He Thought He Was Making New Friends, Then Woke Up to a Message Saying He Made Them Uncomfortable

He thought he had finally done something good for his social life. With his usual group of friends already gone for the day, a college student decided to take a chance and approach a group of female classmates sitting together on campus.

His intentions were simple. He wanted to socialize, meet people outside his usual circle, and maybe make a few new friends. From his perspective, the conversation seemed completely normal. He asked casual questions, including how everyone had done on their recent exams, and believed the group was having a friendly conversation.

Then, at 5:48 the next morning, his phone lit up with a message that completely changed how he remembered the previous afternoon.

One of the women told him that his attempt to join the group had made her and her friends uncomfortable. She felt his decision to sit with them was intrusive and specifically mentioned his questions about their grades. She also made it clear that she had no interest in becoming closer and wanted their future interactions to remain strictly academic.

He Thought He Was Making New Friends, Then Woke Up to a Message Saying He Made Them Uncomfortable

'TIFU by misreading the room with a group of classmates and getting a severe reality check at 5:48 AM?'

This actually happened yesterday afternoon, but I’m dealing with the fallout today.

My main group of friends had already left for the day, and I still had some time to k__l on campus. I saw a group of female classmates sitting together,...

I thought everything was going totally fine. We were chatting, I asked them a few casual questions (including how they did on our recent school grades/exams to keep the conversation...

I left feeling like I’d made a good effort to connect with people outside my usual crowd.

Fast forward to 5:48 AM this morning. My alarm hasn't even gone off yet, and I wake up to a direct message from one of the girls in that group.

She essentially dropped a wall of text letting me know that my attempt to join them actually made her and her friends super uncomfortable.

She specifically mentioned that asking about their grades was awkward, that me sitting near them felt intrusive, and that if I had any intentions of getting close to her or...

I was hit with total emotional bomb (and that's being generous). I was acting in 100% good faith with zero weird or predatory intentions, so finding out that my presence...

If I had caught even a single hint of discomfort yesterday, I would have apologized and walked away right then and there

I didn't argue. I replied owning up to it, told her I had no bad intent, apologized for making her feel uncomfortable, and agreed to keep things strictly academic.

Right after that, I archived our chat, noticed she unfollowed me on social media, unfollowed her back to match her energy, and now I'm just sitting here at 6 AM...

TL;DR: Tried to be friendly and join a group of female classmates when my main friends left campus, thought we had a fun time, woke up at 5:48 AM to...

He Thought Everything Had Gone Fine

The student had approached the group after his own friends had already left campus. He wasn’t trying to flirt or make anyone uncomfortable. He genuinely wanted to expand his social circle.

He sat down with the group and joined their conversation. He asked questions and tried to keep things moving naturally. Nothing about the interaction seemed alarming to him.

In fact, he left feeling pretty good about it.

He thought he had taken a small but meaningful step toward becoming more social. Instead of staying with the same people all the time, he had made an effort to talk to classmates he didn’t normally spend time with.

That feeling lasted until the next morning.

At 5:48 a.m., before his alarm had even gone off, he received a lengthy direct message from one of the women.

She explained that his behavior had made her and her friends uncomfortable. Sitting down with them had apparently felt intrusive, and his questions about their grades had made things awkward. Most importantly, she didn’t want him trying to become part of their social circle.

He was stunned.

He knew what his intentions had been, and they had been completely harmless. That made the message particularly painful because he suddenly had to reconcile what he thought had happened with how someone else experienced it.

He also couldn’t understand why nobody had said anything at the time.

If he’d noticed that someone was uncomfortable, he said he would have apologized immediately and left.

Instead of Arguing, He Accepted It

Despite feeling embarrassed and hurt, he didn’t fight back.

He apologized, explained that he hadn’t intended to make anyone uncomfortable, and agreed to keep future interactions focused strictly on school.

Then he archived the conversation.

He also noticed that the woman had unfollowed him on social media, so he unfollowed her as well. At that point, he was left sitting awake at around six in the morning, replaying the previous afternoon in his head.

Had he really been that oblivious?

Was asking about someone’s grades actually strange?

Had he crossed a social boundary without realizing it?

Those questions were probably more useful than simply deciding that the woman was wrong.

Reddit, unsurprisingly, was divided.

Some commenters believed the message probably represented only one person’s feelings rather than the entire group’s. Others pointed out that there was an important detail missing: whether he had actually asked permission to join them or simply inserted himself into an established conversation.

That distinction matters. Walking up to classmates and saying something like, “Mind if I join you?” can feel very different from simply sitting down without asking.

At the same time, asking about recent grades is hardly an inherently inappropriate question, especially between classmates.

What Psychology Says About Misreading Social Cues

Psychologist and professor emerita Susan Krauss Whitbourne has written about how people interpret social cues, noting that reading other people’s emotions depends on a combination of verbal and nonverbal information. Importantly, those signals can be ambiguous, and people do not always interpret them correctly.

Psychology Today also notes that people routinely misread others’ emotions because of personal biases and situational factors. Looking at the entire context rather than relying on one isolated cue can improve social understanding.

That seems especially relevant here.

The student wasn’t necessarily wrong for believing the conversation was going well. But he also can’t dismiss the woman’s discomfort simply because he didn’t intend to cause it.

Both things can be true.

He may have had completely innocent intentions while still coming across differently than he expected. And she was entitled to decide that she didn’t want a closer friendship.

The healthiest response was exactly what he ultimately did: listen, apologize, respect the boundary, and move forward instead of trying to convince her that she shouldn’t have felt uncomfortable.

Here's the comments of Reddit users:

QuadDad − This is one person in the group? I doubt the others felt the same. Just be a regular person to the others. . see what happens.

i_poop_chainsaws − No. Her message says more about her than about you. You know your own heart and you did nothing wrong. Don’t let the world bring you down. Maybe...

Keep your chin up, and I hope you continue to live a life where you don’t understand the lives of those who need to put up protective walls.

Perfect_Caregiver_90 − I'm confused. She wants to keep interactions strictly about academics but asking about grades was "intrusive"?

That message gives big "ugh I have a boyfriend" when nobody asked or gave a single f__k energy. I'm a woman and I doubt she is speaking for the group....

They tend to be overzealous and run off anyone who approaches regardless of how the others feel about it. Try not to take this to heart. Keep working on making...

TacoLord696969 − You handled the situation correctly. They seem like assholes so I wouldn’t worry about it.

Artikzzz − Why is asking about grades such a big deal? I personally don't get it

DefendTheStar88x − College seems insane nowadays.

Different_Cry_3141 − Have you spoken to these girls at all before this happened? Did you have any baseline relationships before going talk to them?

Iamapartofthisworld − Sounds like it might be just her - it doesn't sound like you did anything wrong. Keep talking to people.

sherahero − Did you ask if you could join their group or did you literally just interject yourself into their conversation? I think that's very important to her reaction.

Noiding − I'd apologize to one of the others just to gauge if others felt that way and to innocently make sure they know their buddy is talking for them....

Final Thoughts

The biggest lesson here may not be that he was “stupid,” as he called himself. Social situations are messy, and people don’t always experience the same conversation in the same way.

He could have asked before joining the group. They could have communicated their discomfort earlier. Instead, everyone walked away with completely different interpretations of the same interaction.

What matters now is what he does next. He apologized, respected the boundary, and can use the experience to become more aware of social cues without becoming afraid to talk to people.

One awkward conversation shouldn’t convince anyone to stop trying to connect with others.

Was this simply a painful misunderstanding, or did he genuinely cross a social boundary without realizing it?
