Cashier Mocks Young Shopper for Using Her Lane, Then His Check Immediately Ends the Lecture

Self-checkout has changed the way many people shop, but using a regular cashier should not need an explanation. Sometimes there is a practical reason for choosing a staffed register, and making assumptions about someone based on their age can backfire in an unexpectedly satisfying way.

One Redditor learned that firsthand during a work errand at a quiet store one morning. With a cart full of break-room supplies, they joined the only open cashier line and immediately noticed the employee making pointed comments about younger shoppers creating extra work. Instead of arguing, the customer stayed quiet and let the criticism continue.

Then the cashier finally asked why they had not used the empty self-checkout stations. The answer changed her attitude almost instantly. Scroll down to see what happened next.

A cashier shames a young customer for avoiding self-checkout, only to learn a company check forced her into the line

'A Cashier tried to shame me for not using self checkout, until I told her why I was in her Line'

This story happened a few years back when I was working at my first job post college.

During my job my boss would have me do some side tasks where I would either pick up things for her or head to Hell Mart to pick up items...

Per usual, I had to go to HellMart and pick up some stuff for the break room and I had a pretty big list.

Mainly a lot of coffee cups, coffee ground/creamer, and other items.

Now my boss was pretty old school and she would still give me checks to write out when I was going to pay for something. Cool right?

I head to the store and pick up everything on the list. My cart is pretty full and and once I grab my things I head to the registers.

Normally I would look for one particular cashier because she had seen me so much at the store that we would have some small chatter during transactions.

She wasn't here today, so I just went to the first (and only) cashier I could see that was open and thankfully this cashier only had one person.

This is during the morning before 10 am, so the Store was pretty calm and quiet.

I head to the register and as I'm waiting for the lady in front of me to finish,

I slowly start putting my stuff up to get ready and I notice that the cashier is looking at me put the stuff up.

This cashier was a bit older, and I guess she seemed pretty annoyed by the amount of stuff I had in my basket

that she made a comment to the customer she was helping, saying "These young people today want to make life harder for us older folks"

I hear what she says, but I just smile and continue putting my stuff up.

She makes a few more comments to the person upfront but by this point I don't care anymore.

Finally it's my time and she starts ringing me up.

Already she is having an attitude with me, making comments about the amount of stuff

I have and how I could have been done faster at the self checkout since they were all empty.

I personally let her keep going and don't say a word to see how far she would go since it was a Monday morning,

and I honestly needed something to wake me up for the day.

She finally asks me "Tell me why you decided to go make me scan and bag all of these items when you could have been done with self checkout".

My excitement rises and I look at her with a gleeful smile and just say "I'm paying with a check, and they don't accept those at self checkout"

and instantly pull out the blank check ready for my total.

The way her face immediately went from a smug smile to an annoyed poker face was instantaneous.

She proceeded to just give a small "oh okay" and was completely silent the rest of the transaction.

Before she was eyeing me up and down judging me for looking young and not doing a transaction myself,

to just looking down at the items and not even saying a word.

At this point I just continue to look at her as I wait for my total to come up so I can get my check ready.

Finally my total is ready and it's over 100$, so of course she needs my ID to verify the transaction and whatnot.

This was where I became a little bit childish and jokingly told her "Checks are so annoying,

I wish they accepted them at self checkout so I wouldn't have to wait any longer", which she was not amused about.

Anyways the transaction ended and my interaction with her was done.

I left the store feeling amused by the interaction because I'd never heard of a cashier trying to put me down for using the regular line instead of self checkout...

I would've understood more if I had a ton of heavy items, but literally the most annoying thing in my cart was the 6 packs of coffee cups my boss...

There is something uniquely irritating about being criticized for making a perfectly reasonable choice, especially when the person criticizing you assumes they already understand your situation. A routine shopping trip can become surprisingly satisfying when one simple fact completely dismantles an unfair assumption.

The customer in this story was sent to a supermarket by her boss with a long shopping list and a company check to pay for the supplies.

She chose the only staffed register available, yet the cashier repeatedly commented on how much work the transaction created and questioned why she had not used self-checkout. Instead of immediately arguing, the customer waited until the cashier finally demanded an explanation.

Her answer that she was paying by check and self-checkout did not accept checks instantly changed the tone. The irony was almost perfect: the cashier had confidently criticized a decision without knowing the most basic fact behind it.

A different perspective is that the cashier may have been genuinely frustrated by the workload rather than deliberately trying to humiliate a younger customer. Retail workers often deal with repetitive transactions, staffing shortages, and customers who have different expectations about checkout.

She may have been attempting humor or venting about the amount of merchandise. That does not make the comments professional, but it makes the interaction less about age and more about an employee making an unnecessary assumption.

Social psychologist Lee Ross famously studied the fundamental attribution error, the tendency to explain another person’s behavior through their character while underestimating situational factors.

In everyday life, people can see someone making a particular choice and quickly assume laziness, incompetence, selfishness, or carelessness without knowing the circumstances that produced it. Situational information can dramatically change how the same behavior is interpreted.

That is essentially what happened at the checkout. The cashier saw a young customer with a full cart and apparently interpreted the decision to use a staffed register as making unnecessary work for someone else.

Once she learned about the check, the behavior suddenly made perfect sense. Nothing about the customer’s original decision had changed; only the cashier’s understanding of it had.

The customer’s final joke about wishing self-checkout accepted checks was admittedly a little childish. But after being repeatedly lectured about a choice she had a completely legitimate reason for making, the temptation to enjoy the reversal is understandable. She did not need to humiliate the cashier; the circumstances had already done most of the work.

The more useful lesson is for both sides. Customers cannot always see what pressures a cashier is dealing with, and employees cannot know what circumstances are behind a customer’s choices. A little curiosity or simply withholding judgment can prevent an ordinary transaction from becoming unnecessarily adversarial.

Sometimes the best comeback is not a clever insult. It is one small piece of information that makes the other person’s entire assumption collapse on its own.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These Redditors mocked the cashier for complaining about doing the job she was hired to do

Nezrite − What kind of d__fus would rather lose a job to automation than have a job and just *do it*?

Revo63 − I’m very different from you. I would have asked her right back “Why would you complain about a customer coming to your line?

This is literally your job, to ring up these items and bag them!

Why do you feel the need to give me s__t just because I come to your line like every other customer that you will see today?

I don’t owe you an explanation or reason, my being here is WHY YOU HAVE A JOB. If you want everybody to use the self-checkout you wouldn’t have this job!...

Hot-Bed-2544 − She complained about doing the job she was hired to do?

Short-Relation-7438 − My next stop would have been to the service desk and ask to talk with the manager.

"Why is your employee giving me grief about having to do her job? "

This group defended staffed checkouts as more practical for large shopping trips

EmmOx − As someone who cashiers, I would rather have people come through my line

because then I have someone to chit chat with and it keeps me busy rather than standing there and doing nothing

Severe_Atmosphere_44 − I typically use the cashier lanes when I have a lot of stuff.

Much faster. I hate when people with full carts use self checkout and hold up the majority who have just a few items.

Deltethnia − Also many self-checkouts don't allow full carts with a lot of items.

WVPrepper − she is having an attitude with me, making comments about the amount of stuff

I have and how I could have been done faster at the self checkout since they were all empty.

Our self-checkouts have no space to unload all that stuff before the register, and no room to stack it up after scanning.

If you try putting things back in the cart, it reminds you not to remove items from the "bagging area".

And we are limited to 15 items or less in self-checkout. What was her problem?

These commenters pointed out how self-checkout can create extra hassle instead of saving time

petiterunner − Recently I went to Ross and used regular checkout.

The cashier said snarkily, “Just so you know, we do have self checkouts if you care to ring up your items yourself. ”

But people have bad days, so whatever, let’s move forward. I went back the next day, and I went to self checkout.

After I scanned and paid, some type of loss prevention person at their station by the door said,

“Sorry, but I have to scan the items and receipt; we do this with everyone. ”

So they scanned everything again, just to check that I paid. What is the point of “self checkout” if we go through the process twice…

matrix8369 − On my way out I would have told the cashier

"Oh by the way, I'm a secret shopper and this interaction didnt go well" and let her think about that for the rest of the shift.

Was waiting until the end to reveal the check delightfully petty, or should he have explained himself immediately? More importantly, when both checkout options are available, why should any customer need to defend choosing the staffed one?
