Man Plans A Romantic Trip To Win Her Over, But She Sees A Completely Different Story

One romantic weekend produced two stories from entirely different genres. After four weeks and roughly eight dates, a man decided he had found someone special. He arranged an overnight trip to New York City, booked accommodation, selected an expensive restaurant, bought flowers, and prepared to ask the woman to become his girlfriend.

In his version, he delivered the commitment she had always wanted, only for her to feel sick, leave dinner, abandon her suitcase, and travel home alone. Her account sounded far less like a romantic comedy.

She described an undisclosed destination, unfamiliar accommodation with one bed, no independent transportation, and mounting pressure inside a city where she knew nobody.

One person saw flowers and certainty; the other saw lost control and an increasingly difficult exit. Ready to compare both versions? Read the original story below!

A surprise New York getaway became romantic to one date and frightening to the other

'Guy and girl mutual friends told me their very different takes on their breakup with each other'

I have mutual friends who are dating. I guess were, now. They broke up over this weekend. Both called to tell me about the breakup.

I’m going to share both their versions of what happened to show the power of perspective.

And really because… I’m not a gossip, so I have no one in my real life to tell.

Context, they met four weeks ago, they’ve been on about eight dates.

This is my best paraphrase of how they recounted their stories to me, abridged for clarity’s sake.

HIS VERSION OF EVENTS: I knew right away I’d found something special with this girl and I had to lock her down.

She talked about how her issue in past relationships was the guys not wanting commitment and being squirrelly about putting labels on things. So I planned a whole nice romantic...

She’d never been and she said she’d always wanted to go. I got us a nice Air BnB. I got us a fancy restaurant. Flowers. The whole thing was perfect.

We’re outside the restaurant and I asked her, “Will you be my girlfriend?” She says yes. It’s all good. We go in and sit down to eat.

Having a great conversation. Chilling and it’s all good. Midway through dinner she goes to the bathroom.

Comes back and says she’s not feeling well. I ask if she wants to go back to the Air BnB. She says no, she just needs some air.

She gets up and full on leaves. Leaves the whole city. Leaves her suitcase of clothes. Just leaves.

She sends me a text and says she wasn’t feeling well so she went back home.

Calls the next day and said she feels like things were moving too fast so she’d have to not see me anymore.

I don’t know what happened. She won’t meet up with me to talk about it. I don’t know if she’s insane or I am.

You just can’t win with women. I did literally exactly what she wanted.

HER VERSION OF EVENTS

It’s too bad it didn’t work out because I actually really liked him.

We had seen each other for a few weeks and were just at the stage where we were talking about what we wanted.

I told him things didn’t work out with [my ex boyfriend] because after two years together he refused to be clear

whether or not our relationship was leading to marriage or we were ultimately just “dating”

and that at my age I’m not someone who’s comfortable dating just to socialize.

I don’t know if that’s what started this whole mess, but I thought I had been pretty straightforward.

So he tells me he’s planned a trip. He doesn’t ask me if I want to go on a trip, he tells me that he has booked and paid for...

It seemed like he was trying to do something nice and I wanted to see where things could go between us so I said f__k it, let’s take the trip.

I was pressing him for details as to where we were going, where we were staying, how we were getting there,

and he wouldn’t tell me any of that which made me uncomfortable.

I know he’s been a friend of yours a long time but that only means so much to me, I’ve only ever met him a handful of times.

So I find out he’s driving us in his personal car to New York City where I’ve never been and do not know anybody, do not know the agenda or...

But I agreed to go, I feel like I’m being over-anxious. We go to this shady and unhygienic Air BnB and it is a studio apartment with one bed.

There’s a couch so I’m rationalizing “I guess one of us is going to sleep on the couch?”

I set my stuff down and I’m freaking out internally because I’ve never slept with this man and I had no intention to do so that weekend. I felt played.

I felt like he’d taken advantage of me. Nothing leading up to that weekend physically between us should have led him to believe

we were in a place in the relationship where we were about to have s__.

He knows I’m just coming off this awful breakup and wanting to take things slow, I was careful to be sure he knew that.

So we drive to this expensive restaurant in his personal car. He makes a point to say he’s going to pay for everything.

And my stuff is at some Air BnB I can’t even remember the address to. At this point I’m starting to get legitimately terrified.

Then as we’re walking in he asks me “Will you be my girlfriend?”

After not even a month of seeing each other, after getting me in a strange city with my stuff somewhere inaccessible,

and my only mode of transportation his personal car. And one bed to share that coming night.

I called my dad to get me a ticket home and I called an uber and I pretended to be sick so as not to offend him.

He seemed like a nice guy with genuine intentions but you don’t know how a guy is going to take r__ection at that level even if it’s an honest misunderstanding.

I felt really upset. If he knew what he was doing he’s disgusting and if he didn’t know, he hasn’t been listening to me at all.

So the next day I called and told him it was over. I can’t imagine what he was thinking.

Sometimes the most painful misunderstandings happen when two people believe they are showing love, but they are actually responding to completely different emotional needs.

One person may see a grand gesture as proof of care and commitment, while the other may experience that same gesture as pressure, uncertainty, or a loss of control. The breakup in this story was not simply caused by a trip or a question about becoming official. It came from two people interpreting the same events through completely different emotional lenses.

The OP’s story highlights how perspective shapes reality in relationships. From his point of view, he was listening to what she wanted: she wanted someone serious, someone who was not afraid of commitment. He believed planning a romantic weekend would show intention and make her feel valued.

From her perspective, however, commitment was not just about moving quickly. She wanted emotional security, trust, and the ability to participate in decisions that affected her. The surprise trip, hidden details, unfamiliar location, and shared accommodation created a situation where she felt trapped rather than cherished.

A different perspective is that both people may have been acting from their own fears. He appeared afraid of losing someone he saw as special, so he tried to accelerate the relationship and create a defining moment.

She appeared afraid of repeating past experiences where her needs were ignored, so she became highly sensitive to signs that she was losing control. Neither person necessarily entered the situation intending harm, but their emotional histories shaped how they reacted.

Relationship experts often explain that healthy intimacy requires a balance between closeness and autonomy.

Psychologist and relationship researcher Dr. Sue Johnson, founder of Emotionally Focused Therapy, explains that couples often struggle when their actions are driven by unmet emotional needs rather than genuine understanding of their partner’s experience. She emphasizes that emotional safety comes from feeling heard, respected, and secure within the relationship.

This explains why the romantic gesture failed despite good intentions. The OP’s friend focused on the message he wanted to send: “I am serious about you.”

However, he may not have considered the message she actually received: “A major decision about our relationship has already been planned without me.” The difference between intention and impact is where many relationship conflicts begin.

The situation also shows why communication before major gestures matters. Romantic surprises can be meaningful, but they work best when they still leave room for the other person’s comfort and choice. A surprise dinner or thoughtful gift allows flexibility. A surprise overnight trip with unknown details involves a much higher level of trust.

Ultimately, this story is a reminder that love is not only about doing something big for someone. It is about understanding what makes that person feel safe, respected, and valued.

Two people can have sincere feelings for each other and still discover that their expectations for a relationship are moving at completely different speeds. Sometimes the hardest realization is that good intentions are not always enough without emotional awareness.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters believed the man moved too quickly and showed poor relationship judgment

return_the_urn − This dude isn’t very experienced with relationships

CindySvensson − What loon gives a surprise trip to someone you've been dating for a month? How could he not see his own red flags?

Zzen220 − The dude watches too many movies. How would he have reacted to getting dragged to another city with no notice and no explanation?

These users viewed the gesture as love bombing or an attempt to rush commitment

AdComprehensive8045 − The guy was love bombing hard.

Masih-Development − I think the dude idealized her and led with money to lock her down. He also misinterpreted what she meant by commitment.

She meant by it that the guy wants to marry her when they have ALREADY been in relationship for a while.

He apparently thought she meant that new potential mates need to show they are all-in from the beginning.

He also didn't consider how vulnerable she would likely feel with everything he planned.

Then also asking her to be your girlfriend there is unwise since the woman is afraid to give an authentic answer

because she knows she still has to sleep in the same room as this guy. She might think that if she says "no" that he can easily k__l her.

All in all he should have been less assumptuous about what she means by commitment and maybe asked her to clarify further.

He should have also be more considerate to her potential felt sense of unsafety.

She shouldn't have gone on the trip until she got to know him better.

This post provides great value in how misunderstandings happen between men and women in dating.

These commenters supported the woman’s discomfort and understood why she felt uneasy

Stonedagemj − I totally understand her side. A month is not long enough to go on a surprise trip together.

FairtexBlues − He came on WAY too hard and tried the “be ready at 8pm with the red dress” trick with full on trip to NYC?

Tell your buddy they are NOT a bad guy, they just went too HAM, too early, AND tried to take too much control.

This does seem to be a genuine romantic gesture but the lack of sharing knowledge and getting buy in caused it go south hard.

There’s a line between cute get away and “where the eff is this dude taking me? ”.

SmellyLeopard − As a man I'm 100% on her side. It sounds like he's a bit of a Nice Guy.

Perhaps he's just clueless about how women are often treated and how that shapes how they have to navigate this world sometimes.

CherrieChocolatePie − People that just started dating and haven't slept together really should not travel together.

And if they do, they need separate rooms.

This guy us absolutely clueless. The girl wants commitment but not this soon and at this level. He is showing that he has no idea about relationships at all.

Was he merely inexperienced, or were the secrecy and one-bed booking too concerning to overlook? Could honest planning have saved the relationship, or was leaving the wisest response? Share the verdict below.
