eBay Scammer Thinks He Won A Free MacBook, But The Seller Has Other Plans

Scammers often rely on people panicking or making quick decisions, but sometimes the tables turn when someone recognizes the trick and decides not to play along. While most scams end with someone losing something valuable, the most satisfying stories are the ones where the scammer realizes they were the one being fooled.

The original poster (OP) shared how they turned an attempted eBay scam into a long game of their own. After selling an old MacBook, OP received a suspicious message from someone pretending to be the buyer and asking for the item to be shipped elsewhere.

Instead of simply blocking the scammer, OP came up with a plan to let the scammer believe they had successfully tricked someone. Now, the scammer is waiting excitedly for a package that was never coming to them. Scroll down to see how this reverse scam played out.

A seller tricks an eBay scammer into thinking he won a free MacBook, only to reveal the scammer wasted his own time

'Some i__ot scammer on ebay thinks they got me and I can't be more excited'

A week ago, I listed my old macbook on ebay. After a few days, somebody won the auction and paid immediately.

A few minutes later , somebody messages me saying that they want to ship the item to their friend's address.

At first I thought this was the guy who won the auction, but turns out that was a completely different person.

I was just gonna curse them out and block him, but then I had an idea.

Why don't I ship the MacBook to the right person and also send the tracking number to the scammer. so he thinks it's coming to him.

Well, that's exactly what I did, and it's going to be delivered today.

So now this guy's been texting me all week giddy because he thinks he's gonna get a free macbook.

But in about five hours , he's gonna realize I wasted an entire week of his life.

He thought he just came up on a MacBook for free. But the only thing I did was waste this time.

Most people know the frustration of dealing with dishonest people, especially when someone tries to take advantage of their trust. There is something satisfying about seeing a person who planned to exploit someone else suddenly lose control of the situation.

In this story, the OP was faced with a common online scam attempt. A stranger tried to redirect an eBay purchase by pretending to be the legitimate buyer and requesting that the item be sent somewhere else. Instead of immediately reacting with anger, OP recognized the manipulation and decided to turn the situation around.

The emotional appeal of the story comes from the reversal: the scammer spent days believing he had successfully fooled someone, while OP quietly followed the correct transaction process and allowed the scammer’s own confidence to become the source of his disappointment.

A different perspective is that this kind of response feels satisfying because scams often rely on making victims feel powerless. When someone attempts fraud, they usually expect fear, confusion, or desperation from the other person. OP’s decision removed that advantage. However, situations like this also highlight why caution matters.

Playing with scammers can create risks if personal information, shipping details, or another buyer’s privacy becomes involved. The safest victory is always protecting yourself first.

Cybersecurity experts often explain that scammers rely heavily on psychological manipulation rather than just technical tricks. According to the Federal Trade Commission, scammers frequently use urgency, trust-building, and misleading requests to convince people to ignore normal safety procedures.

The FTC advises consumers to be cautious when someone asks for unusual payment, shipping, or account changes outside standard platforms.

This explains why the OP’s instinct to slow down and verify the situation was the most important part of the story. The scammer’s plan depended on the seller believing the message came from the real buyer.

Once OP noticed that the accounts were different, the scam lost its power. The humorous twist was simply that the scammer did not realize the opportunity had disappeared.

There is also an interesting psychological element behind why people enjoy stories like this. Scammers often create an unfair situation where one person tries to gain something without earning it. Seeing that person experience frustration can feel like a small form of justice because the usual power imbalance is reversed.

The bigger lesson is that online transactions reward patience. A person does not need to outsmart every scammer with a clever trick. Sometimes the strongest response is simply refusing to follow their script, verifying details, and letting the scam attempt fail on its own.

The scammer wanted a free MacBook. Instead, he received a free lesson in not celebrating too early.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors enjoyed the prank and supported the clever reverse scam idea

Ok-Palpitation2401 − That's wonderful. I'd actually send an actual package to him with a photo of my middle finger, but it's just me being petty like that

ysfex3 − A tasty reverse scam. Make sure to string them along afterwards by providing pictures of the delivery XD

These commenters warned that tracking details could expose the buyer’s private address

frightenedscared − Maybe don’t send the scammer the tracking number because won’t that mean they can see where it’s going?

Like doxxing the real person’s address? (Not sure what country you’re in) Also this would work in r/pettyrevenge

Rusalka-rusalka − Does the tracking give the address of where to expect it?

The scammer may not have known where it was going, and might try to steal it after delivery. Not a good idea imo.

BroJackson_ − The tracking numbers shows the final destination. This prank will last about two seconds.

travster23 − Doesn’t tracking have the actual address on it? So would you be sending the scammer the address of the actual purchaser? That doesn’t sound good.

This user joked about continuing the scammer’s frustration with a fake shipping problem

SecretRecipe − Wait, It didn't arrive? OMG I'm so sorry, FedEx got the address wrong.

FedEx is charging me $50 to re-ship the item, can you please send me $50 so I can process the shipment?

This commenter pointed out that the scammer should have noticed the package issue quickly

firedonmydayoff − Unless this guy lives in the same area as the real buyer, he should have known after the first day or two.

This Redditor shared a similar legendary scam reversal story involving an eBay scammer

Vuelhering − There was a very, very funny posting about an ebay scammer on Something Awful way back in 2004.

Basically, someone was selling a powerbook, and a scammer in London tried to scam him with a fake escrow service.

This seller basically sent him a brick in a binder marked "P-p-p-powerbook" and gave an accurately high value so he had to pay customs charges along with shipping.

There were SA forum members waiting at the address to capture the reaction.

You gotta see the pics: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/events/p-p-p-powerbook

Do you think the seller’s approach was a clever way to teach a scammer a lesson, or did it create unnecessary risks? Have you ever encountered a suspicious online buyer? Share your experiences below!
