She Thought She Was Doing Her Coworker a Favor, Until a “Short” Babysitting Trial Turned Into Dinner

When someone asks you to watch their child “for a little while,” it is reasonable to assume you know what you are agreeing to.

For this mom, the arrangement seemed simple. Her coworker needed a break, so she offered to watch her seven-year-old daughter for a short trial run. The plan was for the parents to grab some ice cream nearby and return fairly quickly.

Instead, the evening stretched on. The child arrived hungry, her parents went out for dinner rather than dessert, and the babysitter eventually found herself fighting sleep while knowing she had to be up for work at 4:30 the next morning.

She eventually asked them to come back. Now she is wondering whether she was unfair, or whether her coworker simply took advantage of her kindness.

'AITA for telling my co-worker to come pick up her child early?'

So I have a co-worker (CW) who I’m pretty friendly with at work. We always talk about trying to find time to hangout more but it’s hard as I work...

CW asked if I could watch her 7 yr-old every now and then so her and hubby could get a break. Last night was a trial run to see how...

Her daughter is also special needs so she asked me specifically if I could do this and I agreed to the trial.

This trial run was described to me as “we’ll drop her off for a little and we’ll go grab some dessert nearby like ice cream and come back. Not too...

They get to my house around 7 pm we chit chat a little bit about our workday earlier. Then I hear, “are you hungry, sweetie?”

“Oh yes, I am quite hungry.” This is where I start messing up. I didn’t call out. You didn’t feed your child dinner before coming here?? Honestly, I’m tired at...

She was also interested in what my daughter was eating too so I made her some of that, too after her parents left.

Little one was just a joy and she’s so smart. She’s normally homeschooled so she didn’t have a lot of interaction with other kids or people in general so she...

I sent her mom a little fun update and a cute video while we waited for her parents to return. About an hour later I get a message saying “we’re...

Again I didn’t call it out. I just go that sounds yummy! I was trying to justify it thinking that she had a busy work day while mine was more...

We were coming up on 9 pm by the time I was starting to fall asleep. My workdays start at 4:30 and I was wondering when she was coming back....

Another 30 later, they come back and the energy was different. I let her in, I give her a hug hello, asking how was her little date? She gives me...

I felt bad cause little one did not want to leave so I just stood back and let CW do her mama thing til little one was willing to go.

CW said everything was fine after I asked if she was alright but I’m having mixed emotions on it all.

I started feeling like an a__hole for cutting their date short even though it was meant to be short. They really seemed like they needed the break.

My husband said I shouldn’t feel like an a__hole cause I already went above and beyond accepting to do this for nothing in return and feeding their child. What do...

It Was Supposed to Be a Quick Favor

The two women were friendly coworkers who had often talked about finding time to hang out outside work. But OP already had a packed schedule. She worked two jobs and had two young children of her own with autism.

Even so, when her coworker asked whether she could occasionally watch her seven-year-old daughter so she and her husband could get a break, OP agreed to try it.

The important part was how the evening was presented.

Her coworker said they would drop their daughter off, go get some dessert nearby, and come back shortly afterward. OP figured that sounded manageable.

They arrived around 7 p.m.

Everything seemed fine at first. Then OP heard the little girl say she was hungry.

That immediately raised a question. Had her parents actually fed her before dropping her off?

OP did not want to create an awkward confrontation, so she simply made the child some chicken nuggets and some of the food her own daughter was eating.

The little girl turned out to be wonderful company. Because she was homeschooled and did not get much interaction with other children, she had plenty to talk about. OP even sent her coworker a cute update and video.

Then came the first sign that the evening was not going according to plan.

Dessert Somehow Became Dinner

About an hour after dropping their daughter off, the coworker sent OP a message saying they were going to have dinner and included an address.

OP immediately remembered the earlier conversation.

This was no longer a quick dessert trip.

Still, she tried to be understanding. Maybe her coworker had simply had a difficult day. Maybe the couple really needed the break.

But by around 9 p.m., OP was exhausted.

Her workday started at 4:30 in the morning, and she was already struggling to stay awake. She finally messaged her coworker and explained that she needed to get to bed soon.

She received a quick response saying they were on their way.

Thirty minutes later, they finally arrived.

The mood felt different.

The coworker came inside, gave a flat response when OP asked how their date went, and immediately went to get her daughter ready to leave.

OP felt guilty because the little girl clearly did not want to go. She had enjoyed the evening and seemed comfortable in the house.

But OP had reached her limit.

She had agreed to a short trial run, not an evening-long babysitting session while the parents went out to dinner.

Her husband later told her she had nothing to feel guilty about. In his view, she had already gone above and beyond by agreeing to babysit for free, feeding the child, entertaining her, and keeping her safe for much longer than originally discussed.

And Reddit largely agreed.

The Real Problem Wasn’t the Child

Psychologist and author Nedra Glover Tawwab has written extensively about boundaries and people-pleasing, emphasizing that healthy boundaries involve clearly communicating what you can and cannot reasonably give to other people. She also notes that discomfort after setting a boundary does not automatically mean the boundary was wrong. Nedra Glover Tawwab on boundaries

That distinction fits OP’s situation well.

She was not upset because the child needed food or attention. In fact, she seemed genuinely fond of the little girl.

What bothered her was that the agreement quietly changed without her consent.

She agreed to a short evening while the parents got dessert. Instead, the parents extended their outing into dinner without checking whether OP was comfortable with the change.

That can be especially difficult for someone who is already inclined to say yes. OP later admitted that people-pleasing was one of her biggest weaknesses. She was used to simply saying, “Okay, I can do it,” even when she was tired or overwhelmed.

The lesson here is not that helping people is a mistake. It is that generosity works best when expectations are clear.

If OP had been asked, “Can you babysit until 9:30 while we have dinner?” she could have said yes or no.

Instead, she was given one arrangement and ended up with another.

And asking the parents to come home was not abandoning their child. It was communicating that the agreed-upon favor had reached its limit.

Let's dive into the reactions from Reddit:

guys_pm_urprettyface − NTA. CW used you. She lied.

ArrivalFantastic4324 − “we’ll drop her off for a little and we’ll go grab some dessert nearby like ice cream and come back. Not too long! ” You have nothing to...

thechaoticstorm − Changing to NTA - they tried to pull a fast one. INFO What time were they initially supposed to pick her up? If you were getting up that...

Awkward_Profile_7410 − NTA she is not a friend. She used you for babysitting. She did not feed her child before she dropped her off and did not tell you. She...

k23_k23 − "CW asked if I could watch her 7 yr-old every now and then so her and hubby could get a break. " . . **sounds pretty onesided. **...

sbh56 − Wait. You have two toddlers with autism, and they have a 7-year-old? And THEY need a break? Why did you even agree to this? You're being TA to...

LdiJ46 − I think that your friends were total assholes. First, they didn't feed their child. Second, this was supposed to be a short trial run. They were supposed to...

They knew what time you had to be at work in the morning. I would never babysit for them again. I would consider the trial run to be a failure....

Kooky-Pressure5792 − NTA but you need to grow a backbone. When she asks about watching her daughter again say: I won’t be watching your child again. You told me it...

And after hours gone, you were cold & didn’t even thank me for watching her & feeding her dinner much longer than we agreed.

Angel89411 − NTA. She took advantage of you 100%. You shouldn't feel bad at all.

momosmall − I appreciate ya’ll… I know… I have no backbone! I’m used to just saying okay I can do it. I spoke with a different co-worker just now but...

My one big fatal flaw is being a people pleaser and I do struggle to shake that habit. I’m just not gonna be babysitting again in general. 😂

Final Thoughts

OP did not ruin someone’s date. She simply reminded two adults that their childcare arrangement had limits.

The little girl seemed happy, safe, and well cared for. OP fed her, spent time with her, and even tried to make the evening enjoyable.

But kindness does not mean being available indefinitely.

If the coworker wants another babysitting arrangement, the expectations need to be discussed clearly beforehand, including the exact pickup time and what happens if plans change.

For someone who admits she struggles with people-pleasing, this may have been an uncomfortable lesson. But sometimes saying, “I’m tired, and I need you to come home now,” is not selfish.

It is simply a boundary.

Was OP right to end the babysitting trial when the parents changed their plans, or should she have given them more flexibility?
