Pregnant Mom Begs Husband To Let Her Nap, But He Keeps Finding Ways To Wake Her

in Social Issues

Being exhausted is difficult enough, but I think it becomes especially frustrating when the person who should protect your chance to rest keeps interrupting it instead. Pregnancy, childcare, and household responsibilities can make even a short nap feel precious.

One pregnant mom reached that point while caring for a toddler and managing a packed household routine. At 20 weeks, she says her husband repeatedly wakes her whenever she falls asleep, whether he wants her to move to another room, prepare his lunch, or simply because he prefers that she not sleep separately.

What confuses her most is that he has always loved taking naps himself and usually gets to rest without interruption. Eventually, she became so fed up that she left the house with their child. Keep reading to see what happened after the couple finally discussed the strange change in his behavior.

not the actual photo

'My husband won’t let me nap'

I’m 20 weeks pregnant with a toddler and between all the different stuff she has going on (cheer, dance, mother’s day out etc.)

i’m typically chauffeuring her around, chasing her around, cleaning, cooking or picking up after my husband.

For some reason he can never let me nap! He’s weird about sleeping separate, so if i fall asleep on the couch he wakes me up to move to the...

Not for me, for him. I’ve told him before just to take our child and dog and leave me alone. I’m one of those that can’t fall asleep after being...

He does it if our child is at mother’s day out and he comes home for lunch and wants food made.

He’ll take our child “off my hands” for a bit but in my sleep i hear him make up different ways to get her to wake me up.

He also has been a BIG nap person since before we even had kids,

he always gets to nap and in the times i’m napping i’m not taking away any sleep time from him so I never thought of it being because of that.

I just don’t know what to do, if I don’t sleep enough i get physically ill. I actually had to leave the house today

I was so fed up with him not letting me sleep and now we’re(my child and I) back in the living room after he woke me up because he didn’t...

He’s been on his phone since he woke me up to move over there and is still currently on it. I never had this issue with him in my previous...

Update: I want to thank everyone for their advice and perspective. Up until this point we’ve never dealt with these issues,

He is typically very helpful and great with our first. This is a recent turn of events.

I am not being forced to be a SAHM as some of you pointed out, I love being home with my child and chose this.

Due to us moving frequently because of his job, I don’t trust anyone right off the bat to watch my child!

Heck our own parents haven’t stayed overnight with them yet.

A lot of comments were against my child being in so many activities so I thought I’d give some context if it mattered.

We previously lived in an area surrounded by neighbors with children similar in age to my child,

she attended swim and ballet on the days she didn’t have her early preschool program.

She had lots of friends and my husband was deployed back to back so it got us out of the house to do fun things.

We moved across the county, due to his job, and she had nothing. We live on a very busy through street right off of a major highway.

The neighbors are older and hardly have their grandkids around.

My child THRIVES on routine and consistency not to mention she wa just lonely. My husband works weekly and most weekends due to his new assignment.

She only had me so it was good for the both of us to have these activities.

Yes I have HG, and you wouldn’t believe it given this post but up until recently my husband

was taking my daughter to work before we got her enrolled in these programs because I was so sick.

Unprovoked he would wake her up to go with him. Mother’s Day out is 2 days out of the week from 9-3, that gives me a break to rest or...

tumble/cheer is a separate day from MDO for a little less than an hour.

Those two together are not as intense as you think, for majority of the class they’re practice balancing on toddler balance

beams literally the ones from target, then learning to clap on beat and play with pompoms.

It gives her a fun physical activity because we are more of a craft, pick flowers type of people at home!

Ballet is also a different day from MDO, T/C and is 45 min.

It’s an early class at about 10 which is great because after we meet with some of the moms and kids to goto the park and eat then let the...

I personally chose to put my child in these programs for her sake and my sanity.

As for my husband, We have spoke and I have pointed out what a lot of you said with out saying “hey look at what people on the internet told...

We are taking the next few lunch days of my daughter’s MDO days to speak about things and why he’s feeling the way

he’s feeling and taking it out on me. I appreciate everyone’s feed back and hope this is somewhat of peace for some of you.

Also, about the hearing things in my sleep lol…due to my husband having 2 back to back deployments that each has 5 week trainings,

I never really “napped” for safety reasons. Even if my child was in a safe environment my body would still listen out for them.

I guess a better word is i’m a light sleeper when it comes to naps so I can be alert if anything happens.

Good news i’ve have 2 five hour naps recently. uninterrupted.

Sometimes exhaustion is not a sign that someone is failing to cope. It is the body’s way of demanding recovery. The OP is 20 weeks pregnant, caring for a toddler, managing activities, cooking, cleaning, and handling much of the daily household load.

Against that background, being repeatedly awakened from naps would feel less like a minor annoyance and more like having one of the few available forms of recovery taken away. The fact that her husband regularly naps himself understandably makes the situation feel even more unfair.

The emotional issue is not simply sleep. It is whether her need for rest is being treated as legitimate. Her husband apparently wakes her because he wants lunch, prefers that she sleep beside him, or finds ways for their daughter to interrupt her. Even if none of this is intended maliciously, the effect is the same: his preferences repeatedly take priority over her physical limits.

There is a fresh perspective in the update, however. The OP says this is a recent change and that her husband was previously supportive, including taking their daughter with him when pregnancy sickness was particularly severe. That history matters.

Rather than automatically treating his new behavior as proof of a permanently uncaring relationship, it may be more useful to see it as a concerning shift that deserves explanation and correction.

Stress from work, another pregnancy, reduced family time, or changing expectations may help explain the shift, but explanation does not make sleep deprivation acceptable.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists states that fatigue is common during pregnancy and recommends getting plenty of rest, including taking daytime breaks when tired. ACOG notes that the body may need roughly eight to ten hours of sleep each night during pregnancy.

Research also suggests that sleep problems during pregnancy deserve serious attention rather than being dismissed as inconvenience.

A large systematic review covering more than 58 million pregnancies found associations between sleep disturbances and several adverse maternal and pregnancy outcomes, including gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, and preterm birth, although such findings show associations rather than proving that one causes the other.

That context makes the OP’s naps medically understandable rather than indulgent. Her husband does not need to personally experience her exhaustion to respect it. If she sleeps while their toddler is safely cared for, that rest is accomplishing something important.

The encouraging part of the update is that their conversation appears to have changed the pattern: two uninterrupted five-hour naps are a meaningful improvement. Going forward, protected rest periods may need to become an explicit household rule rather than something renegotiated every afternoon.

A supportive partnership does not require both people to be equally tired. It requires recognizing when one person needs recovery and refusing to make that need another task they have to defend.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors suspected the husband was avoiding childcare and acting selfishly

redve1vet68 − I could be wrong, but it sounds like your husband doesn’t want you to nap because then he has to watch your toddler.

NoveltyEducation − You don't have a husband, you have 2 children and a 3rd on the way.

SoCalN8tive − You are married to a self-centered man child who is treating you like he owns you, rather than a partner.

It’s super sad you’re having kids with this man child because I’m 100% certain if his inconsiderate behavior continues, you’re going to want to dump his a**.

These users viewed repeatedly disrupting a pregnant partner’s sleep as controlling or abusive behavior

Sweet_Error8038 − He’s being ridiculous.

Borderline abusive when you’re 20 weeks pregnant to continuously interrupt your sleep, especially if you’re comfortable on the couch.

I’m so sorry I can’t imagine how exhausted you are.

If you’ve already spoken to him about it maybe it’s time for some petty revenge, waking him up every time he’s napping may make him get the picture.

hellsanal666 − Not allowing someone to sleep is psychological abuse. This would be a relationship ending offense for me.

Careful_Trifle − Spray bottle. If he wakes you up, spray him in the face and crotch.

Tell him if he keeps waking you up while you're growing him a new child, you'll waterboard him as soon as he falls asleep.

Sleep is not something that anyone should mess with.

You should able to be secure enough in your own home to sleep without being interrupted constantly. This is a control issue.

aureousoryx − I mean, sleep depravation can be considered abusive in some circles because of the devastating effects it can have on a person’s psyche.

You need to lose your s__t with him.

These commenters urged her to confront him directly and demand a clear explanation

The_Actual_Sage − That's really bizarre and incredibly insensitive. You should be sleeping whenever you feel like you need to.

If this is affecting your well-being at all it's a serious issue.

Edit: I reread the post. You need to sit him down and have a serious talk about why he's so intent on always waking you up.

If he doesn't give you a clear answer you need to tell him in no uncertain terms that your f__king pregnant

and sometimes you need to rest. If he gives you a clear answer you can continue the conversation based off that.

Tha_Green_Kronic − If you haven't already, don't beat around the bush or try to be nice about it. "Listen motherf***er,

I NEED sleep" Be direct. If you have friends or family you can go to, threaten to go there just to get sleep.

Queefmi − Is this ragebait? You must be too nice. I would lose my s__t the first time and every time thereafter to shut it down.

Like actually I can’t control it.

I’m the most conscientious person but someone purposefully waking me up I’m gonna wail like a banshee in confusion at first

then just start crying then when I get my wits about me I will set them straight that it can never happen again.

Would you have treated the interrupted naps as an immediate red flag, or given the sudden behavior change room for a serious conversation first? And should every parent get protected, interruption-free rest time?
