Homeowner Finds Contractor Blocking the Driveway, So He Moves the Truck Himself

Finding your own driveway blocked is frustrating enough. Discovering that the driver has disappeared when you have somewhere important to be makes the situation much harder, especially when phone calls and a quick search produce absolutely no solution.

One Redditor encountered exactly that problem while leaving for a doctor’s appointment. A contractor working elsewhere in his townhome community had parked an SUV completely across the driveway, then apparently walked away.

After searching nearby and unsuccessfully calling the leasing office, the OP noticed something unusual: the vehicle was unlocked, its rear hatch was open, and the keys were still sitting in the ignition.

With the clock ticking, he made a decision that solved his immediate problem but crossed a boundary some people might consider significant. Scroll down to see what he did and whether Reddit thought he went too far.

A homeowner moves a contractor’s truck after it blocks her driveway and prevents her from leaving for an appointment

not the actual photo

'AITA for moving a maintenance worker’s truck that was blocking my driveway?'

This morning I had to get to a doctor’s appointment so I opened the garage and backed out to find that

a maintenance worker had completely blocked our driveway with his truck.

We live in a townhome community and this was a contractor who was redoing the siding on one of the units.

I figured he was around because he left the rear hatch of his Cadillac SUV wide open so I searched around the units

near our townhome and couldn’t find anyone. I tried calling the leasing office, but no one answered.

Since the rear hatch was open, I tried the driver side door and it was unlocked which is where I noticed that he left his keys in the ignition.

I didn’t want to be late for my appointment so I got in, turned it on and just drove it forward enough to unblock our driveway.

I didn’t touch anything else in the car or even shut the rear hatch.

I left and my spouse left soon after to bring our child to daycare.

When she got back the worker was now back and replacing some siding, but gave her a really n__ty glare thinking that she moved it.

Which I think was uncalled for especially since he was the one who blocked our driveway on a weekday morning

and then left his vehicle unattended with the keys left in it. Am I the a__hole?

Few things create instant frustration like discovering that another person’s carelessness has taken control of your schedule. The OP had a doctor’s appointment, their spouse needed to handle daycare, and a contractor had completely blocked the household’s driveway before apparently disappearing.

After searching nearby and receiving no answer from the leasing office, the OP faced an irritating choice: miss or delay an appointment because of somebody else’s parking decision, or solve the problem personally. That urgency makes the decision understandable, even if moving a stranger’s vehicle introduces another set of concerns.

Emotionally, this conflict is largely about control and responsibility. The worker temporarily removed the OP’s ability to leave home, apparently without asking permission or remaining immediately available.

Finding the keys then offered an unusually easy solution. From the OP’s perspective, moving the SUV a short distance probably felt less like interfering with someone’s property and more like restoring access to their own.

The worker, however, may have returned to discover that a stranger had entered and driven his vehicle. His irritation can therefore make sense even while his original parking choice was inconsiderate.

That distinction offers a more interesting perspective than simply deciding who behaved worse. People tend to judge their own questionable choices through circumstances while judging someone else’s through the action itself.

The OP thinks, reasonably, “I had an appointment and exhausted the obvious options.” The contractor might think, “Someone entered my truck without permission.” Both descriptions can be true simultaneously.

Social psychologist Saul McLeod explains the fundamental attribution error as our tendency to overemphasize personality when explaining another person’s behavior while underestimating situational pressures.

Someone seeing a badly parked truck might quickly conclude its driver is inconsiderate; someone discovering their vehicle has been moved might similarly conclude the person responsible is disrespectful. In both cases, missing context can intensify the judgment.

Psychologist Guy Winch also explains that anger frequently emerges when people perceive unfairness or believe their goals have been obstructed. The feeling itself can identify a legitimate problem, but acting while angry can produce decisions carrying consequences beyond the original grievance.

That fits this situation well. The OP had every reason to object to having the driveway blocked. Yet entering and operating another person’s vehicle potentially creates avoidable complications involving damage, accusations, insurance, or local law, even when nothing bad actually happens.

A safer response in any repeat situation would be to photograph the obstruction, document attempts to locate the driver, contact property management or the contractor’s company, and use whatever authorized towing or enforcement process applies locally.

The worker created the original problem. The lesson for the OP is simply that fixing someone else’s bad decision should not require taking on unnecessary liability of their own.

See what others had to share with OP:

These users said the driver caused the problem and was lucky OP did not have him towed

fluffy_rainbow_sheep − NTA you made the effort to find him first, and he should've been more considerate and not blocked someone's driveway

singerbeerguy − NTA. Honestly, they are lucky you didn’t have it towed. Blocking a driveway with a parked car is illegal.

GollumTrees − NTA would he have preferred that you called the cops or a tow truck?

These Redditors felt OP was morally justified even if the legal details were less certain

No_Rock9818 − Morally NTA, legally I'm unsure lol. The guy's a thoughtless d__k, his glares aren't worth your concern.

BigDanDeMan − NTA He made the choice to block you in, he had to live with the consequences,

I mean, it's better than having him towed, which you had the right to do.

These commenters joked that leaving the keys made the truck fair game to be moved

ElectricalFocus560 − I’m petty, but I might’ve taken the keys out and hit them under the front seat because he’s lucky no one stole his truck

crazy-beech − NTA, this is weird! Keys in ignition when parked somewhere questionable is the small town equivalent of "move me if I'm in your way. "

I work on a construction site where the parking situation is atrocious (the parking lot is still a giant mud pit at the moment so we can't park there LOL).

We all leave keys in the ignition of our cars so we can move each other's vehicles

because we all end up blocking each other in (not enough room for everyone otherwise).

These commenters stressed that blocking a driveway could create serious problems during an emergency

banana71421 − Nta what if you had an emergency? What if a relative called to say they'd fallen, hurt themselves, couldn't get up?

He's lucky you didnt park it on the moon for him to find.

Swirlyflurry − NTA Honestly some people think that driving a work vehicle means that they can park wherever the hell they want.

They can’t. They need to follow the same rules as the rest of us, and he’s lucky you’re not as petty / have time to burn like I do,

because I have called the cops before because someone blocked our driveway and we couldn’t get out.

HappiLearnerToo − There is an AH in this situation and it is not you. Call the company (both your townhome community and the contractors).

Tell them to be sure this doesn't happen again.
