Couple Buys a Camper, Comes Home From Vacation, Then Gets a Visit From Police

Buying something you have saved for over several years should feel exciting, especially when it finally makes travel easier and more comfortable. What most people probably do not expect is for that purchase to attract police attention almost immediately after bringing it home.

One Reddit user shared how they and their partner finally bought a small camper after years of saving. They took it straight on a vacation, enjoyed a week without tents or bad weather worries, and returned home ready to clean it before storing it under their carport. Instead, police officers arrived after someone reported that the couple might be living in the RV on their own property.

The misunderstanding was quickly cleared up, but one question remained. With only a few neighbors nearby and no HOA involved, who was watching closely enough to make the call? Scroll down to see what happened next.

A couple’s new camper draws an unexpected police visit after someone reports them for living in it

'Reported to the police for buying a camper'

After a few years of saving, we managed to get the funds together to finally look at getting a camper.

We went to one of the RV Trader locations and found the perfect camper for us.

A little 13' job that has a nice bed for the two of us as well as some bunks so we can take grandchildren with us every now and again.

We took some vacation time and went to the RV place, paid for it, hooked it up and headed to the campground for a lovely week enjoying it.

No more arguing with tents, no more worrying about rain seepage, and having AC was heavenly to sleep in.

We left camp this past Saturday and drove home, getting in late.

We figured we'd do the clean out Yesterday and today and put it under the carport that's off the driveway.

It has canvas sides so that ought to keep most of the weather off of it.

Yesterday evening, the police showed up and were concerned that we were living in the camper.

Someone had reported us to the police since it's not legal to use an RV in our yard.

We explained how we got it last week and had just gotten back from our first trip with it.

What people were seeing, was the two of us cleaning it out and getting it ready to put away until the next time we want to use it.

The officers accepted the explanation, congratulated us on our new toy and went on their way.

Now we don't live in an HOA. We did that once and swore never again. We don't even live near one.

There's one a half mile away from us on the right but there's woods between us and them. We have three neighbors.

Two of them are across the road from us and while we don't know each other, we do wave at each other.

The third is to the left and there's an acre of woods between us so we don't see much of each other.

So now I'm wondering who was so pissy about the fact that we bought a camper that they had to call the police on us like we were squatting on...

Update: We've moved the camper to my sister's farm.

She's got an old barn that she's not using and is letting us stash it there where it's out of sight and out of mind while still being out of...

It'll be interesting to see if anyone comments on the fact that it's vanished.

Sometimes what feels like vigilance to one person feels like unnecessary surveillance to another. The couple had spent years saving for a small camper, finally bought one, enjoyed their first trip, and returned home expecting nothing more dramatic than unpacking it.

Instead, police officers appeared because someone nearby had apparently decided that seeing them inside the camper meant they were illegally living in it. What should have been a happy milestone suddenly became something they had to explain.

Their irritation makes sense because nobody seems to have approached them first. A neighbor could have asked about the camper or simply waited long enough to observe what was happening. Instead, an ambiguous situation was interpreted in the most suspicious way and escalated directly to authorities.

Psychology offers an interesting explanation for how that happens. The American Psychological Association defines fundamental attribution error as the tendency to overestimate personal motives or characteristics while underestimating situational explanations for someone’s behavior.

In this case, whoever reported the camper may have seen people repeatedly entering it and constructed a story about illegal occupancy, while overlooking the much simpler explanation: they had just returned from vacation and were cleaning their new purchase.

There is also a broader neighborhood dynamic at play. Psychiatrist Jean Kim has written that mistrust between neighbors can become contagious, particularly when people begin interpreting ordinary behavior through a lens of territoriality or suspicion.

Healthy neighborhoods generally depend on cooperation, casual familiarity, and enough trust to distinguish genuinely concerning activity from harmless differences in how other people use their property.

That perspective also suggests one caution for the camper owners. They understandably feel watched now, but they do not actually know who made the report or what information that person believed they had. Turning the incident into a hunt for the “guilty neighbor” could create a conflict based on another set of assumptions.

Moving the camper to the sister’s barn solves the practical problem, though it is unfortunate that an innocent purchase became inconvenient enough to require relocation. Cameras may provide useful documentation if future disputes arise, but the healthiest goal is probably evidence rather than retaliation.

The strange part of this story is how little actually happened. A couple bought a camper, went camping, came home, and cleaned it. Someone else supplied the drama by filling in the blanks.

Sometimes the best response to neighborhood suspicion is simply making the facts boring enough that there is nothing left to report.

Check out how the community responded:

These Redditors thought the complaint may have come from someone wrongly assuming people were living in the RV

Karlsvognen − With any luck they thought squatters had arrived and tried to put a stop to it quick.

ZombieSquad429 − IMO even if you think people are living in an RV on your neighbors’ property, and your neighbor is clearly home, mind your business.

1. Weird conclusion to jump to when your neighbor gets an RV

2. It’s punching down. You have a whole house and you’re picking on someone living in an RV. (Theoretically here anyway).

A lot of people are just trying to survive these days.

These commenters believed the reporter was simply bothered by someone else enjoying something they didn’t have

JakeOnRoad − Some people really can’t stand seeing others enjoy something they don't have. Glad the cops were reasonable about it

Snoo-74562 − Be careful who you share your joy with not everyone will be happy for you.

Whoever did this simply wants to steal your joy and happiness. Enjoy your camper! I hope you upset whoever reported you immensely with your happiness.

These users noted the complaint might have come from a nosy neighbor or HOA-type busybody rather than someone next door

Apock- − It didn’t have to be a direct neighbor who dropped a dime.

I e read stories about HOA people approaching not members who property is near theirs to try and enforce their rules.

Could have been one of those people who drove by and reported it.

Nunov_DAbov − If she hadn’t thankfully passed away a couple of years ago, I’d think our across the street

(remember the location, it will matter later) neighbor Nosy Rosy was OP’s neighbor now.

My son had a 30+ year old pickup truck in our yard in back of our detached garage on a stone driveway, invisible to the street.

There was a narrow angle that it was at all visible from. He was restoring it, slowly replacing rusted parts as he could get them.

The truck was running, registered and insured.

One day, we get a visit from the local police telling us there was a complaint about an abandoned vehicle on our (2 acre) property.

I pointed out the current plates and inspection sticker and asked if they wanted to come back later when my son could start it up for them and drive it...

They said everything was fine and left.

I visited the town’s zoning office to clarify exactly what restrictions there were on vehicles and found IF an UNREGISTERED vehicle was in FRONT of the house,

it must be on an IMPROVED surface and could only be there for a specified time.

So, back yard, on a stone drive way, and registered were all disqualifying conditions for a complaint.

The police chief walked by as we were discussing this and said “oh, that must have been Nosy Rosy. ”

She also complained to us about wood chips you used to level a depression in your side yard.

She said her house had “caught termites” from the wood chips.

He asked her if she thought they had put in tiny helmets and matched across the road or tunneled under the asphalt to get to

her house and pointed out that the issue was with her house, not anything we had done.

There were several other Nosy Rosy incidents but memories of this one were triggered by OP’s issue. Illegitum Non Carborundum

These Redditors jokingly suggested giving the complainer more harmless reasons to keep calling until authorities get tired of them

IngrownToenailsHurt − Oh, you have a Mrs Kravitz as a neighbor!

After this I'd be giving her plenty of "innocent" suspicions to call the police again just to make her look like a trouble maker

and if she calls enough to get on their nerves they'll tell you who it is or give you hints.

Foofity − I would be going in and out so often and with so many things that make it look like you're living in there. Food, drinks, a pillow, a...

Maybe take a nap. Watch some TV. Read a book.

When they call again, and they will, you're doing the same thing as last time; cleaning it out, restocking,

checking the inside with a microscope for bed bugs, sealing a tiny leak, repainting the bathroom, etc.

Then the onus turns on them to explain exactly why they think you're living there. And then to you to embarrass the living crap out of them.

Keep doing it, they will keep calling until the police are sick of it.

These commenters shared stories about overly intrusive neighbors complaining about perfectly legal things on private property

Harry_Iconic_Jr − that was me - i thought you guys were putting in a meth lab

rayray2249 − We had one when I was a kid and had a neighbor who was annoyed about it.

No one ever lived in it but they left a n__ty note in the mailbox calling it an ugly eye sore. ..my dad put christmas lights on it for the...
