Sister Refuses To Respect Boundaries And Keeps Taking The Dog, Owner Finally Loses His Patience

in Social Issues

Anyone who owns a unique or adorable pet knows the attention they can attract. Strangers want photos, neighbors want to pet them, and sometimes friends or relatives get a little too excited about showing them off. But there is a big difference between admiring someone’s pet and taking it without asking.

One Reddit user shared a story about their sister repeatedly taking their dog out of the apartment to introduce him to random people in town. At first it seemed strange but manageable. The second time it happened, however, things took a much more stressful turn.

The incident led to a heated confrontation and plenty of opinions from family members who thought the reaction was too extreme. Keep reading to find out what happened next.

A woman recovering from a painful injury was stunned to learn her sister had taken her dog without permission

'AITA for telling my sister she can't barge into my apartment and dog-nap my dog to meet random strangers?'

So this has happened twice. My sister has unlocked the door to my apartment and taken my dog

to show him off to strangers (he's a Corgi, and he's the only Corgi in our town, so people get weird about it).

The first time, I was so shocked that I just watched her take my dog away (he came back 20 min later but still).

The second time, I was in the shower and didn't hear her come in, so obviously,

when I came out of the shower and my dog was nowhere to be found, I freaked out.

My sister left the door wide open, and I thought he had gotten outside or someone had broken in and taken him.

I called my mom, who then told me that my sister was at her place with her friend and my dog.

I call my sister screaming through the phone to bring him back ASAP.

I am recovering from a painful back injury, and I have to limit my movements to a minimum.

I am also in a lot of pain from walking in general, and even standing for a 20 min shower

(I had a chair, but it broke, and I'm waiting for the replacement) is difficult, so I couldn't just go and get him myself.

Six hours and many irate calls later, she comes back with him. I go off on her, telling her that she can't just take my dog to meet

strangers (my dog is friendly, but still) and that she can't just barge into my apartment without knocking

or letting me know ahead of time. She argues that because of my injury, it would be good for him to get outside

and do something else. She completely ignored the fact that I have friends who help me walk him

and that he does spend three out of seven days a week at my mother's to give him some space while I recover,

but he's fine and at his happiest when he's with me, and that my injury does not excuse her from taking him from me

without my knowledge and/or my permission. I then tell her to hand over the keys, get the hell out, and leave me alone.

She leaves, and I get texts from her, her friends, and my parents saying that I was overreacting.

I know my sister wouldn't do anything to hurt my dog, but she oversteps my boundaries,

something she and my brother do all the time, but that's another story. Was I the a__hole here?.

UPDATE: I was not expecting so many answers and advice and responses to this post!

My building manager has agreed to change it this morning, and now, only I have the keys.

I want to explain further a few things I've noticed I might not have explained properly.

1: My accident was truly a freak accident.

It had rained the previous night, and it was at the same time a cold night, so it made a thin layer of ice on the path

I was walking with my dog, and I didn't realize it was slippery before it was too late. I landed awkwardly and hit the ground hard.

I wasn't able to get back up (I couldn't move from the pain), and I was stuck until someone else came by, about 20 minutes later.

I was taken to a hospital, but doctors didn't find anything wrong, other than some bruising.

They don't know why I have issues walking, but I am improving day by day. I also forgot to mention that I live in Norway.

2: I have friends who help me take him for walks. Feeding him is difficult, but my friend helps me prepare feed

so I can just pour it into the bowl without having to bend over.

However, she cannot look after him outside of that (she has a job; I do too, but I work from home atm).

This is why he's at my mom's place sometimes. He's only a year old and still very much a puppy at heart,

which, in my condition, can get frustrating. My mother has a large yard and two dogs of her own,

so letting him stay with her, he gets an outlet, he gets to play with other dogs, and I get a break to take it easy.

Also, my mother is on probation, so she can't go outside at certain times of the day, so she can't help me much.

3: As for the six hours that passed until I got him back, I wasn't worried about him being with my sister.

She'd never hurt him, but it was the way that she took him that shook me to my core.

4: The lack of awareness of personal boundaries is something my sister and brother (that's another story) have struggled

with for a long time, but talking to them about it has ended up in many fights, and I'm too tired to get into it with them anymore.

5: Idk how to share a photo of my dog with you so I uploaded it to my profile

if you're interested in seeing him (his name is Ludviken), Thank you again for the rewards.

I truly don't deserve them, but I hope this clears some things up, as I can't possibly answer the 600+ comments even if I tried.

Healthy relationships often depend on something people don’t always talk about openly: personal boundaries. These invisible limits help individuals define what behavior feels respectful, safe, and acceptable in their lives. When those boundaries are ignored, especially by family members, it can quickly create tension, confusion, and emotional stress.

According to Psych Central, personal boundaries are the limits people establish to protect their time, emotional health, physical space, and belongings. They function as guidelines that communicate how others should treat us and help maintain a sense of independence within relationships.

Without clear boundaries, individuals may begin to feel overwhelmed or taken advantage of, particularly when others assume they have unlimited access to their personal life.

Boundaries exist in several forms, and many people don’t realize how easily they can be crossed. One common example is physical boundaries, which relate to privacy and personal space, such as someone’s home.

Entering another person’s living space without permission can feel deeply intrusive because the home is usually considered a place of safety and control. There are also material boundaries, which involve personal possessions. These can include everyday items like phones, cars, or even pets.

When someone takes or uses these belongings without asking first, it can lead to frustration or resentment because the owner’s autonomy has been ignored. Even if the person believes they are helping, the absence of consent can still cause conflict.

Another type is emotional boundaries, which protect a person’s mental well-being. These limits allow individuals to decide how much emotional energy they want to give to others and prevent feelings of pressure or manipulation. When emotional boundaries are repeatedly crossed, people may begin to feel drained or resentful, even toward those they care about.

Research discussed by Psych Central highlights that maintaining healthy boundaries is closely connected to overall mental well-being. When people fail to establish or enforce these limits, they may experience higher levels of stress, frustration, and emotional exhaustion.

Boundaries help create balance by allowing individuals to support others while still protecting their own comfort and safety. Family relationships can make boundaries more complicated.

Because relatives often grow up sharing space, belongings, and responsibilities, some people continue behaving as if those same rules apply in adulthood. One person might see their actions as casual or helpful, while the other experiences them as an invasion of privacy.

Situations like these show why clear communication is essential. When people explain what behavior is acceptable and what makes them uncomfortable, it becomes easier to avoid misunderstandings.

In many cases, conflicts are not caused by bad intentions but by different expectations about personal space and respect.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors urged OP to change locks and never give the sister keys again

larochelleville − NTA. If your sister cannot respect your boundaries, change your locks.

Avebury1 − NTA. Tell your sister that if she ever tries it again, your first phone call will be to 911.

Send her a text to document that she has already entered your home twice without permission

and that any further incidents will result in a phone call to the police.

IntrovertedRamen10 − NTA - I highly suggest never letting your sister have the key again,

or she will dog-nap your dog a third time. She can’t just barge in and walk out with YOUR DOG.

Not to mention she left your front door wide open. What if some creep or even a burglar walked in?

Poison-walker3 − Nta. Next time this happens, press charges and get the pup chipped.

Who knows what your sis will do in retaliation.

These commenters stressed the danger of leaving the door open while OP was vulnerable

SandrineSmiles − NTA Leaving a door open like she did could also put you in grave danger. Also, who does that, seriously?

My dog is cute, but I can't imagine any of my sisters disappearing like that with her without telling me.

RegularStatus5 − NTA. What the actual f*** is wrong with your sister?

She went uninvited into your house, stole your dog, and left your door wide open while you were in the shower!

Anyone could have come in and stolen something or done something to you! Didn't she think of your safety at all?

Also, if somebody had come into my house while I was showering, taken my dog without permission,

and wouldn't bring him back after the FIRST phone call, I would have called the police to report that X person stole my pet.

Go nuclear OP. Tell Sister and Mother that if she ever takes your dog without permission again, you will press charges.

morningmint − NTA Is anything else getting worked up about the fact that OP's sister left their front door open

while they were in the shower and are also injured? OP, you have much bigger problems here with your sister.

And the fact that she ran to your extended family and friends to get them involved in your fight? Ugh!

chlocatt − Umm excuse me, but you were in the shower for 20 mins while your sister left your door wide open. NTA.

I get that this is a dog issue you posted about, but honestly, what the f__k was your sister thinking?

Yeah, okay, she didn’t tell you she came into your home to take your dog, but more importantly,

she ended up leaving the front door to your apartment open while you were unaware and vulnerable in the shower

as a woman with limited physical mobility. On top of that, you’re the only one in your town with

an easily identifiable dog that your sister is taking around showing off to strangers for attention.

Let her act like a little brat all she wants to try and justify her “just taking your dog out”

because you can just hit her back with how she jeopardized your safety in a massive way.

This would fill me with rage because just imagine what the worst-case scenario

would have been for you and let that sink in. Don’t EVER give her your key again.

These Reddit users criticized the sister for barging in and ignoring boundaries

ChewMyFudge − NTA. She probably told family and friends b__lshit story about

how she tried to 'help,' but you went off on her or something.

Never give her your keys, and if family and friends keep pestering you, tell them the truth.

She barges in, doesn't communicate about ANYTHING, and leaves the door wide open for anyone to just come in

and take your stuff while you're literally in the shower. That's not normal.

Raponchigo − NTA. She just can't walk in at any time she wants just

because you are family AND take your dog without letting you know.

It's mental. She wants to take advantage of your dog and tries to play the victim.

This Redditor sarcastically suggested doing the same to teach the sister a lesson

nekochiri − Pop in to her apartment, take something she values, leave her door open, and see how she reacts.

These commenters backed OP, saying it’s their home and dog; no explanation needed

LockeLamorra86 − NTA it is your home and your dog. Actually, there is there is nothing more to say to this.

umamifiend − NTA Some people like the option of dog-napping for social network purposes.

You do not need to participate in that with your animal if you do not want to. Your doggo is yours. Fuck them!

This commenter said if the sister wants a dog, she should get her own

[Reddit User] − NTA, if your friends and parents want your sister to have a dog, they should get her a dog.

Your dog already has a loving and caring owner in you.

This Redditor called the sister’s behavior extreme boundary stomping and unsafe

KaliTheBlaze − NTA. That was some serious Godzilla-style boundary stomping.

Demanding your key back was pretty much the only reasonable response.

You were in an extremely vulnerable position because of her.

Your missing dog may have been what upset you the most (very understandably), but emphasizing

how unsafe she made you might be easier for other people to understand.

What if you’d walked out of the bathroom n__ed, with your door open to the world?

What if someone had seen the open door and decided to help themselves to your belongings or worse?

Good gods, what she did was so invasive and disrespectful and put you at such risk!

If she wants to borrow the dog, just like borrowing anything else, she needs your consent.

We have a term for taking things without asking: theft!

(And yes, legally dogs get treated as things; the law isn’t terribly enlightened about pets and the fact that they’re really f__ry family.)

Family disagreements can get messy, but this situation struck a nerve for many readers because it blended two sensitive issues: personal boundaries and beloved pets.

Most people agreed the dog owner’s reaction came from a place of fear and frustration rather than anger alone. After all, discovering your dog missing and your front door wide open while you’re injured would rattle just about anyone.

Still, the bigger question remains: was demanding the keys back a reasonable boundary or an overreaction fueled by panic? What would you do if a family member kept “borrowing” your pet without permission? Would you shut the door completely… or try to smooth things over? Share your thoughts below.
