The Fake Tinder Match That Nearly Lured Her to an Abandoned Cabin

A woman thought she had matched with a well-known adult performer on Tinder. His profile was verified, his Instagram appeared legitimate, and he even seemed to know details about a mutual acquaintance.

Everything looked convincing.

Then, just 30 minutes before she was supposed to meet him at an Airbnb, one message from a friend completely changed the situation.

'Lets Not Meet- The time I matched with a 🌽 star…?'

I have a Let’s Not Meet/Catfish story that happened last September that ended in the cops telling me I’m a very lucky woman.

I was swiping on tinder and saw someone I recognized from the “🌽 industry” and we matched right away. His profile said that he was visiting for the week and...

Normally I stick to public meetups, but I have friends who have actually worked with him and everyone says he’s respectful and kind.

And, let’s be real, I was VERY attracted to this man and fully prepared for my first one-night stand 😂

His Tinder was verified. He offered to video chat before I came over, but I was in the middle of work.

His verified Instagram showed him on his motorcycle somewhere that looked like my state. I even mentioned a mutual friend he’d worked with and I called her by her real...

He knew exactly who I was talking about so I felt confident it was actually him.

I told a few friends about my plans, got ready and saw I had a few missed calls from my friend.

It was a 30 min drive so I grabbed my keys and was going to call her when I got on the highway.. then I got the message above from...

(I have an uncommon name so it’s scribbled out) My friend had messaged the real guy on Instagram and he said it wasn’t him and that he’s not on vacation...

I messaged him on tinder that I didn’t feel well and I was turning around. 20 mins later, he either deleted his profile or blocked me.

I told a cop friend about what happened and he said he was going to talk to someone at that police dept. The next day, they asked me to come...

Turns out there was no Airbnb lake house. It was an old, vacant cabin with the owner living out of state.

The place was trashed, there were multiple tire tracks in the yard, and they believe more than one person was waiting for whoever showed up.

They didn’t have enough to investigate further since technically no crime had occurred besides the break-in… but yeah. Absolutely terrifying in hindsight.

She Thought She Knew Who She Was Meeting

The woman was swiping on Tinder when she came across a profile belonging to someone she recognized from the adult entertainment industry.

They matched almost immediately.

His profile claimed he was visiting her area for the week and was looking for someone to show him around. Because she lived somewhere popular with tourists, the explanation seemed believable.

Normally, she preferred meeting people in public places. But she had friends who had actually worked with the man and described him as respectful and kind.

She was also very attracted to him and admitted she was excited about the possibility of a first casual encounter.

There were several reasons she believed the account was genuine.

His Tinder profile was verified.

His Instagram account appeared to be verified as well, and it showed him riding a motorcycle somewhere that looked like her state.

He even offered to video chat before they met.

She happened to be working and couldn’t take the call.

Then she tested the connection another way.

She mentioned a mutual acquaintance they supposedly both knew. She used the woman’s real name, which wasn’t publicly displayed on her verified social media accounts.

The Tinder match immediately seemed to know exactly who she was talking about.

At that point, OP felt confident she was dealing with the real person.

She had no idea how wrong that assumption might be.

Her Friend Suddenly Changed Everything

OP told several friends about her plans.

On the day they were supposed to meet, she got ready and prepared to drive to the location. The trip would take roughly 30 minutes.

She had already grabbed her keys when she noticed several missed calls from one of her friends.

Then she saw the message.

Her friend had contacted the real man through his verified Instagram account.

His response was terrifying.

He wasn’t visiting the area.

He wasn’t using Tinder.

And he had not created the profile OP had been talking to.

Suddenly, every detail that had made OP feel safe looked completely different.

The verified Tinder profile hadn’t protected her.

The Instagram connection hadn’t protected her.

Even the supposed mutual acquaintance hadn’t proven anything.

Someone had apparently gathered enough information about the real man to make a fake identity convincing.

OP immediately messaged the Tinder account and claimed she wasn’t feeling well and would have to turn around.

About 20 minutes later, the profile disappeared.

Either the account had been deleted or OP had been blocked.

She never found out which.

Then the Police Told Her How Lucky She Was

OP contacted a friend who worked in law enforcement and explained what had happened.

He spoke with officers in the area.

The following day, OP was asked to come to the police station and make an official report.

That was when the story became even more disturbing.

The supposed Airbnb wasn’t an Airbnb at all.

It was an old, vacant cabin whose owner lived out of state.

The property had reportedly been broken into and was in poor condition.

There were multiple tire tracks around the property.

Investigators believed more than one person may have been waiting for whoever showed up.

OP had been expecting a potentially awkward hookup at a rental property.

Instead, she may have been heading toward an isolated, abandoned location where other people were potentially waiting for her.

And the scariest part?

She had been only minutes away from leaving home when her friend intervened.

The Details That Made the Catfish So Convincing

What makes this story particularly unsettling is that OP didn’t simply ignore obvious warning signs.

The scammer appeared to have done their homework.

They used the real man’s identity.

They had enough knowledge about his professional connections to recognize the name of someone OP mentioned.

They created a Tinder profile that appeared verified.

They apparently used information from the man’s public social media to make the story more believable.

And they gave OP a plausible reason for wanting to meet privately.

That is precisely why relying on a single verification badge or a convincing social-media presence can create a false sense of security.

A stranger can potentially copy photographs, names, locations, interests, and other publicly available information.

Even something as seemingly reassuring as recognizing a mutual acquaintance can be manipulated.

Here's how people reacted to the post:

Many commenters immediately credited her friend for being vigilant and contacting the real person before OP arrived.

Middlekid7 − 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 Thank goodness your friend was looking out for you! !! So glad you were safe and you’re okay!

sevenbluedonkeys − Holy crap, that is scary. I’m so glad your friend was able to warn you

FindingE-Username − That is so scary! !! When you say you mentioned your friend and he knew who she was. .. did he actually say any details about her, or...

[Reddit User] − Corn star? Orville Redenbacher has been dead for years!

SuperUltraMegaNice − You can just say porn its not a slur

aChunkyChungus − Corn industry? Why were you on tinder and not FarmersOnly?

Others focused on the fact that OP had initially felt embarrassed about being cautious in online dating situations.

Creative_Article_965 − That’s terrifying! !! So glad you are safe! !!!!! Also pro tip never mention someone’s name first to test for the connection to a mutual acquaintance - they’ll...

migrainedujour − Bloody hell, OP. Thank goodness - and your friend is absolutely MVP in this story! What a friend to have!

omiimonster − 1. GLAD YOURE ALIVE AND OKAY 2.honestly tysm - i matched w so many ppl that insitited meeting up straight away or nudes w/o even a convo.

but i always said no for my safety but felt like a prude. this reminds me that theres a reason to be safe

Baguetele − Boy howdy if you ain't got angels watching over you! 😵‍💫 The only thing better would have been showing up with cops to bust up whatever "party" was...

At least cops could keep an eye on those people, because they absolutely did not stop there. Maybe you weren't the first, either. This sounds too elaborate to be the...

Final Thoughts

OP never found out exactly who created the fake profile or what they intended to do.

The police apparently did not have enough evidence to pursue a larger investigation, particularly because OP never arrived and therefore no additional crime against her occurred.

But that uncertainty may be what makes the story so frightening.

She had been given a location.

She had been given a convincing identity.

She believed she had verified the person through social media.

And she was already preparing to drive there.

One phone call from a friend changed everything.

The safest part of the story isn’t that OP trusted her instincts.

It’s that someone else cared enough to double-check them.

Sometimes the difference between an ordinary dating story and a true “Let’s Not Meet” story is only one message.
