirely on OP instead of the baby’s parents or other available support systems

Satori2025 − It takes 2 to make a baby. Where is your sister's boyfriend and his family? They can step up

Ok-Bus-9076 − NTAH how is it your responsibility? Why does everyone think

it would ruin their lives. There have been teen mom's who finished high-

school, went to college, built a career, while raising a child. Having a child

doesn't stop you from achieving your dreams. It will be hard but she has

people who can help. You can help.

I love spoiling my nephews and nieces and sending them home. Helped out

if my sister ran late, or something came up, that was unavoidable. You can

put boundaries on it. Considering what you wrote, I would. No to you

adoption for you. You don't want kids, not everyone does. That's your

decision. They have no right to put that on you.

You can offer help, and what you want that help to look like. If they can't accept that, then NC.

OP’s journey started with a heartbreaking demand: sacrifice the life she carefully built to solve someone else’s crisis.

But as the truth unfolded, she discovered the situation was far more complicated than anyone admitted.

Her choice not to adopt was never about abandoning her sister, it was about refusing to become a parent out of guilt and pressure.

Do you think OP handled the situation fairly by setting boundaries while still offering support, or should family obligations have played a bigger role?

How would you respond if your loved ones asked you to make such a life-changing sacrifice? Share your thoughts below!
